They were very touching, actually. Jenny Morris did a wonderful job of introducing them and when she was finished I don't know that there was a dry eye in the house. They basically thanked their family, friends, fans, Chris Murphy, Richard Lowenstein, a huge number of others and Andrew spoke of Michael as well. It was wonderful to see them receive this award but at the same time, really made you realise how much Michael is missing. Very bittersweet. Watching INXS being inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame on TV was without a doubt the highlight of the ARIAs for me. I got a bit misty-eyed watching the montage with the history of the band and the scenes with remembering Michael. It was great to see the band together again and finally getting the recognition they deserve. Besides that wonderful moment, word is out there that this was the worst ARIAs ever. Sorry if I offend anyone out there, but I'd tend agree. Listening to David Campbell's lame jokes made me want to change the channel within the first 5 minutes. You'd hear the familiar lispy whisper every year or so. The soft Australian accent and always those words. You would run into Michael Hutchence in the unlikeliest of places. A Chinese in London; a Monte Carlo casino; a dive bar in Leeds; a fishing village in Hong Kong. He'd slide up beside you, smelling of pheromones and cologne, snake his arm around your waist and giggle quietly to himself. "How ya bin, mate?" I first heard this slip of a greeting in 1987. Hutchence's band, INXS, were still something of a laughing stock in Britain. They wanted to be the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, the Doors and Talking Heads and ended up sounding like A Flock of Seagulls on a high-protein diet. But they'd done a great single and the singer looked like an intriguing type: all tousled hair, troubled soul and leather trousers. We arranged to meet in the Windows bar at the London Hilton. Such was his louche and lovely way, Hutchence already had the staff mixing him a bionic version of the vodka and cranberry Cape Codder. "A couple of these for lunch and you feel like God," he laughed, draining his first. "I think we're going to have a very pleasant afternoon." And we did. Hutchence proved himself to be infinitely more sophisticated than the Jim Morrison wannabe the media wanted him to be. He was worldly, having grown up in Australia, Asia and America. He knew about commerce - his father was an international businessman - and spoke knowledgeably about Oriental trade routes. He was as at ease with minor royalty as he was with tin miners in Perth. After several drinks he coyly revealed a fondness for cookery and collecting fabrics. That said, he didn't disappoint in the Lizard King stakes: he displayed a keen interest in French symbolist poetry and had a detailed first-hand knowledge of all matters pharmaceutical. As the sun started to set, Hutchence stood up. He was sorry, he said, but INXS had a gig that night. "Got to go and be a sexy-but- sensitive rock star," he sighed. When I saw him later that evening, his shirt was being torn from his back. He was laughing his head off, loving every minute of it. Another thing he loved was getting out of it. He drank and took drugs in that robustly Australian way: never take a half when half a dozen are available. He made no secret of the fact that he had dabbled with all the major inebriants. He reminisced fondly about the smack scene in Sydney and, at the dawn of the Nineties, threw himself wholeheartedly into acid house culture and, more specifically, ecstasy. "I was into acid house heavily for a couple of years," he told me excitedly. "It was wonderful, then I stopped. I was rolling around on the floor with 14-year-olds thinking, mmm, maybe I shouldn't be doing this. Not that I was being moral, I just moved on. It was a part of my life and ... God, I had a great time though ... " It was then that Hutchence began seeing Kylie Minogue. On paper it seemed unworkable, but the friendship that evolved between two of Australia's most prominent exports was a joy to behold. Even the tough Aussie committee that comprised INXS, though initially sceptical, were smitten by the lovebirds. "It's actually a very beautiful thing," said guitarist Tim Farriss in a rare outburst of emotion, before adding, "Kylie's a lovely girl and Michael really loves her. So if you were thinking of writing anything smartarse about them, prepare to have your legs broken slowly and painfully." Hutchence, it was widely believed, was hell-bent on corrupting Kylie, although he insisted that she was often the one doing the corrupting. "Listen," he'd chuckle. "Whose bag did they find the handcuffs in at the airport? Mine or hers?" Kylie loved Hutchence, but impossible work schedules drew the relationship to a reluctant close, although both parties vowed to remain the best of friends. A year later, and we're in Monte Carlo for some spurious music awards. Hutchence arrives with his new supermodel girlfriend, Helena Christensen, and checks them both into the Hotel de Paris. He is dressed way down in battered Levi's, a stained cheesecloth top and some ancient motorcycle boots. We nip out for a drink while Helena freshens up in their suite. Once behind a beer, Hutchence talks candidly about the latest love of his life. They're living together at his rambling house, Venus, outside Nice, and have been since the moment they met. "She's great," he says. Amazing skin. Unbelievable eyes. A big fan, he adds, of Depeche Mode and The Smiths. This last turns out to be a subject that Helena can discuss for hours. "Don't do it, mate," warns Hutchence. "Life's too short." At the awards ceremony, Hutchence, with Helena in tow, presents a particularly pointless gong, then we head out to Jimmy'z, the principality's premiere discotheque. It is uniquely, hysterically awful. Bad Euro house music pulses at tepid volume, Lacroix'd debs smooch with leathery octogenarian shipping magnates, be-blazered halfwits moan about mooring costs, fountains spurt into silvery pools at the feet of the obscenely wealthy clientele. It puts you in mind of one of Hutchence's own lyrics: "Makes you wonder how the other half die." "Don't you just love it?" cackles the singer as we cross the dancefloor. "It's just totally fucking great." Whenever Hutchence says "great", it comes out italicised. In 1993, I had been sent to interview Hutchence in America. After a blistering show in a Boston bar, Hutchence was celebrating in his hotel room. He was under the influence of several agents of stupefaction. He allowed his cigarette to fall from his mouth four times in two hours and managed to knock both our drinks over twice. It was during this interview that Hutchence famously proclaimed himself to be "a fucking great rock star". Those italics again. This had come out of a conversation concerned with how the feline front man felt he was perceived. "I think people see me two different ways," he said, stumbling around the room, wrenching open cupboards in a furious search for the minibar. "Something between, `He's a sexy little guy pushing his tush around' and, `Mm, maybe we should have a second look at this bloke.' I've never really been taken seriously by the right kind of people, and I think I should be ..." In order to avoid drunken despondency setting in, I introduced the notion of him being an entertainer. "I hate that word," he spat. "I might be entertaining but I'll never be an entertainer. Please. If you said, `Michael, I've got a hundred people here I'd like you to entertain', I'd be hiding in the cupboard ... I've never been able to find a public persona that works. When I walk into a room, sometimes I can do it. Sometimes I can do it really well and I'm a great rock star. At other times, I'm just like wallpaper. "I don't know why it's like that." Then he came right out and said it. "I really am a fucking great rock star," he crowed, although you could tell he was serious. "The others are pretenders. They have choreographers and people to do their hair, managers who tell them what to wear. I've never fucking done that. Ever." The night ended on a light-hearted note but with an eerie observation. "Like Sting, I do yoga," he said, his tongue pressed lightly in his cheek. "I'm learning to fuck for five hours at a time. Five hours is just foreplay for me. It's virtually premature ejaculation, mate!" We laughed, then, after re-charging his glass, he said, "These days everyone wants their rock stars to jog. It used to be that, as a rock star, everyone was happy if you killed yourself." Another year on and, after an incendiary INXS concert in Brixton, I look into Hutchence's dressing room to congratulate him. There are a couple of people already in there who have had the same idea. One of them is Paula Yates. Without wishing to sound like a celebrity stalker or an oleaginous showbiz columnist, Paula Yates and Bob Geldof were old friends of mine. Friends to the extent that I had already discussed Hutchence with Yates at length and was well aware that she had a schoolgirl crush on him - although Yates had a schoolgirl crush on almost everyone. In besotted teenage style, there was a picture of a smoulderingly dishevelled Hutchence stuck to her fridge door. Scrawled across Hutchence's forehead, in what looked suspiciously like Geldof's handwriting, was the word "twat". So there was a frisson of attraction between her and Hutchence - they had met, enjoyably, a few times previously - but Yates' infatuation was regarded as little more than a joke. Geldof did not regard Hutchence as a threat to his marriage or his career; in fact, the two men had always displayed a real, albeit reserved in Geldof's case, admiration for each other. What Hutchence and Yates shared was that they were both Olympian flirts. Yates could flirt with a door - she would often unbutton your shirt as she spoke to you - and Hutchence had this curious hold over women. The strongest female would reduce down to simpering girlish slush after five minutes in his company. I once introduced a friend, an intelligent, attractive and highly creative ceramicist, to Hutchence. He asked her what she would like to drink and, to her horror and eternal shame, she blurted, as if in the taloned grip of Satan himself, "Spunk". Even Hutchence blushed, but recovered sufficiently to say, "But wouldn't you like a glass of wine first?" And here was Paula in Michael's dressing room, both of them in their flirtatious, coquettish element. Around midnight, INXS and entourage repaired to the Conrad Hotel in Chelsea Harbour for late- night libation and, over the course of a few hours, the relationship intensified. It was in the bar of the Conrad that Hutchence and Yates both, privately, expressed a keen desire to sleep with the other and, as the evening progressed, that outcome seemed increasingly likely. A month later, and Oasis are concluding their first major British tour with a gig at London's Hammersmith Palais. During one of the longer solos, I wander upstairs only to find Paula Yates fast asleep on a sofa with a house brick of a mobile phone resting against her head. I sat beside her and, in doing so, woke her up. We spoke about a press-concocted affair between her and Liam Gallagher. "He's just a big baby," Yates smiled. "I prefer real men." Where was Bob? I asked, assuming she was referring to him. "On tour," she shrugged. "Who cares?" So who was she expecting such an urgent call from? "Michael," she said. Whenever couples split up, friends are left either side of the dividing line. For better or worse, I wound up with Geldof. I have never seen, and hope never to see again, a man so devastated by heartbreak. Overnight, his wife had changed from adoring mother and devoted partner to die-hard debauchee and reckless rock chick. Such was the force of this personality switch, Hutchence just seemed to get sucked along in the slipstream. He had fallen in love with Paula's charisma, brilliance and astounding psychic energy but, in reality, he didn't have a clue what he'd let himself in for. Suddenly he was no longer the complex artist, the strutting peacock, the great rock star he had always claimed to be. He was out of his depth, trying to cope with a woman in the throes of a profound personality crisis while attempting to befriend and be accepted by the three children that Yates had brought with her. For a time, Hutchence sought solace in oblivion. Opiates, tranquillisers, alcohol. Any form of anaesthetic. In her own confusion, Yates - a life- long teetotaller and drug refusenik - joined him. The results were messy. For months they were photographed tumbling out of cabs, careening around once-fashionable clubs, pie-eyed and pathetic. Sex, too, provided a form of comfort. Yates bragged that Hutchence had "the Taj Mahal of crotches" and told any journalist gullible enough to listen how they'd broken every sexual law and all but rewritten the Kama Sutra. Inevitably, Yates fell pregnant. This, to her mind, cemented the relationship and proved Hutchence's love for her. But despite a bold public performance, Hutchence was deeply unhappy. His whole demeanour had changed. He was uncomfortable in his own skin. Gone was the gallant guy with the flowing mane and the gypsy mystique, the tight trousers and the big hello. Hutchence became the shy, mumbling inadequate, the "wallpaper" he had described that night in Boston. Observing him now as the rest of the country did - Paula wouldn't let him near a friend of Geldof's - it was sad, sometimes shockingly so, to see him in the newspapers and on TV. It was the little things that would upset you: the inappropriate hair dye, the just-too-young clothes; the puffy face and the unfocused gaze. Even his walk had changed. The baby, Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily, was born, and the situation worsened. Although Hutchence loved the child unconditionally, he found it difficult to equate fatherhood and rock stardom. Uncertain of his musical tastes outside of INXS, Hutchence began to draw up sketchy plans for his own album. As news of this project broke, a women's magazine asked me if I would interview Hutchence. I said that hypothetically I would, but doubted whether Hutchence - now fully under Yates's spell - would consider even being in the same building as an associate of Geldof's. A message duly came back saying that he wouldn't share the same postal district as me. I was under no illusion that this dispatch came from Paula Yates. For Hutchence, the darkness was gathering. Torn between home life and the high life, Hutchence was failing on all fronts. He couldn't be a good dad and a dedicated hedonist, but having trodden that path for 20 years he couldn't change. Unused to such substance abuse, Yates was going off the rails, neglecting her kids. Hutchence couldn't handle it. On 22 November 1997, he hanged himself in a Sydney hotel room, with his own belt. He was 37 years old. The speculation surrounding his death was intense. Auto- asphyxiation was suggested. Was he really in search of the ultimate kinky kick? Suicide was ruled out and then reconsidered. Yates couldn't decide whether she wanted him to be remembered as a loving family man pushed to the limits or a wild spirit pushing the envelope of sexual experimentation. Either way, it was a lonely way to go. Having discovered that Hutchence had spoken to Geldof on the day of his death, the press went into overdrive. Had Bob, with his fierce personality, talked Michael into topping himself? Nothing of the sort. The two men had spoken about Bob allowing the children to visit Australia during schooltime. Admittedly it was heated, but at no point did Hutchence allude to suicide or express anything other than nagging frustration. For a time, I harboured a theory. Hutchence had, weeks prior to his death, started a course of Prozac. It is well known that, in certain cases, Prozac can inhibit orgasm. This would have driven Hutchence to distraction. Could it be that hanging himself was a last, desperate resort in the pursuit of that elusive orgasm? I recently put this idea to Kylie Minogue, who considered it carefully. "He was a very sexual being," she agreed. "But ... I don't know. Sometimes it's preferable - or at least more bearable - to think that he died like that. In a way that's sort of more true to... Michael. It's so awful to believe that he was in so much pain that he killed himself. But I'm not sure we'll ever know." Perhaps Bono said it best in his song "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get out of", the lyric specifically addressing Hutchence's dilemma: "I never thought you were a fool/But, darling, look at you/You've got to stand up straight/Carry your own weight/These tears are going nowhere, baby." At the conclusion of each angry and tender verse, Bono, at the end of his own tether, takes the news of his friend's death with an agonisingly sorrowful "My, oh my". "I have no doubt in my mind," Bono told me in July, "that Michael killed himself. He felt that he was in a corner. He thought that he couldn't be a good enough father, or couldn't get into a position where he might be. That's what the song is about. As far as Michael was concerned he was stuck. From the outside, you could see that this wasn't always going to be the case, but that night he couldn't see a way out of the situation." It's a bleak afternoon in Hastings, where Paula Yates bought a cottage in late 1999. She never recovered from Hutchence's death, and her last days were lost in alcoholic torpor and a haze of medication that never seemed to help. The house had been a brave step, but she died of an overdose before she'd even finished decorating the back bedroom. So, in muted mood, we're sorting through her possessions: pink, shimmering things, fluffy negligees, and photos of Paula playing happy families. Bob Geldof is grimly going through legal documents, kids' paintings and the books that he and the woman he will always call "Yates" used to read together. As he sifts the detritus of his ex-wife's short life, I wander into that undecorated bedroom and, beneath a pile of curtains, find a box. It contains a pair of old shoes, worn and frayed but immediately recognisable. Black patent Patrick Cox loafers. Wannabes. "How ya bin, mate?" My, oh my. Hello! I just remembered I have another Canadian performance that some of you may be interested in.... When Andrew and Kirk did their special acoustic set here in Toronto a few months ago promoting the anthology, they were on a morning show called Canada AM. They did two interviews and two songs ( Never Tear Us Apart, and Shine Like It Does) which adds up to about 20 mins. I work for the program and got to talk to the guys and watch the performance in studio. That was really cool, because they didn't have an open audience. Just little old me and a couple of other staff members! The performance and the interviews are great. So if anyone wants a copy I can do that for you. Just e-mail me privately. The only cost is for the tape and shipping. And for those of you that requested the MuchMoreMusic special on INXS, I'll add it to the end of the tape for you. Let me know!!! Hi all, Like I said in the subject line... I know it's early, but I was wondering who would be interested in doing the Christmas Card exchange this year? I don't mean e-mail cards, last year, it was too confusing with that. So, I thought this year would be more special if we got together and did the snail mail cards like previous years. I think this year will be extra special considering the circumstances and it will bring a lot us together in this time. Okay, so who is up for it? I am NOT collecting names at the moment, but I know a few of you are interested already. I just want to see what kind of response I get on this topic. So, drop me a line if you are interested in doing it again this year. For those of you who have done it in the past, feel free to post your feedback on how you enjoyed doing the exchange, so people who haven't done it can get an idea what it's like. For those of you who don't have a clue as to what I am talking about, every year, towards the end of November, we start collecting names of people's addresses and you send out Christmas cards to those on the list. Everyone on the list must send out cards to the people on the list. Anyone can sign up for it, no matter where you are around the world. It's the best when people from all over sign up, because you get to see the different cards from all the different countries. :-) Okay, so I am ready for your feedback. A modern reworking of "Never Tear Us Apart," the song was also a smash in Australia, where it remains a top ten hit on the ARIA Dance Chart. Hutchence was one of ten industry greats - spanning nearly half a century - posthumously honoured at the the third annual Australian Live Music Awards (ALMAs), held on the weekend at Sydney's Fox Studios. Accepting the award was the singer's father Kel Hutchence, who said he was a very proud father and greatly honoured to receive the award on behalf of Michael. "I'm sure he's thrilled to be inducted into the Australian Live Music Awards Hall of Fame," Mr Hutchence told a crowd of about 500 who attended last night's event. "I'd like to dedicate this award to his daughter, Tiger Lily." The distinguished list of Lifetime Achievement Award recipients included Hutchence, 70s rock icons Ted Mulry and Shirley Strachan. Other recipients were: Dragon frontman Marc Hunter; AC/DC lead vocalist Bon Scott; Ray Brown from Ray Brown and The Whispers; Mi-Sex frontman Steve Gilpin; famous 50s star Johnny O'Keefe; Dig Richards and guitarist/songwriter Andy Durant from the 70s group, the Stars. High-flying rock group Powderfinger continued the winning streak that saw it bag six ARIA gongs this month by taking out the ALMAs award for Best Live Act in Australia. The ALMAs culminates annual Australian Music Week activities, and recognises behind-the-scenes players in the music industry as well as emerging talent. ALMAs president, concert promoter Michael Chugg, said the event was important in recognising Australia's music talent, without judging candidates solely on their ability to sell records. He singled out winner of Best Up and Coming Live Act, Fruit, who also performed at the ALMAs, along with Skunkhour, Mick Hart and Primary. Chugg said Fruit had joined the growing list of exceptional acts that had been acclaimed overseas but were yet to make it big in Australia. That list includes dance act The Avalanches, which took the industry by surprise with an ARIA awards haul of four gongs. "They're not that well-known in this country but in America they (Fruit) earn around $US7,500 ($A15,000) a night, they're a big band over there," Mr Chugg told AAP. "There's more and more of those bands every day. It's pretty exciting, really." Other winners included: Big Day Out, for Australia's Best Festival; Vibes On A Summer's Day, for Australia's Best Dance Party Event; and Best Tour By An International Act went to this year's Ricky Martin Tour. Sydney Entertainment Centre was given the title of Australia's Best Entertainment Venue, while Viv Fantin won best publicist for her work with Channel V and Big Day Out. -AAP From: "Stefan" To: Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2001 6:48 AM Subject: Re: INXS: Collective Soul's cover of "Shine Like it Does" Hi Jennifer, would be nice to get a copy. DO NOT post your address to the list. Also, this list will be snail mail cards only and not e-mail cards. I want to make sure everyone understands that. It was too confusing last year with the e-mail cards. Okay, so get your fingers typing and send me your name and address and I will add you to the list. Even if you already sent it to me, please send it again. I was just collecting names at the time. Thank you very much. Take care and let this be a very special one this year after everything that everyone has been through... :-) Hope to hear from you soon, Michelle (dutchie) Michelle McFerran Technology Staff Assistant direct number: 609-627-2568 fax number: 609-627-2940 Factiva, a Dow Jones & Reuters Company Factiva Technology Department P.O. Early on it appeared that either The Gift or Strangest Party was going to be the first song out, but Stay Young had a sudden spike of votes putting it into second place and granting third place immunity to "The Gift". In the end, it seems that The Strangest Party may have been a little too strange for the fans as it got knocked out with 16% of the total vote. Is Stay Yong or The Gift the next to go or will one of the other 18 other songs left start harvesting the votes? With so many songs left to choose from, any one of them is still fair game. Sorry for the date that this is being answered as I am about a month behind in emails due to moving and more other important things on my plate at the moment! I haven't read any of the other responses to this yet so forgive me if I repeat any sentiments here! I read this response and my mouth pretty much hit the floor! UGH! Here I sit, an American living in Sydney, 10,000 miles away from my family and friends and just damn happy that I am able to turn to phone, tv, internet, this list, etc. for any bit of news on the terrible events of September 11, thinking of my family and friends over there. And hearing how everyone is doing, etc. I would guess that MOST people DO care about, esp. when it is only ONE STINKING DAY after the tragedy!!!!! I can see you saying this heartless thought MAYBE even a week after, but ONE LOUSY DAY???? DO YOU HAVE NO HEART?!?!?!?????????? DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW TO USE THE DELETE BUTTON???????? GEEZ!!!!!!! Even inxs.com took the time to post their sentiments on September 12 and, as most websites, tv, etc. did, waited A FEW DAYS before getting back to "business as usual"!!!!!! Even ALL the tv stations here in Australia had nothing on but news coverage of the events for like 3-4 days!!!!! All day long!! Apologies to all the rest of you on the list here who I do and don't know for shouting and obviously being quite upset here! But this one just SICKENED me!!!!! Back into lurk mode....
