I have to say that's one of the worst mixes I've ever heard! All they did was take the version of taste it on all juiced up and put it in the background of a garbage remix. in a sense, it's not really much of a mix if all they're doing is stealing someone else's mixes and putting them together. worst of all, the tempos are COMPLETELY OFF! I had a conversation years ago with someone on the list (who's longer onlist, I'm sad to say) about this song, and we both thought (and I still think) that this song sort of led to the downfall of INXS. Before it (and esp. the video) broke, INXS were just another band trying their best to "make it." Sure, they had success and weren't starving by any means, but they still were waiting for that ultimate hit. As we all know, NYT did that for them, but, I think, also led to Michael's being catapulted into the whole "sex symbol" arena, and thus led ot a gradual diminution of his status as a Serious Artist. No longer was INXS regarded as a band of 6 equal members, but as Michael's band - how many times have we all heard something to the effect of "Michael Hutchence and INXS," as if he's the main draw, with the guys as his backing band? I know that Michael constantly battled against this (by refusing solo magazine covers, for example), but he never really was able to shake that baggage that went along with the success of NYT. I wonder if he'd had a shirt on in the video if things would have turned out differently? lol Anyhow, I'm just rambling on here, but my point is, I think that NYT, and esp its accompanying video was really the sad beginning of the end for the band. It just seems like no one ever took them as seriously as artists after that point. Any thoughts? My opinion only. Cathy From: "Mark Morris" Sent: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 15:10:59 +1100 To: Subject: Re: INXS: NYT OK, i agree with what Nanci is trying to point out here. I think what she is trying to say here is that INXS had a lot more respect and admiration among the music industry until the commercial Need You Tonight video was released. What she is saying is that INXS were seen as a creative and influential band but after NYT were seen more as an 80s kinda boy band with a sexy lead singer. The punters didn't want the INXS music, they wanted the INXS lead singer. Of course in saying that without the music they wouldn't have been able to have the videos. But what i believe was really the beginning of the end for INXS was 3 years between Kick and X. I think by the time X came out their audience had forgotten about them, the INXS posters hanging on teenagers walls across the USA had been replaced with posters of other newer younger bands, People had forgotten about Kick and inxs. Newer younger bands with sexy lead singers had come along and when X did finally come out, people simply were over INXS as a commercial success. mark From: SHOWBIZKID@webtv.net Sent: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 01:43:55 -0500 (EST) To: inxs@topica.com Subject: Re: INXS: NYT Greetings Friends, Not to sound like a messenger frrom outer space, altough after the past week I feel like one,I have to agree with both Nanci & Mark,it is pretty darn hard to isolate an individual song as my least favourite,I have been put through this same ordeal as a Beatles fan and found it amazing how one song can be Ugghh to someone and realize it is a Gem to another, this is a great topic of conversation, as someone said it would be terrific to find an ugly song by the Band but I don't think there is any song that stands out as least favourite, in my opinion, although some remain stronger than others, also we would like to extend our congrats to all of you who have been members of this group for so long,I have been around for 4-5 years (uncertain) and have met some really wonderful people over that time period,Like I told my wife this is a family not of blood but of common interest.Let's Go INXS,hit every venue that is possible when you get to the States, and please make sure PA & NJ are included, till then Take Care & God Bless!! Peace & Love, Bonnie & Joe P.S. I dislike Questions and can't get into Men and Women at all. Please (You got that) is not good anymore but i lovd it a lot when it first came out, bought import copy of GH for Deliver Me before it was released in Aust, Why i don't know. What You Need is another one thats not really a fave, love it when it comes on the radio, and love it live but not a song i'd put on just for a listen. Loved Everything when i heard it, but now find it incredibly boring. Didn't like Viking Juice but now really do. mark From: "IN2XSive" Sent: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 21:58:07 +1100 To: Subject: Re: By the way questions has always been a personal fav from WTWYA as well as strange desire, and especially the orignal recording of it that features as a b-side Troy From: "Deirdre Jennette" Sent: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 20:07:20 To: inxs@topica.com Subject: RE: INXS: Strange Topic OMG I TOTALLY forgot about "Men & Women" LOL! I've been a little behind on my emails lately but I thought I would put my 2 cents in about "don't change." The face to face version is on their cover album called Standards and Practices. It's excellent, I highly recommend it! I've been a big fan of face to face for years, and when I came across this album that had cover songs by all my favorites--the pixies, the ramones, jawbreaker, the smiths AND to top that: INXS----I almost lost it in the store!!!!! I'm on Morpheus quite often, and I've seen many people with "don't change", so if you don't want to go out to buy the cd, I would recommend going there to download the song!! take care, kim --- Davy Jones wrote: > ----- Original Message ----- > > Does anyone have this MP3? The portrait is now in the National Portrait Gallery of Australia in Australia. There was also a pic of Hutch's pal Nick Cave who is gonna be playing in NYC, if anyone cares. love and peace to all... love, marlo! From: "Jenny Green" Sent: Mon, 25 Feb 2002 17:12:45 +1030 To: Subject: Re: INXS: NYT I agree with you Cathy. Inxs had a plan very early in their career to 'conquer the world' and the only way to do this was to release material that would appeal to the widest possible audience. 'Kick' had that appeal. Many Australians believe that Inxs 'sold out' with that album - I totally disagree with this. Its songs have stood the test of time. Also, Inxs are in the entertainment industry, and the NYT video was very entertaining! Michael was a very sexy man, as anybody who has seen Inxs live will testify, for that aspect of his persona not to be captured in a video, particularly in light of his tragic death, would have been a terrible shame. The first thing that attracted me to Inxs was its great music - what kept me attracted to them was the total package: great music, entertaining videos, fantastic live performances, and a world-class charismatic lead singer! Glad I woke you all up a little :-) Seeing how I started all this debate off, I at least must put my own contributions forward:- Songs I really dislike are Deliver Me, Men & Women, Tiny Daggers, Send A Message, and Heaven Sent each seeming to strike the wrong chord with me. However I have to say that my all time disliked track has to be Full Moon Over Dirty Hearts (with C.Hynde). God, that song is so dull and not INXS. I must say though, that for an album so critised and not bought in great numbers there seems to be little in the way of disliked FMODH tracks included by you all. I noted points raised about INXS getting too big following NYT, lets be fair, it sooned levelled out to a realistic level when X came out and the fan base has remained almost at that level right to today IMHO. The Kick album is no different to any other bands biggest album, it's what they become remembered for, unfortunately X wasn't the best follow up and although good, not as great as they were capable of, and momentum was lost. WTWYA is the ultimate INXS album, because of it diversity and nothing-else-like-it-out-thereness. Anyway, I have another topic if you're interested :- Name you least favourite INXS promo-video. Here's mine - Melting In The Sun. Cheap, nasty and plain old lazy. Great, great song ruined commercially by lack of video interest. Just remember what videos were around when this came out and ask yourself why this song failed.
