That being said, I have to say that the show really was not bad. I loved -- LOVED -- that they spent some time in the beginning showing how huge INXS was -- and I shed a couple of quiet tears when they covered Michael's death and showed clips from his funeral. There really seemed to be an appreciation of the band by the contestants. And there were a number of things that I thought were handled pretty well. (Although there was one, personal, cringe-worthy point -- when the first singer came out and they said she was 22 yrs. old. That would mean she was born in 1983 -- the year I first heard INXS as an opening act for Adam Ant here in Milwaukee.) Talent wise? There are definitely some good prospects. One person absolutely blew me away; and that was Ty. Absolutely amazing!! I could totally picture him with the band! Not the entire audience is hired. PART of the audience is hired, part of the audience comes off the Rock Star website's ticket request page. The reason I know this is I was checking the casting lines once looking for a job and this show was on the line. They were looking for 'enthusiastic rock fans, 20-40 years old for a new reality show featuring a major rock band, hosted by another rock performer.' Audience members were cast on the basis of their photos in the casting agency's database, so yeah, they were going for a certain demographic. Confidentiality agreements were to be signed by those hired and perhaps by the non-paid audience too. By the way, paid audiences happen all the time in L.A. There's so much production here. A lot of game shows, talk shows, informercials, etc., use paid audience members to pad out the audience. "The Late Late Show," with Craig Ferguson, for one. If a talk show is a big hit, such as the case with "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," a paid audience is no longer necessary. My first post :) Has ANYONE looked at Marty and seen a 'blond' straight-haired Michael ?? It is really uncanny to me! Now, I've seen Michael upfront on several occasions and Marty's even got the laugh lines the same. Its only in certain positions with the micraphone, but all the same it's rather eerie when I watch him. All in all I like Marty and Jordis the best. Third place is Heather. I really dislike MIG. Ty is interesting but has too high of a voice. Brandon is OK and I can see him fit in with the band but I would much prefer Jon (the ex-lead; or Jordis or Marty) if Brandon was chosen. Yeah Brandon's older but so what! INXS is trying to make a comeback.. an older lead singer may not be their best move. I was immediately struck by how identical to the Real World it was in it's editing, with the quick cutaways of the local scenery, etc. I guess it seems to work, as all reality shows follow this pacing and formula. I just wish they could have figured out a way to make it less "standard" in that way. The whole "style" clinic was hokey. I mean, was it really necessary? Jordis nailed it on the head with her disdain for it. "Are we here to sing or play dress up?" I would say it's kind of embarassing except for the fact the band does have a history of style, to some degree. Just look at the various album covers and photo shoots, etc. I still don't know that it reflects well on the band to include it. I was hoping to see some performances, but that must be for Tuesdays. It was interesting to see the performers interact with the house band in rehearsals. I'm still a little stunned at it, myself, seeing them getting ANY coverage in the U.S. I mean, even before Hutchence died--practically ever since X and the X-Factor tour in 91--it's like the collective reaction to anything INXS among the U.S. public has been a collective shrug, and then go back to whatever else is "big" at that particular moment; grunge, boy bands, teen queens, etc. And saying people have even taken a long enough glance to even shrug is being generous. At least, that's been my personal experience in following the band. That's become so ingrained in my psyche that I'm half-expecting the show to be canceled, or the album to flop or the tour to play to half-empty arenas, or the singer walking out and getting a solo deal--although I'm assuming they've all already signed contracts to see the album and tour through, no matter who wins, in that case after the tour finishes up they're gone. I kept trying for about a half hour and figured, oh well, it's only week 2! LOL I must say I thought the performances in general improved in quality this week, which is what I expected... the performers would improve as they lost some of their "first show jitters." I didn't spend half the night cringing in pain at some of the singing, at least! What we enjoyed at my house: Marty, who did a great job but needs to loose the one hand pointing thing, and also next week he needs to sing something that isn't an alternative song (Franz Ferdinand, then the Killers...) Suzy, who did a lovely job making Roxanne her own, but who does not fit my image of INXS! Mig, who pulled that song off and improved his "broadway show" stage presence. Did you notice at the end he DID mess up the lyrics, but hid it real well??? Jordis, who I really like, but again I'm not sure as the lead singer of INXS. I think she could have done much better with that song. She seemed completely thrown by something... nerves or stage fright or something! Well, that's my two cents! Heidi D. I like suzie a lot, despite that she doesn't seem to be a popular choice. I think she has the best voice of all the females. she really has control...whereas some of the women come off a little too growly at times, suzie is very smooth and strong. ty...I know he's popular, but I just don't like this guy. he makes every song sound so broadway. he oversings everything and his stage persona is overly dramatic. neal really killed it last night, I think. they asked him to sing more melodic and he really didn't. when garry asked him if he thought he did, I don't think garry agreed with his answer. he sang it flat and missed a lot of notes. deanna had a tough song, and I don't think she pulled through as well as she could have. she lacks the confidence that INXS needs in a singer. brandon just doesn't fit the image at all to me. he's a souther rock boy and he's just doing his own thing without any regard to fitting the style of INXS. he did sweet home alabama really well, but how hard is it to sing that song? it seemed *too* natural for him. the others are somewhere in the middle to me. they all have potential, but I haven't seen anything to really take notice of, in my opinion. my pick for the bottom three: deanna neal ty From: inxslist@yahoogroups.com [mailto:inxslist@yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of stazya@rcn.com Sent: Wednesday, July 20, 2005 2:19 PM To: inxslist@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [inxslist] Tuesday 19th performances Personally, they have to get rid of the people who don't have their own ID's - namely Neal "Mick Jagger" and Marty "Beck" - and I don't like Mig at all. The other names all blend together for me so forgive me when i go by songs, but the girl who did People Are Strange - she did the same moves for her first song AND last night. My hubby says she looks like a crane hunting fish in the water. The California Dreamin' guy creeps me out. Yes, great mix of the song, but there's something about him that makes me think he's missing the passenger seat in his car AKA Ted Bundy. I like Heather - she's versatile, funky and very sure of herself. Same with Jordis. The only guy I like is Brandon - mostly because I think he does fit with the guys, not too young, not too old, good voice and with a makeover, he could be hot. But he lost points with me by putting his mic sooo far forward last night. The guys keep telling them this is a BAND - not a lead singer with back up. These people better get that through their heads fast. If Ty could mix it up a bit, maybe, but all I see is a Tony award for him. He can't seem to shake his musical theater background. Second, I'm not getting the song choices that they are being given...Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd. And third, I know that they are doing a new album, new songs, but if they are going on tour after this I'm sure they're going to be singing their older INXS stuff as well. I would like to hear the contestants sing INXS songs now, not when they're in the bottom three. Wouldn't it be awful if it came down to the last two people and they couldn't do justice to an INXS song? That would be scary! So, with that said, if these are the people I have to go with, here's my take on the performances. So far I can't see ANY of the females fronting INXS. I feel Jordis and Heather have the best voices and stage presence of them all, but still can't see them with the band. Of the male singers, I agree with stayz about "Mick Jagger" and "Beck" (too funny!), Ty...nope, Marty scares me. Mig I think did a great job of remembering all the lyrics (and yes, I caught the mistake at the end too), but the song didn't really showcase his voice. I like Brandon, although he needs a MAJOR makeover, but my favorite so far is JD. Last week I thought he was the best of the male singers, but this week he dropped down considerably. He seemed to be just a step slow in keeping pace with the beat of both his songs and couldn't stretch his range the way he needed to. I keep wanting to like Ty, and I kind of do, but he needs to lose his so-called Broadway persona and be less polished. Every time he busts a move I keep thinking of Madonna's Vogue video and her "Strike a pose!" line. Still, I keep pulling for him because I think he's the one who genuinely wants to be in "INXS" as opposed to just winning the contest. J.D. is definitely out to win the contest, but I like his determination and focus, and creativity in re-arranging the songs. Gary remarked that it was the performances the band will be judging on as opposed to his cheapshot at the other contestants regarding their supposed lack of familiarity with INXS' songs...but I think that should be a red light as to his attitude. Is this a guy they can trust? On to the women...Suzie has vastly improved. All the other women have held steady. Jessica needs to rely less on her body with her skimpy outfits--not that I'm complaining TOO much, lol--and focus more on her performance, which is already admittedly solid, but most of the women sound too similar. To me the runaway leader is Jordis. When I watch the others I'm very judgemental of their performances and nitpick at what they do to some degree, but when she's on I'm just enthralled. She's got that extra "something" the others lack (so far). She's magnetic. When I see Heather's performances I'm impressed, but I find myself comparing her to Jordis and have trouble picturing her fronting INXS. Watching Jordis there's nobody else I'm even considering. She's a cut above everybody else. Inevitably the shows producers (including INXS) will keep him around well into the duration. "Like sands through the hour glass.........and so are..." LOL. Anyway regardless of his fandom for INXS the guy seems to be able to belt out a tune alright. However he's not the only one. I have found a few faults with the shows concept and some other positive points which were unexpected. Is it true the shows ratings in the elimination round are heavily decreased? Cause that's when the INXS tunes are performed and somewhat poorly at that in my eyes. Although the houseband does an amicable job on the show, the INXS songs are missing something (the harp on Suicide Blonde literally killed itself), and the performances of the contestants of INXS songs at this stage for the most part are just simply pathetic. This ain't a great advertisement for INXS, and the silly concept lends itself to hearing all the non winners singing more INXS songs than the potential winner, who could conceivably only have to face that welcome challenge when only 3 contestants remain. For instance Tara has already sung two INXS songs and I have little doubt she will be nominated again next week, yet I am convinced that she will not win (INXS would be fools to choose someone who is not popular with the general public). Unless they drop the viewer voting. I think they should mix the INXS songs in with the regular batch, maybe one or two per round, to see how the singers decide who gets to sing it. Surely they'd all covet that song to really showcase themselves for the band. As Dave Navarro said, they're auditioning for INXS, not just any band. I'd love to hear Jordis sing Never Tear Us Apart. Of course her take on the other INXS tunes would be more interesting, I'm sure the band has some idea of her (and all the other contestants) capabilities as they must rehearse with the houseband on a fairly scheduled basis (It is highly conceivable that INXS already have most of the eliminations worked out it is only when it will occur). It would be nice if we could see it, and as contestants disappear, watching these people work with the house band will occur like cotton candy, JD has already impressed me (I am myself a musician) with his capabilities in directing the houseband where he needed them to go. The script required him to be one of the main players :). Mixing the INXS songs in one way or another with other tunes would be a good idea, alot of people watch just to see universally popular songs performed by wannabes. I don't really care who wins as long as they are competent, the studio outcomes will be far more interesting than the live tour to me. Apparently the songs are already written (in process) for this album, so the band has a fair idea what they need. It doesn't sound like it, considering the band are apparently already laying down the music for the new album as the show progresses. Does the band think getting a starstruck newby mean they're getting somebody who's amenable to their direction? Or will the winner get to the point Jon Stevens was at, disillusioned, bored and frustrated with the band's lack of progress? Who wants to be a karaoke singer their entire career if they can have solo success with their own songs? As head and shoulders above the rest as I believe Jordis is talent-wise, I think she's too talented to settle for being a karaoke singer. If it came down to her and Ty, for example, I wouldn't be surprised if the band went with Ty by virtue of him being more of a team player who will follow the band's lead. I think Jordis would quickly get tired of the arrangement, especially if, as I believe, she'll have agents and record labels trying to lure her away as soon as the contractual one album and tour finishes. We've seen the likes of Terence Trent D'arby, Suzie Damarchi and Jon Stevens not pan out. These were all established singers with their own careers, exactly the type I felt the band should court...but maybe that was the problem; having their own careers to stand on they didn't need to take marching orders from the band. Did you read the Jon Stevens interviews I found via his website last week? I was a little surprised there was nobody commenting on what he had to say, particularly regarding Andrew. JS definitely sounded somewhat fed up with the band "floggin" Michael Hutchence as well, as he put it. For myself, I can definitely empathize with Jon Stevens. It was clear from the beginning he wanted to make his collaboration with INXS into something special, something that would revitalize both parties careers and to make the band relevant and popular again. Not being Australian I'm not familiar with who's "big" down there right now, but given Stevens' previous career in Noiseworks he had his own legacy to bring to the table and I can't imagine anyone else of stature who could come in to the group. But for whatever reason the rest of the group was reluctant to take that step forward. Best of album followed best of album followed remix album, etc. From his comments you can tell he felt a great opportunity got away for both he and INXS because they couldn't move on. My bottom three among those I saw would HAVE to be JD, Daphna and probably Tara (sorry dear) or MAYBE Heather. Ty impressed me, even though he seemed shaky during the first verse, but he did what the band and I think the rest of us have been saying he needed to do, rein in his Broadway thing. Marty impressed me, too, but I agreed with Dave Navarro that it wasn't his strongest performance vocally. J.D. totally blew it with his performance, and that malarky with his sister was such a load of BS. I didn't buy that for a second! And neither did anyone else, I think. I think it's time for him to go, actually. He's too conniving. (Ahhhh...but that is what the audience wants, now isn't it?) I'll start the ball rolling on this one. Two people cut? One one hand, wow. On the other hand, I feel disappointed with myself for being wowed by such a cheap trick. I do feel like these first few weeks have been painful having to endure performances from people that obviously aren't going to win. I know I would be happier if we could fast forward to when we are down to the four or six people who really have a shot at sussing this gig. It wouldn't bother me if they made a few more double cuts. Does this mean at some point we get an extra show with nobody cut or was there an extra show in the schedule to begin with? I never liked Daphna, so I'm grateful I don't have to watch Dave fawn over her any more. For some reason, I had expected Heather to be around much longer. I hate to think that she got cut early simply because she was sick - after all, Suzie got a second chance for a much worse offense. Still, whats done is done. It was nice to see INXS play. I thought the performances seemed much more alive than previous Wednesdays. (I don't mean to dis the house band though - they are great.) More generally speaking, I think the format of the show needs some work. Monday shows seem very rushed. Its hard to cram a weeks worth of events into 24 minutes. I wonder why CBS didn't give them an hour show on that night like all of their other reality shows. Conversly, Wednesday's shows are just too drawn out. There is a lot of pausing added and it feels like fake drama. I'm not sure what I would do to tighten it up though. I honestly thought Jessica had a good performance of "Because the Night" Tues and didn't expect her to appear again in the Elimination round, but of the performers Wed night hers was the best. I thought Daphna was just flat on WYN, but I was convinced Heather saved herself on By My Side. I've gone over to the MSN message boards to read comments and it's like stepping into a high school cafeteria with all the juvenile comments, lol. (One even said an INXS member was so broke he was selling tours of his mansion before the show!) The general feeling there, however, is that JD supposedly has countless girls going nuts over him and vote for him again and again. I hate the conspiracy theory angle but I wonder just how "legit" the voting is. I've noticed the CBS website for the show no longer lists the voting results. Something that was mentioned this week that hasn't before is that Rockstar is doing much better in the target demographic (18-45 year olds) than in the overall ratings. Since this is the viewing audience that most advertisers pay attention to, it bodes well (but not necessarily great) for the show. For some reason, the show did not get mentioned in the Zap2it report for Wednesday night although the next to last paragraph infers that it came last place for its time slot and could not have done better than a 2.9 rating. (Based on past performance, I would guess that it pulled between a 2 and 2.5 share, but this is speculative; I have been unable to find a secondary news source for daily rating summaries.) Information from other places I've looked shows that the Saturday reruns were pulling about 2 million viewers, but I don't see it listed on the TV schedule for this or next weekend, so I am assuming that CBS has dropped the repeat from their weekend lineup. I wasn't thrilled with Daphna either. I thought, as soon as Heather's name was called, that she looked like she had given up. And she kind of confirmed when she sang By My Side. I think it was Tim that made that comment to her too. It would be cool if they had a leftover show maybe for the winner and the band to put on a little "mini" concert. What we can expect in the future. That would be cool. As far as the show format. I think they should have the performance show first (Monday), the elimination show next (Tuesday) and finally the "clinic" show (Wednesday). It would seem more in sequence that way. It's like we have to wait a whole week to see the rest of the performers reactions to the night before and do they really only get one day to rehearse their performance song? Being called out like that has to be a serious blow to the ego, which for any performer is critical. And then to immediately "pick up your game" and perform a song I think is a tenuous prospect at best. Sure, I know the argument that they need to perform under pressure, but I just don't think it's the right pressure. I think all three of them botched the lyrics to their songs at some point, or that might just be the shortened versions clipping certain verses out; it was hard to tell.
