From: "Courtney Chase" To: Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2001 11:21 AM Subject: Re: [Inxs] NIC: earthquake Hello Michelle and all - Here was my day yesterday - I was flying home to Portland from Boston where I was for a short business trip. My coworker and I were suppose to go through Minneapolis then straight to PDX (Portland Int'l Airport). When we got to Minneapolis they had cancelled our PDX flight and put us on a flight to Seattle with a shuttle to PDX. I was sick and incredibly tired so I was NOT thrilled about this last minute change. We really weren't suppose to be in Seattle in the first place. Our flight landed at SeaTac about 10:45 and we got off hte plane and into the concourse - we weren't on the ground 10 minutes before the earthquake hit. Scared the holy living crap out of everyone - things falling from the ceiling, light fixtures bursting, etc. But we were all fine. With the airport being closed indefinitely at that point, as soon as we were allowed to leave via any form of transport, we rented a car and drove home. Luckily no one was seriously injured in the airport (that I saw or heard of), but it was incredibly unnerving. All but one of the windows on the control tower shattered. I'm not a very good flyer anyway, so the idea of flying in a plane who was given instructions from a "makeshift control tower" (their words, not mine) didn't set well with me. LOL. Driving was the quickest and easiest way to get home at that point. I am, however, still trying to track down my bag that they made me check at the last minute in Minneapolis. Wish me luck with that one. Apparently our flight wound up leaving about 5 minutes after we got home. It was an interesting experience to say the least. We're not use to that in the NW like you guys in California are ;-). I was incredibly glad to be home last night. More info than you wanted, but I just had to tell the whole story. Had our plane been delayed out of MSP by 10-15 minutes, they would have diverted our plane to PDX and we would have been right where we were suppose to be. Damn those on-time policies ;-). I think Davy was the only person within a 200 mile radius of the epicenter who for some reason didn't feel the quake... I'm not really sure how he managed that, but I think I felt enough for the both of us. LOL. Maybe this means that our house is earthquake proof??? We should be so lucky. Hope everyone is well. From: To: Sent: Friday, March 02, 2001 9:04 AM Subject: [Inxs] Michael and Adam's villa Hi all, I see no problem with Adam buying the villa at the price he did, nor do I see what's wrong with paying "in cash." For one thing, I doubt he *literally* paid "in cash," it's not like he (or more liekly, his rep) is going to get a weheelbarrow full of money to bring with him to the closing! ;-) Usually when people say they paid for a house "in cash," it's not to avoid a paper trail, it just means they bought it outright--no mortgage. I'm sure there is a paper trail of some sort, even if it is just a HUGE ATM withdrawl-lol, not that it's any of our business. As for the price he paid, so he got a great deal--good on him! As I recall, Michael didn't actually own the villa himself, it was owned by a holding co. managed by Colin Diamond (I've probably got that name wrong, it's early in the morning!) Sure, it was Mike's villa, but not in a legal, monetary sense. Nonetheless, when estates have to be closed out, people frequently end up selling things just to get them off their hands. It looks to me like this is one of those situations. Of course, we also know nothing of the housing market, the condition of the property, etc. I see no reason why Adam (or anyone else) should be expected to pay more just because he can afford to or because of who owned the villa previously. That's utterly ridiculous. I'm glad Adam bought it, Bono's got a house down the street from there (so to speak), so it just makes sense that Adam would like to be in the area too. Wishing I could go to the villa, ;-) Nanci From: "Courtney Chase" To: Sent: Friday, March 02, 2001 11:06 AM Subject: [Inxs] multiple password reminders Hey all - I'm not sure if Davy will be checking his mail anytime soon, so I thought I'd send a post telling you that we're working on the multiple password reminder issue. I hope this will clarify some things for everyone and hopefully give people a better understanding overall. Our team here at INXS.com consists of basically 4 people - Dan Jones, Matthew Marsland, Nathan Hull and myself. You may believe there is some huge production or web development team behind the scenes, but this is simply not the case. These guys put in a LOT of effort for no return to give to you guys (the fans) a good site. I look after production and organise "behind the scenes" stuff, which take an enourmous amount of my time. And I love it! Of course, the difference with the official site is that we can't just do anything, put up any video or audio we want or the like. We are officially "sanctioned" and everything needs approval. You must remember there is a distinct difference between us here at INXS.com and the bands management. It wasn't us who stopped Neil having multimedia on his site, and it wasn't us who stopped Neil from having lyrics on his site. Just because we do, doesn't mean the blame should be directed that way. It was a decision from management. Record companies and publishing companies are coming down very hard of late on unauthorised use of copyrighted material on the internet. It happens with every band. You may remember the case with Madonna taking a fan site to court some time ago? Even I have to apply to the right authorities for the use of INXS material. I am governed by no different rules that anyone else. I know for a fact the band, and everyone else really do appreciate what Neil has done in the past and what he continues to do. I have emailed Neil regarding a link to his site when INXS.com relaunches shortly with a new design. I know some people have had a problem with the fact the official site has no link to inxsweb.com. There are plenty of fans who are NOT members of this list. I receive a LOT of email for the band from people who are so appreciative that things like "Revolution" ARE made available. Do you think webcasting the Metro show last year was a simple task? It took a month of planning and then some time to have it available to everyone. The whole issue regarding news items has been taken a little overboard. Some things are posted on INXS.com which are already/have been posted on inxsweb.com. Why is that? Because there ARE people who don't see the news on inxsweb.com and I feel it important that the fans get to read everything about our favourite band. Is that such a bad thing to do? It has worked both ways over the past eighteen months. I personally believe if you are not reading the latest news on the band's official site, you are missing some important stuff. Call it "lifting", "stealing", "flattery" WHATEVER. I don't share that view. I personally think inxsweb.com is a great site, and I'm really happy it still is around for everyone. It is the best fan site and it's great there are so many INXS site online generally. I just think people need to be aware of a little more information before passing judgement. I don't share that view. As always, you complete missed the entire point and are trying to hide what is really happening here. When you take stuff from Neil's site, you lift it word for word, character for character. With respect to The Swing going platinum you even kept the list format the same so I could almost go as far as saying that copy the HTML, code for code. You don't even BOTHER trying to paraphrase anything. Neil owns a copyright on whatever he puts on his page, THE SAME EXACT COPYRIGHT that INXS holds on their material. You say its not OK for Neil to use your stuff because it violates copyright but then you turn around and violate his copyright. Its been like this since day one of INXS.com opening. And yes, Neil has borrowed information from your site, but HE GIVES YOU CREDIT. How much credit have you given him for what you have taken from him? You're a bunch of two-timing hypocrites, you always have been, and until you can learn to swallow your pride (or your stupidity, whichever the case may be) you always will be. And as far as you having to get permission to use things, that doesn't mean anything. So long as you are part of INXS.com you are the voice of INXS. Permissions or not, that doesn't change the fact that the voice of INXS can't follow its own rules. The only thing your pitiful "reasons" accompish is to delude yourself into thinking that the problem isn't your fault. But so long as you try to justify something that is wrong, it is your fault. You know, even kids who write term papers in high school know that they have to acknowledge where their information came from. How hard would it be, Darren, to tell the people in charge they need to credit their sources? Or is the truth of the matter that a high school graduate is more knowledgable than your content developers? And, while I hope I am not speaking out of turn for Neil, the last I heard, he hasn't been treated very respectfully by your lot. Has it ever occurred to you that apologizing to him might go a long way in patching things up? Or is that too much pride for you to swallow in one sitting? However all said, it is a fantastic non A-side. The high point being a little songwriting trick in the middle......where the conflict between man and woman that Michael espouses in the lyrics is brought to life (to it's end actually) by the not to subtle change in mood of the guitar solo/supporting instruments. When I first heard this song on radio I knew it would not be a single, apart from length and the lack of a really obvious dance motif, the production of it is excessive in points and almost non existent in others. I just subscribed to this list, and although it's probably not the best introduction I thought I might respond to the rather entertaining battle of the words which has gone on between INXS.com and INXSWEB.com. Everyone knows details were ripped word-for-word from INXSweb without acknowledgement by the site's producer, and I think it's lame how the site producer can post and avoid that issue so blatantly. For the past 18months a void has spurned between fans of the two sites. People stayed loyal to Neil because of his longevity in the INXS cause and because of the injustice he had been served, and I think it's tainted their view of the band themselves. Others rushed to the official site because Tim posts now and then and having being one of those people, I can tell you it's the only thing of any interest on the whole site (asides from perhaps the correspondent stories, but Darren doesn't do those, does he). Being new to the internet a few months prior to the site being launched, naturally I thought I was on a good thing. For a few months the whole site held a spectacle, but obvious corner-cutting and the dust growing on some of the "inner" pages of the site over the preceeding months, began to present the page to some disdain. Like the newest UK corrospondent's article, "Underneath The Covers", the cover (of INXS.com) is real flashy, but look inbetween and it's as illusive as what's under those sheets in the Shabooh Shoobah photo shoot. Now I am not trying to shit all over the official site, as lots of other fans sites have pages which remain un-updated for ages and ages too; but come on, this is supposed to be a official website. they HAD a webcast and they HAVE resident streaming videos... but the quality SUCKS compared to what's out there, so many people have gone unheeded with angst-ridden comments about not being able to hear it, and despite promises of improvements, nothing has been done. All the downloads need is a plugin, and it isn't too hard to find and offer as a download if you just do it. With all the effort that goes into getting permission for the "official stuff" - so much effort it seems there's not enough time to credit the little people - you would think they would extend the effort to make the pages stand out from other sites. That's why I went there in the first place, but I find myself sorely disappointed. Ask the site why pages have fallen into such disarray and we get fed the line that it's being redeveloped and relaunched. They've been saying that for almost six months. On one occasion I remember hearing that it will be "streamlined", which I think is such a shame because what is there has so much potential. Streamlining it won't make it more beneficial to the fans, it will just make the job easier for lazy site management. Darren Jones posts here in all his "INXS producer" glory in the effort to "clarify things" yet he effectively just manages to bitch and moan about the lack of human resources to run the site, and the huge amount of time and sacrifice he puts into it (so back off everyone..). I'm sorry, but how pathetic! He did not address the issues brought forward at all, why? Because he knows he is wrong and he just didn't want to admit it, not very diplomatic of a band representative if you ask me, anyone would think he was a politician. You don't see any other web-developer being so tactless as to COMPLAIN about the work they do in order to expunge appreciation. Perhaps Darren should look up "tact" in the dictionary too! He explains that there's only four people working on the site, well before stating the obvious about it being three more than a lot of other sites of this standard have, I doubt he would have any trouble finding help if he just ASKED. Or perhaps he just likes the attention he gets and the credit and wouldn't dream of suddenly having to sign off as "co-producer www.inxs.com" Really, it's all pathetic. Who does he think he is, a matyr? I don't deny that a official website would be a lot more work than others, but really, he's making it a lot harder for himself than it really has to be. If he wasn't so egomanic and just admitted that he needs help (which he obviously does when you a) look at the site and b) consider all his whining) then things would be a lot more smooth-sailing for everyone and low and behold, another brain on the job might take the time to paraphrase news taken from INXSweb, and shock horror, maybe even give that site credit. Davy, you say Darren never used to be like this, well it seems like all the "success" has gone to his head, and that really is a shame. Also, although I am curious as to what words were exchanged in your private email to Darren, I admire and respect your tactfulness and consideration for message board subscribees and the privacy of what fundamentally is a private argument. Darren obviously lacks these qualities and I think that is a real shame when you consider he is the "internet" correspondent for INXS. He's posted twice regarding this and I just think it is blatantly immature of Darren to have posted directly to you on a public message board. What was he hoping to receive? Sympathy? Support? OK so he's welcome to be defensive of some of the publicly-concerning comments you made about his work, but really he should have extended the issue privately. On the issue of INXS news, INXS.com generally gets things first and fansites branch out and take that news, crediting INXS.com as the source. Occasionally site's like Neil's post fallacious rumours which INXS.com never confirms, but 100% of the time these rumours aren't spawned by official ticket-retailing sites! My guess is that this American show IS going to happen... it's been rumoured for months and now tickets are on sale. For INXS.com to try and discredit Neil's "scoop" by saying "but it's not confirmed" is absolutely childish. I really don't think a registered ticket agency affiliated site would list a unconfirmed act on the books unless they were to add "still to be confirmed". I COULD be wrong about this but I really do think it is just a case of INXS.com trying to cover up the fact that they were the last to notify people about it. One classic example of this is the Ted Mulry concert. Someone came out saying "INXS" were playing, then INXS.com came forward and quashed that rumour. Now, a week later, INXS.com has come forward to tell us three members will be playing with another artist. Excuse me, but the commercial pointing that out has been on television AND the radio in Syndey for at least two weeks - you can't tell me that a commissioned advertisement for the concert was condoning an "unconfirmed" performance too. Also, I really dont think Jon, Tim and Garry would only "just" decide to do a show less than a week before it goes on air. INXS.com probably knew about the possibility of any entity of the band doing this thing as soon as they read it from another source and rang up management to confirm, but no, rather than make themselves look "scooped" by another source, they choose to put off the announcement for a couple of days so it makes other sites look foolish in not waiting for the "official word" to spread the goss. Go to the INXS.com message board and a lot of the time all you see is fighting. Public uproar and lewd comments... and that is only out of what already hasn't been censored. I didn't intend to insult anyone by this post, but this is just my opinion. Darren can't expect everyone to be gullible enough to eat his shit and praise him for it; yet if I posted this on the official message board, the message would be deleted before one could even blink. Now I can appreciate wanting to delete messages that would hurt the band, but isn't one being childish if they shut out the criticism directed at them but then don't hesitate to come here and publicly put shit on someone else? Plus I have seen the message board with posts criticising other posters and they never get deleted either; and why? Because they don't hurt the band... or Darren. I lurked on the message board for a long time, and only recently began posting there, but really it's all so pointless when you say something and wonder if it's going to be there in the morning, and so constantly have to watch what you say so I don't think I will be going back. I am unhappy with the site but I would never dream of posting that because there would be no point. There's a lot of negativity and upheaval on that message board and I think inadvertantly, the fact that it is run by someone who can be negative and complaintive about his work on it has something to do with promoting that image... and that in turn, affects people's perceptions of the band. Hypothetically, if the site was run by someone who never complained and posted regularly with energetic and entertaining emails (instead of the plain stuff he ever contributes), it would invoke positive action. I KNOW the site would benefit - just look at it when Tim posts! Official sites always have much more potential and user-perks that other sites could ever have, but unfortunately the line between this official site and normal fan sites is wearing very thin. The only plus in INXS.com's favour is that Tim posts once in a blue moon and one of many benefits fan sites have are that they are run by much nicer people! My heart goes out to all those fans offline who generally don't hear all this news and think INXS are dead and buried, but at the same time I think of myself coming online and seeing the state of things and I just have to sigh. It's a no-win situation. (in a perfect world) why can't we all just be friends and remember what this is all about - the band? Not making a name for oneself and expecting listless amounts of praise for all the work and time you've done. Neil could be a lot more active about this than he is, but he isn't, and that says something about his priorities. :) Hoping I don't have to find me a fire extinguisher on my first post! It's a no-win situation. (in a perfect world) why > can't we all just be friends and remember what this is all about - the > band? I hard to address this breifly, but I will give it my best. My, personally, I have a few issues with the way I have been treated by management that resulted from an MP3 site I ran some time back. I am in a less advantageous (sp?) situation than Neil as I have to admit that what I was doing at the time was in violation of INXS copyright. However, I don't feel that the manner in which I was spoken to by management was very "civil", to borrow Darren's wording. I've tried to resolve my problems with them politely but all I received back is more uncivility and I've grown tired of dealing with it. I have offered my apologies to management more than once but never have they returned in kind. With respect to Neil, I know that he has been treated similarly on occasion and its not really my place to bring out the specific details of that other than to say, unless there is something he hasn't told me, he has yet to receive an apology either. I would be willing to go as far as setting aside my issues with the band if they apologized to Neil and stopped stealing his stuff (or at least give him due credit) - neither of which is an unreasonable request and both of which would be the "civil" thing to do. So, when you ask "why can't we all just be friends?" thats something that only management can answer. > Neil could be a lot more active about this than he is, but he isn't, > and that says something about his priorities. :) Neil has a cooler head about these things than I and for that I have to admire him. Well like I said, I could have been wrong. But when certain people take on certain attitudes, it can kinda make people question the credibility, you know? > So, when you ask "why can't we all just be friends?" thats something that only management can answer. That question was rhetorical in that in the way things are, it will never be. Naturally we fans would love to be friends - especially with management, but from what you have said, and what I have not only seen first hand but heard about from very close friends of my own, certain people have to learn a little ettiquette. Davy, that MP3 site of yours may have theoretically been in breach of copyright, but with juggernauts such as Napster and all those other big fish to fry you would think the band would give up the issue of MP3's as a lost cause. Now people can't get it from you they just go elsewhere. Plus, if this Napster scandal is anything to go by, copyright legislation is very thin online, there are plenty of little legalities and loop holes which leave artists powerless to restrict things. Internet copyright is primarily (at this stage) in a state of "a gentleman's agreement" in that it is very hard to police and if one were to go "underground" things could go undetected. Sure, there are new laws being introduced all the time and it is best to remain on the level, but all this jurisdiction is ridiculous. Fan sites are supposed to promote the band, and if we're given no material to do that, then what's the point. What IS the point when whatever material we do get is ripped off by official giants to promote their own site? It seems like by coming down on fansites and yet allowing downloads and lyrics on INXS.com, certain people are forcing people to rely on INXS.com for resources and let the fansites crash and burn. To me that sucks because a band should promote fansites which are injected with an individual's love and dedication to them all shown in a unique, refreshing light. They should condone fansites to having all resources being made available to them. But no it seems they're trying to ensure hits to their site. Now I know Darren says it was management's/publisher's decision to come down on Neil's site, but really, all they need have done was ask for an acknowledgement. I really can't see how guitar tabs and lyrics would hinder record sales... if anything it would promote it, and as for musicbooks with guitar tabs in them, unless they're planning on rereleasing them, all taking the tabs away has done is increase the secondhand market for these books tenfold... and ironically it is the private vendor and not the band that profits from this. Like I said, I was regretfully wrong about the news regarding the US show, but when you can't even distinguish the motives of someone's actions, how can you believe the motives behind their words? This one is from CD NOW allstar daily... http://cdnow.com/allstararticle/fid=253632 ============================================================== Tour In May? March 6, 2001, 8:00 am PT Midnight Oil The plans are still tentative, but an Aussie triple bill with Midnight Oil, Men at Work, and most notably the resurrected INXS is looking like it will be touring the U.S. starting in late May. A venue calendar lists all three bands as playing the Chastain Park Amphitheatre in Atlanta May 28, although a note on the official INXS Web site says this date is not yet confirmed. A note on Midnight Oil's official Web site says that band will be on the road in the U.S. in May and June, while a Men At Work site lists a U.S. tour from May 28 to June 30 with the dates and cities still to be announced. A publicist for INXS in Australia tells allstar that the band, with Jon Stevens filling in for the late Michael Hutchence, will be touring the U.S., but adds that the dates have not yet been hammered out. INXS is also expected to tour Europe and the U.K. this summer. Stevens has already made over a half dozen appearances with the surviving band members billed as a "special guest," including a well-received Olympics closing ceremonies performance broadcast around the world. Stevens is best known for fronting Noiseworks, an Aussie band, which recorded three albums for Columbia in the late '80s and early '90s. Also on the books for June is an INXS best of set from Rhino Records. A label spokesperson confirms that the two-CD package will include 42 songs and feature all the band's hits, as well as some B-sides, tracks issued only as singles, and some hard-to-find early material never issued on CD in the U.S. The U.S. release date is June 5. -- Sorelle Saidman =============================================================== See Ya! I don't know about Here Comes II, that's a Dekadance and B-side thing....probably it was not released on CD. There's not much to this release for the hard core fan, maybe just alot of the stuff is digital and not every fan has it in digital. Maybe there might be some remixes or something and Let it Ride some might find tough to get (This all disregards acquiring MP3s - if that was the case you could get anything easily). To me though if you've got Rhino putting out some of your stuff it's a step backwards LOL.....I've seen some of the stuff they put out and...generally it's stuff that the use by date is well surpassed. Having said that though, compared to the Mercury/Atlantic release there is less chance to argue about tracks being left out here. 42 is a heavy lift from the INXS catalogue.....probably equates to about 25 percent of all there released recordings. Here Comes II was definitely not on CD before, though. There are some interesting choices, but I agree with the majority of you (so far) that there isn't anything on it all that rare or exclusive. Where are the unreleased Michael tracks we've heard so much about over the last few years? Perhaps the band is still holding on to them for a separate release? I'd also like to see Do Wot You Do and Jackson included (or at least some of the Aussie Dekadance songs that aren't available on CD elsewhere.) Including one or two of the Terence Trent D'Arby-led INXS songs would also have been a nice bonus... seeing as how "the reunion" telecast never made it to the US. I don't know about Here Comes II, > that's a Dekadance and B-side thing....probably it was not released on > CD. Here Comes II was a Dekadance track and, to the best of my recollection, none of the Dekadance tracks are officially available on CD. Here Comes II did show up as a B-side on a couple of 45's which may be one reason this track was chosen over the others. I think, but am not sure, that this is one of the few remixes done by a band member which may have been another reason. Aside from that, INXSive on CD is a pretty rare find - probably rarer than Japanese Kick. Getting "We are the Vegetables" and the original version of "The Loved One" would make getting this CD worthwhile for a lesser enthusiastic collector than I. > There's not much to this release for the hard core fan, maybe just > alot of the stuff is digital and not every fan has it in digital. I would have to agree. The only impetus for me to buy this album would be to get Here Comes II in digital and, for one of the few times in my life, I am leaning towards the side that its not worth the $30 just for that. > Maybe there might be some remixes or something and Let it Ride some > might find tough to get (This all disregards acquiring MP3s - if that > was the case you could get anything easily). Actually, the MP3 copies of Here Comes II I have found aren't very good, IMHO - too much static. Regarding remixes I have left a few comments about that below. > Disc 1: > Burn For You > Dancing On The Jetty The only place I thought a track "missing" was here. Why no Johnson's Aeroplane? > Disc 2: > The Stairs (Live) Why the live version? Track listings tend to follow what was released on singles and in Europe the live version was essentially the featured track off of the single for this song. I guess this also allows them to include a LBL track so that all the albums are covered. IMHO, the studio track would have been a better choice, but I am at least glad that they included this song. > Don't Lose Your Head Rhino tends to release albums that are "family" oriented. There is another version of this track where "you wake in the morning with a DEALER for a friend". I wonder if Rhino will opt for this version over the album cut. > Searching Again, the track listings seems to fall in line with released singles, which is no surprise. As with The Stairs, the featured version of this song on the single was a remix, not the album cut. I wonder if Rhino will go with the single mix or not. I would also have to agree with Neil (I think) who said Jackson would have been a better B-side inclusion. As a "hard core fan" this is one of the very few tracks I don't own (except for a copy provided by a fellow fan). This, or an unreleased track, would probably get me to put down my $30. As always, just my opinions. Davy Tired of looking at everyone's lame personal homepages which contain nothing that YOU care about? That's _ALL_ INXS ever was. Nothing more, nothing less. All that making music crap was just a diversion. And Chris, a crafty guy he is too. You have to admire the way that he tricked all six of the guys into a forming a band without them even knowing it! And then, he shows up years later to start managing them. Whats even more amazing is how he KNEW that those six people would be able to survive the music industry on their own, without any talent to show, for those first couple of albums before he could slide in and take over the reins. Requires a lot of patience to set up a plan like that too. But, its all over now. You've discovered "The Great Chris Murphy Consipiracy". Dumb luck for the most part. I found mine for $8 at a used CD store. A copy on CD showed up on E-bay a few weeks ago, its the first CD copy I have seen on E-bay in over two years - sold for just over $50. I can't ever recall seeing a copy in Goldmine. Prior to the challenge voting put Neil Kothari, Jon Stevens, and Chris Murphy in a dead heat with the possibilty of any of them leaving. In anticipation of the (possibly) upcoming concert in Atlanta, contestants had to swim from the Australian shore all the way to the southeast coast of Georgia and Jon pulled it out in the fastest time. Wether he was eager to get to the concert or just trying to escape from being voted out, we'll never know, but either way he still won immunity. As far as who was expelled, after the immunity challenge a large number of votes were cast for Chris Murphy. While it is possible that a last minute rant against Chris by somebody on the list may have swayed voters, the official reason Mr. Murphy was kicked off the island was for... indecent exposure? I appreciate Darren taking the time to write, and to be quite honest, I agree with much of what he wrote. I realize alot of people jumped in the fray, and much has been said both publicly and privately between the varying sides (yet again), but I have stayed out of this particular battle... though I admit I've been a somewhat amused bystander. One one point, though, I most respectfully (and vociferously) disagree: > The whole issue regarding news items has been taken a little > overboard. Some things are posted on INXS.com which are > already/have been posted on inxsweb.com. Why is that? Because > there ARE people who don't see the news on inxsweb.com and I feel > it important that the fans get to read everything > about our favourite band..... Call it "lifting", "stealing", > "flattery" WHATEVER. I don't share that view. I'm sorry, but I just don't and will not agree with that. Lifting, stealing, etc is not an opinion that one can just have a view on. Plagiarism is a serious offense, and the fact that some news is taken word for word and posted onto inxs.com *and not credited* is a serious issue. I'm really at a loss as to understand why the official site won't just do the right thing, and credit its sources. Is it that hard to do? Is it that hard to credit a fan site (oh no!) with having had INXS news on the web before the official site? This should not be an issue of pride; rather of fair play and common courtesy. Of course, it goes beyond simply news -- the gigography has massive sections taken verbatim from inxsweb.com; sections that I personally put together with my own information and research. If that's not a copyright violation, I don't know what is... > I personally think inxsweb.com is a great site, and I'm really > happy it still is around for everyone. It is the best fan site I appreciate that, and hope that we can continue the slow process of healing that the INXS online community so desperately needs. Being forthright enough to give credit where credit's due will go a long way toward achieving that goal. -neil -- Neil Kothari, M.D. Bellevue Hospital/New York University Medical Center An Excess of INXS -- http://INXSweb.com NP: Maxwell "Get To Know Ya" The Best of 2000 -- http://www.geocities.com/nkoth/music2000.html From: Skippythefrog@aol.com To: inxs@nightswimming.com Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2001 5:11 AM Subject: [Inxs] Re: nightswimming.com mailing list memberships reminder I know it says this reminder is sent out once a month, but I have received it twice today, once yesterday, and generally about 3 times a week since this list moved. why is this happening? It's so hard for us to travel around these days, so hopefully they'll have a Florida date. There seem to be quite a few list members from Florida, so hopefully that's indicative of their fan base, and they'll come down here to play some music (and visit some great beaches, night clubs and golf courses)! Don't get me wrong, I still believe that Michael Hutchence was by far the best performer I have ever seen (and I have seen many many performers), and NO music touches my soul the way INXS' music does, but Bono is an outstanding performer and my wife Tammy and I both agree that this, with all the lighting and the props, was the best show, VISUALLY (and one of the best, musically), that we've ever seen. The best part of the night though was when Bono dedicated Stuck In A Moment to Michael. I have to confess, I was hoping for them to "attach" a little something of INXS music to the end of the song, but still, it was very heartwarming to know that they still think of Michael. Take care, and see this show if you can! Dennis (not regretting that we spent the extra money we had- on tickets to this show over going on a cruise ship!) A Brisbane Supreme Court judge sanctioned a compromise of claims by the estate for millions of dollars allegedly owed to it by nine trust companies linked to Hutchence. Under the compromise, the estate will receive only a nominal payment from the trusts. Hutchence's will executor Andrew Paul, who sought the court order, had not been prepared to pursue the claims against the trusts without his legal costs being indemnified out of the estate. This was opposed by Hutchence's family. Hutchence's October 1996 will allocated half his wealth to his daughter Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily upon turning 25, and equal shares to his mother, father, half-sister, brother and Paula Yates. However, the first $US500,000 realised from the estate had to be split between Greenpeace and Amnesty International. Hutchence told his family he owned multimillion-dollar properties in Australia and abroad, but they did not form part of his estate which was technically bankrupt when he hanged himself in a hotel in November, 1997. All rights reserved. WHEN it comes to rock-music books like these, you really have to be a bit of a fan of the man or the band to get a lot of reading enjoyment. If you're not, there's not much attraction. These new books on Oz stars Johnny O'Keefe and Cold Chisel, especially, lack a spark in style and spontaneity. And both are a little lost in a time warp of relevance. O'Keefe rests heavily in the past, and this book has missed its due-by date by about 20 years. He was very big in Australia in the late 1950s and early '60s, but like a lot of early rockers, he was swept aside in the mid-1960s by the British flood led by The Beatles. That flood changed the rock-music landscape dramatically and for ever, and O'Keefe struggled. He became more erratic in his behaviour and he fell into a bit of a hole. I remember seeing him in concert in Canberra once, in the early '70s, I think. It was a short and sour performance before a very small audience and he harangued the faithful few, almost blaming us for all the empty seats. There have been various attempts including the current stage show to create a legend that he was Australia's king and creator of rock, but the efforts are not totally convincing. O'Keefe had some brief moments of glory in the mid-'70s with Mockingbird (recorded with a woman called Margaret McLaren) and a ''mixed'' tour with Bill Haley. But basically the good times had already rolled away - long before his death on October 6, 1978, at the age of 43. Author and committed JOK fan Damian Johnstone tracks the years of success, excess and tears in a thorough but fairly boring manner. The book records the facts including JOK's big car crash in June 1960 and his liking for marijuana, alcohol and various other drugs in a slightly dry, detached and wooden manner. It would have been an ideal Christmas present in 1979, but now seems dated and, probably, of most interest to old, devoted JOK fans. The Cold Chisel story also misses the beat. It tries to capture the wild side of the Chisel magic but you never really get the sense of being there. The band's creativity, individuality and volatility, as well as the more debauched side of life on the road, are flattened in a lifeless style of writing. This book also suffers from the lack of immediacy. You are very aware of the lapse of time from the band's glory days of the late '70s to the mid-'80s. Author Anthony O'Grady tries hard to light the fire of intensity, but it never really catches. Even O'Grady's reprinted articles written at the time when the Chisels were burning seem laboured and listless. The Chisels' talents, especially Jimmy Barnes (when he sang superbly rather than screeched), Ian Moss and Don Walker, deserve a much better tribute than this. Perhaps the three of them should get together and write a book but they could probably never agree on the real story. The book on Hutchence, which has been around for a few months, has a much wider appeal despite some lack of objectivity. Well, it was written by his sister, Tina Hutchence, and his mother, Patricia Glassop. And there are some harsh judgments especially on Michael's dad Kell and last partner Paula Yates. Indeed, there's ''a note to the reader'' at the front of the book, almost apologising for what you'll read further on about Yates, explaining that the biography was completed before her death ''just as the book was about to print Paula Yates died tragically''. But they say it's ''a story that for the sake of [Michael's] memory and for [daughter] Tiger Lily should still be heard''. So they go in boots and all, and Yates doesn't come out very well. To be fair, nor does Michael Hutchence, despite the sympathetic and rose-coloured picture they paint. One thing's for sure. When it came to women, Hutchence couldn't help himself and, it appears, nor could the women. There were many, and they all seemed to maintain their reverence for him even when their times were over. Perhaps Hutchence was self-indulgent glowing in the rich life of rock-music success and wasting everything. All the expensive toys, exotic cars, the house in France, the beautiful women and wealth squandered in drug-taking excess and other irresponsible acts. Even more selfish because he seemed to have no sense of consequence and he deserted in death his beautiful daughter Tiger Lily. But like most things in life, there are shades of grey. We treat our stars like kings and expect them to behave like saints. Hutchence is probably the closest thing this country has ever had to an international pin-up pop star. He was a great performer a charismatic and talented man in front of a very gifted band. INXS never pushed too far beyond its boundaries of comfort and smooth-sounding formula for chart success, but the band worked hard, created catchy songs and broke a lot of new ground for other Australian acts. And it was Michael Hutchence who gave the band its edge and distinction. He shone on stage and sang with skill and strength a mixed vision where Mick Jagger and Jim Morrison merged, not in voice, creativity or menace, but certainly in style. This book is a mostly glowing account of another imperfect pop star who pushed too far an impressive and pretty fair account of the ebb and flow of Hutchence's fortunate, but ultimately wasted, life. As Geldof's former wife, Paula Yates, and her rock-star lover Michael Hutchence canoodled and cavorted, then crashed into a drug- fuelled oblivion, Marine has remained enigmatically in the background, supportive and super- discreet. Six years ago, when she was 30, she met Geldof at a dinner party in Paris. She did not speak a word of English. Neither did she know who Geldof was, nor that, once they got together, she would be game for any passing paparazzi. Geldof helped her cope with it (one of the first things he taught her was that if she wanted to read a book she should not sit by the window where she would be photographed) and she, in turn, has assisted him in picking up the shattered pieces left by Yates's death. The diminutive French actress has become a de facto mother to four children: Geldof's daughters by Paula, Fifi, now 18, Peaches, 11, and Pixie, 10, and their half- sister Tiger Lily, Yates's four-year-old daughter by Hutchence. By anyone's standards it is an extraordinary turn-around; new man, new language, new city, new family. But Marine just smiles at the idea she might be in shock at what's happened to her life. "I don't know yet. I'm just living it," she says. Last week, she opened in a production of No Way Out, which showcased for three nights last autumn and is now starting its run on the London stage. The play, at the Cochrane theatre, is the classic by Jean-Paul Sartre known for the contention that "hell is other people". Something Marine no doubt appreciates all too well. Its promotional material contains an endorsement from Sir Bob, in characteristically blunt language: "I was just pissing myself laughing ..." His other contribution has been to help Marine tone down her broad French accent. "I did not want to be the play's Inspector Clouseau," she says. "It was funny, repeating the lines with his Irish accent and my French one. But it's difficult. He can't be correcting me every five minutes." In the play, two women and a man have died, gone to hell and are stuck with each other for ever. Part of the plot is an eternal triangle: one is a lesbian who wants to win the affection of the other woman, who in turn wants the man. All must reflect on the bleak and evil acts that have put them where they are. Marine plays Estelle, a beautiful young woman who killed her baby. "But it's not depressing, it's very Sartrian, very witty, very funny, full of black humour," she says. Marine is well known in France both as a film and stage actress, but virtually unknown here except for a small French-speaking part in the film Braveheart. This is her first London run, in English, at the least glamorous end of London theatre. She is sharing a large but down-at-heel dressing room. The production might not have merited much attention were she not in it, but such was her reluctance to draw the spotlight to her home life that it was all an increasingly desperate management could do to persuade her to do an interview. Even so, she is embarrassed to be singled out. "You will mention the other cast, won't you?" she asks. "Even ze man who plays the waitress?" (For the record, they are Amelda Brown, Colin McFarlane and Mark Hayford.) Her wish to protect the children, who have already been through so much, is entirely understandable, though she appreciates that the public's interest in the story is not solely fuelled by prurience, but a genuine affection for "Saint" Bob. "I know that," she says. "And he deserves that. He's a great man." A recent report has suggested Geldof is sad and depressed, suffering from the after-shock of Yates's death. At a recent party he apparently told a fellow guest that he felt guilty about not "being there" for Yates in the weeks before she died and that, though he had great kids and a wonderful girlfriend, he could not help feeling down. Marine is scathing: "He's fine," she says, firmly. "He's -'ow do you say it? -he's on good form." In some senses, the last few months have been a period of relative peace, free of scandal and a respite from Yates's unpredictable behaviour, which included throwing stones at Geldof's window. Perhaps this has contributed to Marine's feeling, after six years with Geldof, of finally being settled. "I didn't really realise my life was here until recently," she says. "I was born in France, my life and my home was there and I continued to think that after I met Bob. "I go back often. My friends laugh at me because I use the Eurostar as a bus. Home was Paris first and London second. Now when I go back to Paris I have the opposite feeling. There's been a shift. This is where I feel better, this is home and I realised that just a few months ago." Her natural, light-hearted, al-most childlike manner must bring a bit of sunshine into what could otherwise be a rather gloomy house. With a fractured childhood of her own, she is bound to be sensitive to the needs of Geldof's children. After she met Geldof, she said she had been careful not to push herself into their lives: "I introduced myself very slowly to them because I know what it feels like to see your father with another woman," she said. "I don't push anything. But we have lots of good times together and I hope they like me as much as I like them." Marine's parents separated and she lived with her father until she was 12, seeing her mother at weekends. "We lived in a little village, like in the movie Chocolat," she says. "My father was an amazing man. He was a professional footballer who turned to be a poet, a troubadour. "We had very little money, we lived in a big house without electricity or hot water, we were real bohemians. He was not from a famous school or the Sorbonne. He was a real poet, if you know what I mean. He was powerful and talented, but to me he was just my dad." Her father died four years ago. Her mother, Mariette, came to London for the showcase of No Way Out last year and was so proud she sat through all three performances, though she speaks no English. Marine says her unconventional upbringing gave her the ability to talk to anyone and to fit in anywhere. She is not in the least grand. She shops in Paris for clothes "because it's cheaper there now and I like a bargain" and her most important London possession is her bus pass. Each day she walks over Battersea bridge from their mansion-block home to take a double-decker bus into central London. "I go upstairs because I like to see the city from the second floor," she says. "I love England. I hate the rain, but it brings a kind of cosiness which is nice sometimes. In Paris, people are more Latin, they like to live outside. Here, everyone wants to go home sweet home. Everyone drinks tea and the houses smell of lavender and I like that." She has just completed a movie in France, a sort of French Thelma and Louise: a true story of a pair of sisters who rob a bank and go on the run. As she's talking about it, the stage manager arrives with the Evening Standard, which carries the headline No Way Out Becomes Way In For for Geldof's Girl. It must be a relief, I say, to escape to France every so often, where she is not someone's girlfriend, but just herself. She shrugs. "I'm just me, here," she says. I had posts ready on teh stamps, Kylie and Hutch's duet, Mike's estate being settled, etc, but I s'pose it's all been said. Two things however I wanted to bring up were things I heard, but are not 100% sure of. Firstly, it was last week on the radio, the hourly news, and they were talking about Michael's will being settled, that Tiger would be the main benefactor (whatever..she gets most of the money) and that she would be raised by Michael's half sister Tina and mother Patricia. I haven't seen anythign in the papers, or the net to confirm this, so was just wondering. While searching new site's on the net, I did however come across several articles mentioning that Bob Geldof had split from his g.f, b/c she couldn't cope with Geldof's guilt over Paula's death. Well there's two things I'd really like to know WHAT THE HELL is going on!!!! And I REALLY doubt we'll ever hear the duet with Hutch and Kylie, she seems to be very reserved about her relationship with Michael, so I doubt she'd go and show this to the world. The email contained an attachment and from what I was able to find out, the attachment was the Hybris.gen virus, aka snowwhite, aka sexyfun. There are a few important that all of you need to know. At least one person on this list has been infected by this virus. This means that everybody not using web-based e-mail needs have their computer scanned with a virus tracker. I can say that the post originated from iprimus.com.au - so if you are living in Australia and using Iprimus as your ISP, the virus most likely came from you. However, this does not prevent the virus from being sent to other people on the list. If anybody on this list receives an email from the address hahaha@sexyfun.net and/or has the header "Snowhite and the Seven Dwarfs - The REAL story!" DELETE THIS MAIL IMMEDIATELY. The email contains an attachement that, if opened, will release the virus on your computer. I want to emphasize that this is a real virus, and not a "hoax" email virus. There is information about this virus at Symantic, McAfee, PC-cilian and other reputable virus scanning software companies. I've been working with computers for over 15 years and I know how to research the real viruses from the fake ones. As current owner of the INXS list, I would not be making this post if I did not have a serious reason to beleive that one of us were infected. For those of you who do not have a virus scanner on your computer, you can go to http://www.sexyfun.net/index.shtml (Despite the name, I swear its not a porn site). Here, you can read more about the virus and also get a list of links where you can download free virus scanning utilities. And keep in mind that even if you don't have the virus, keeping current anti-virus software on your PC is something we should all be doing anyway. New Zealander Jon Stevens will replace Michael Hutchence, who died in 1997, as INXS's lead singer on what's being billed as the Great Australian Bite tour. Stevens has performed several shows with the group, including the Olympics' closing ceremony in Sydney in September. Venue holds 3500. I was a little worried for a while, because Ticketmaster has it as "Rave/Eagles Ballroom", and the guidebook I found says the Rave is "acoustically atrocious"; I spoke with a live person, tho, and he was sure that INXS would be in the Ballroom. May still sound atrocious, but we'll see. Couldn't find a number for "The World" in Chicago, which is a little strange as it is "one of the largest outdoor venues in the US" with a capacity of 28,000. No idea about tickets. Not on Ticketmaster yet, so I would guess it is not completely official yet. Ohio shows: Couldn't find any info for the Cincinnati or Columbus Amphitheaters. I assume they are both *huge*. Also not on Ticketmaster yet. the Cleveland show at the Blossom Music Theater is actually at the Blossom Music Center, just outside Cuyahoga Falls, Sounds like it is a bit of a drive. Pavillion seats 5200, with room for 13500 in the hills surrounding. Guidebook didn't say if 13500 included Pavillion total or not. Couldn't find a Missouri guidebook, so no info on Riverport Amphitheater. Did find it on a map-it is *way* outside of DT St Louis. Anyone roadtripping, be prepared. It does appear to be right off of the main highway, so it shouldn't be hard to find. Just a long taxi ride/drive. The last date of the tour is at The Joint, which is a tiny venue connected to the Hard Rock Hotel. Capacity 1400. No idea when tickets go on sale-person I spoke with tried to be helpful but didn't see it on her schedule, which she said may mean that all the contracts haven't been signed yet. I have been unable to find **anything** about the Detroit date. Supposedly it is at something caleld "Pine Knob", but I am having no luck finding anything by that name. Anyone from Detroit on the list? And, finally... If you search Ticketmaster for "INXS", you see the dates fro Atlanta, LA, and Milwaukee. Search for Midnight Oil, and you only see two of the three. I just find that a bit odd. That's it for now. I am hoping to make it to Milwaukee, Detroit (if I can find it!!), Chicago, and Las Vegas. Maybe one of the other weekend shows, if time and money permit. I wasn't counting on a tour this year, dang it!! I don't have all my credit cards paid off yet!
