As the youngest of 11 children growing up in New Zealand, he was proud to pay his board, but not in circumstances he would have chosen. Stevens got his first job after following two rules that have served him well ever since - he stood up for himself and he followed his instincts. It got him expelled from school. "I got into trouble in class, I don't even remember why," Stevens recalls. He objected to the severity of his punishment, six straps, and found himself outside the classroom for good. Later, he asked his mum to break the news to his dad, and went out to get a job, assembling drive shafts at the Repco factory in Wellington, New Zealand. "It was easy to get jobs in those days. You just walked into a place and said, 'Have you got a job?' and they said, 'When can you start?'" Stevens, now 40, remembers. "Once I walked into a construction site to ask for work and they said, 'One of the guys fell down a stairwell. We're off to his funeral. If you want, you can start Monday.'" He did. Although his family always sang at home, it hadn't occurred to Stevens that he could make a living from the music he loved. Then he joined the EMI record factory in 1977. To a music-loving 16-year-old, it was a great job. "You got bonuses. You'd press 800 to 1,000 albums per day on your press. There was Elvis, Led Zeppelin. The Eagles' Hotel California was a big one." Jon Stevens remembers the EMI work as hot and steamy. "At one point I was pressing my own brother's record. [Singer/actor Frank Stevens performed internationally.] And at one time there were eight of my family working there." A friend entered Stevens and his sisters in a talent contest. They won, and his career was launched. By 17 he had two No 1 hits in New Zealand. The singer - who performed at the Sydney Olympics, played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, fronted Noiseworks (the band he co-founded) and now sings with INXS - remembers his year at EMI as "a really great time of life, full of exuberance and optimism, happy-go-lucky". His rural Upper Hutt childhood inspires nostalgia, too. His father was a Scottish merchant seaman who fought in two wars then jumped ship to marry Jon's mother, who came from a Maori family of 17. It was his dad who "taught us to stand up for ourselves". As a father, Stevens, now an Australian citizen, hopes he and wife Tracy, a photographer, will equip their children, Millie, 10, and Levi, 8, "with the necessary skills to be sensible" in life. "It's a different world now, but I believe anybody can do anything if they believe in themselves. Kids will experiment. You can only be there for them when they need you and hope they are going to know when to say no. People I grew up with went off the rails and it could have happened to me. Fate intervened and music got me out." Stevens lasted a year in the EMI job. "There was a Muhammad Ali fight. It was a big deal. They were showing it on TV... We only had two channels! The boss said anyone who takes a day off will be fired. Me and my brother decided we would take the day off and we got fired." His work ethic has clearly changed. "I don't expect things to happen," he says. "You make things happen. The beauty is I love my work. I think that's a rarity." Caren Weiner Campbell 11/23/2001 Entertainment Weekly Time Inc. 88 (Copyright 2001) It was a dramatic death, even by rock star standards. On Nov. 22, 1997, Michael Hutchence, frontman for the Australian band INXS, was found in his suite at Sydney's Ritz-Carlton hotel, his nude body suspended from a door hinge by a leather belt around his neck. Blood tests revealed the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and prescription drugs. There was no note. The death, suspected by some to have been an autoerotic mishap, was ruled a suicide, but no one in Hutchence's circle could believe it. The night before, Hutchence had enjoyed an Indian dinner with his father and stepmother--"he was just in such great form, laughing, joking," recalled his dad, Kelland. Hutchence, 37, told friends he was excited about INXS' upcoming Lose Your Head tour. Performing, he once said, was "one of the best feelings on the market." Hutchence had enjoyed that feeling since 1977, when he and high school friend Andrew Farriss formed INXS. A Sydney native, Hutchence possessed a telegenic charisma that helped make the band an MTV fixture. INXS' sixth album, 1987's Kick, was a 10-million-copy smash, and vaulted them to international hot-ticket status. By 1997, however, INXS' newest release, Elegantly Wasted, had been a critical and popular bust. And though he gave up the playboy life-- he planned to marry British TV personality Paula Yates, ex-wife of Live Aid founder Bob Geldof and mother of Hutchence's baby daughter, Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily--his new relationship came with some heavy burdens. Hutchence had been struggling to help his fiancee gain custody of Yates and Geldof's three daughters: Fifi Trixibelle, now 18; Peaches, 12; and Pixie, 11. Indeed, on the day of his death, Hutchence is said to have wrangled with Geldof over whether the kids could visit. "Michael's last words to Paula were 'I love you. I'm gonna ring Bob now and just beg him...to let the children come,'" one of Yates' friends told PEOPLE magazine. Whatever was said in that phone call apparently prompted Yates to blame Geldof: "That bastard killed Michael," she reportedly screamed. Yates' agony would soon come to a sad end: Last September, she died of a heroin overdose. Tiger Lily, now 5, currently lives in London with Geldof. Earlier this year, Hutchence's mother, Patricia Glassop, and half- sister Tina again blamed his death on drugs and despair in their memoir, Just a Man: The Real Michael Hutchence. But no one will ever really be sure why Hutchence surrendered to the devils inside. "He was the most unlikely guy to do anything like that," says dad Kelland. "You look at it every which way and you can't get any answers." I obviously can't speak for INXS, but I can tell you what U2 said in response to this very question. They pointed out that in the US, CDs sell for $13 or 14, which is pretty cheap. Abroad, however, they go for much more, more in the neighborhood of $20 or so. So, U2 puts extra tracks on non-US versions as a bonus gift to the fans who have to shell out more for the CD. There was an article about this in Goldmine a few months ago with the same premise but an alterior motive. Because CDs are about 35% cheaper in the U.S., they can actually be imported into foreign countries and sold for less money than the same CD that is manufactured locally. Usually the labels put the extra tracks on the record to encourage people to buy the domestic release rather than the foriegn (i.e. the U.S.) release. No apologies need be made. I too am a faithful devotee to the fab four. I have good memories of going away with my family in the car on holidays whilst my dad put on his Beatles tapes. That sparked my interest in music and I believe if my father didn't introduced me to the Beatles, I wouldn't haven't listened to INXS years later.
