I thought you could "know someone" by knowing everything about them, such as what they looked like, where they lived, their birthday, who they were with, what they wore, what they did for a living. I thought getting to know someone meant finding out what you have in common. But it never occurred to me to listen to what they said to find out about who they really were. We can only see so much. In our lives, there are only so many experiences. When someone rushes it, or perhaps when it rushes them, their soul grows weary. *How much can you take when you've taken all you can?* I assumed that people who had "made it" also had it all together. I assumed that they knew what was up, that they had control of their life. * How can you stop when you don't know how to start? How can you go back when you don't know why you're here? How can you act when you've never seen the script? How do you choose when you don't know which is right?* I assumed that people who had achieved a dream, were wealthy, envied and adored must already have everything they would want * How you do all the things you want to do? How does a child become a man without a child?* I was wrong. There is much more to a person than their stats, money, achievement, lifestyle, or scandal. To know someone is to understand them. And all we need to do is listen. * All questions with * are from the song "Questions" on the INXS album Welcome to Wherever You Are. Thanks for reading! I've taken a long break from this list, gotten myself a new email address and decided to stop in for a while! So how've ya'll been? I only recognise a couple of people here (Angusted, K withaKris and a couple of others). Here are a couple of (slightly) off topic subjects people may want to talk about that are sorta related to this list (or email me privately if you don't think its appropriate) : - Is anyone here planning on buying "Just a Man"? - Did anyone go to the Cure concert a couple of weeks ago? I went to the 2nd Sydney concert and I was a bit disappointed that they played the dark depressing 90's Cure stuff instead of the 80's poppy songs. I was 10th row from the front though, so this made up for it. - Anyone brought the new U2 album? I love it. My favourite track is "Elevation". Some of it reminds me of the INXS "Welcome to wherever you are" era. Anyone else agree? Got a cool poster with it from Sanity when I preordered it too.... Anyway, good to be back. Looking forward to more INXS discussions with everyone. :) - Glenn valor@ozemail.com.au From: To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Friday, November 03, 2000 1:47 AM Subject: INXS: Hey Glenn! hey glenn and my fellow listees! i am new but my posts are out and about. I love the U2 album, which I purchased cause I thought "Stuck in a Moment'" was going to be about Michael. I do believe he factors in there, although he is not mentioned anywhere in the cd booklet. You are soooo right about ELEVATION...I was trying to put my finger on it but you nailed it. It is actually my first U2 purchase...I never got into them cause in the 80's Stateside, U2 and INXS were always on the charts together so I only wanted my guys to have the hits. I do enjoy it though. I wish there would have been a duet between Bono and Michael before he died. There are some times when Bono's vocals are particularly amazing, as in "Beautiful Day" and "In a Little While" and it would have been perfect with Michael's stylings when he really sings from his gut with passion (a la JUST A MAN). Damn! All the things you can't leave behind, I guess. As for JUST A MAN the book, I have read it. I don't want to say much on the subject as there has been a good deal of bickering on the subject of purchasing it here as well on other sites. My opinion is (it is what I think, so please dont yell at me, all you out there in LIST LAND) that it is priceless. Made me laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. So much of my anger about the whole situation is right there in those pages and actually made me feel much better. Let's face it; it has been hard for any INXS/Hutchence fan (another debate that was right here on the list), but this book did really make me see things more clear, rather than creating full pictures in my head, made from the small bits that we get here in the US. It is a beautiful book; have u seen it? The pics are amazing.....the great thing is that it is all "heart", not about all the hijinks of Mike and the guys, all about what they did with who and all that. If u read it, as I don't know if you have, you can really get a full sense of Michael, which makes it all the more tragic. Alright. I am sure I have myself a hole so deep, I will crawl through it to OZ....I always wanted to go there. Think of the money I will save on airfare! Love and peace to all of us! I am not done reading it yet, I am only on chapter 12, so I have a few more chapters to go. This book has given me some new insight on Michael's life as a kid, growing into an adult, and his adult life. I've read things that I never knew before about him. I know the band, well, specifically Garry, has made it known that he didn't want people buying the book. I am not trying to be disrespectful to Garry or the band, but I really like reading the book. I think Tina & Patricia say nothing bad against the band. This book is just about Michael and his life whether it's good or bad... it just points out the Michael was human and made mistakes in his life... So, that's just my opinion on it. I would recommend people read it just to get "the other side of story." I am not one to judge people or take sides, but I like to hear both sides. I think it was INXS' first 'real' studio album, where they weren't thinking of how it works in a stadium or how much pyrotechnics are we gonna use. I'm sure this song was given consideration to be released as a single, it's length probably leaving it as involuntary 'killer filler'. In other words a very good reason why people should buy albums instead of singles.. Ray Charles sings with Michael as is written in the credits, INXS originally approached him with 'Cut your Teeth', which seems insane considering 'Please' almost picks itself stylistically if not lyrically. It may have not been intended to have either of the duets on the album to be released as one of the first singles. But when Ray Charles said no to 'Cut your Teeth' I guess they weren't left with alot of options, luckily... (in my opinion). Thing is, it managed not to start throwing blame around, it just had interviews with friends and colleagues, and clips of old shows and interviews, including some real classic moments of TV, like when she had to interview some 'unknown' Australian rock band on british TV show 'The Tube' and almost didn't bother ("I'm not interviewing someone less famous than me!!!") Thing is, having watched it, it's so obvious the two of them were such a terrible influence on each other. He introduced her to bad influences, the drugs etc. She had a bag full of fallout from her marriage to Bob that made Michael miserable.. they really did drag each other down (with the help of the British tabloid press) Anyway, thought I'd mention it. Hey you guys, I was doing research for a project in Science useing Compton's 1999 Encyclopedia Delux, and just out of curiouity I typed Michael Huthcence, and what came up was an artical that said "Events of 1997" SO I checked it out and got: Nov. 22, 1997--Michael Hutchence, 37, lead singer of INXS, one of the most successful rock bands ever to emerge from Australia. The success of the album Kick (1987), which spawned the number-one hit 'Need You Tonight' and three other top-ten singles, made INXS one of the most popular bands in the world in the late 1980s. Although the group continued to sell out large-scale shows in the early 1990s, its albums suffered increasingly lackluster sales after its last major hit, X (1990). Hutchence dabbled in film but remained loyal to the band, which was preparing for a 20th anniversary tour at the time of his death. I just thought it was cool that it was in an encyclopedia and recognized them as one of the most successful rock bands From: "Glenn Misztal" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Wednesday, November 08, 2000 8:05 PM Subject: INXS: Re: e: e: : NIC Vote!!! >Pay attention, this is history in the making!!! Slightly off topic, I just want to say that with the new Spice Girls album out, I am totally disgusted by their attitude towards other groups whose sales on their albums have soared past the new Spice Girls album. I'm not sure if anyone else has observed this, but in the UK it seems that there is some sort of competition or artists believe they can achieve some sort of god-like status if they can accumulate as many Number 1 singles as they can. The Spice Girls seems very aggressive towards the boy band "Westlife" of late because their latest album's pre sales have doubled the girls latest album. I've even heard reports of the girls harassing the boys from Westlife and seen even pictures of one of the Spice Girls giving the middle finger to one of the boys from WL. If that's what fame does to you, then believe me, I would never want to be famous... Anyway, to get this back on track (and sorry for being a bit off topic) but it's good to see the boys from INXS never had or don't have any type of hatred towards any other bands (well nothing as serious as the situation above). From what I've seen their general attitude is (and this is in no way a quote, just the general feeling I get from them) : "We're all in this together, fellas...if we can come up with a great record, great, if we don't, then lets experiment, try new sounds and see what we can come up with..." 'Welcome to Where ever you are' was a great example of that....I love that album. It's obvious these guys are in it for creative expression and not just to knock off other bands from the top of the charts... Anyway, I've said my rant...thanks for reading. :) - Glenn valor@ozemail.com.au From: "Glenn Misztal" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Thursday, November 09, 2000 8:38 PM Subject: INXS: Re: Michael Hutchence movies >For those interested...Hutch was in a little known movie called >"Frankenstein Unbound" in which he played the poet Percy Shelley. What the Hell? 51% turned out nation wide. While that might not be the greatest turnout ever, in some areas as much as 98% of the population turned out to vote - in Oregon; Janie, Davy, Pat and myself contributed to the 81% voter turnout. 81% minus 5% of people who hadn't updated their records is almost 90%. So don't say we don't bother - we do bother. Of course in Oregon we only have to go as far as the mailbox :-). People get disillusioned with the system - they've probably been reading the same $hit you have. It's not perfect, but if we give up on it, we have nowhere to go but backwards. We've kept a constitution longer than any other Democracy or Republic with only a handfull of changes in over 224 years. We've always believed in where we've come from - and that has always made us strong - even when we're as sharply divided in ideals as we are right now, we are united in many, many other ways. > > Now, after your email, I will go and join the rest > of > the world, hanging on the edge of my seat, waiting > not > only to find out who will become the next leader of > the free world, but also who will be the next guy to > have his way with the White House interns!!! You know - America may not be a perfect country. We have our problems. Nobody is going to deny that. But I can safely say that most of us - no matter how much we may like or dislike each other - are proud of who we are and proud to be Americans. People have come to this country for centuries because it embodied freedom and liberty and a hope that most other countries have only just begun to realize. We have the government that country after country have modeled their Democracies and Republics around. We set the pace for international trade and relations time and time again. When we prosper, the world prospers. But if you don't want any part of that, I'm sure we can arrange for you to move to China or Cuba where you'll have no true possessions and have your news screened, history changed and your family told how to live their lives. How many kids you want? Sorry, you can only have one. You want to practice your own religion? Sorry - no can do. How 'bout that? Read 1984 lately? If you had an ounce of patriotism, you would understand why we Americans are so patriotic. We are proud of our heritage and proud of our country - wrinkles and all. And I don't see any other world leaders trying to keep the Palestinians and Israelis from killing one another and starting yet another war in the Middle East... do you? I didn't think so. Get off your damned high horse and make a difference in your own damned country instead of criticizing us for hour we run ours. It was live, so I prefer the live version of this song rather than the album version as the sound seems very confined to the studio. It's probably not the best song on the album to play for the band's comeback song (our good friend Dino Scatina from the Telegraph gave the boys a real beating about it the next day in his column as they performed "Heaven Sent" at the ARIAs couple of years before) but nonetheless, its one that I'll always remember as one of those sadder INXS tunes in the same league as of "Never Tear Us Apart" and "By My Side". - Glenn valor@ozemail.com.au From: "INXSED 2" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Sunday, November 12, 2000 7:49 PM Subject: INXS: Re: OTW#129 - Searching haven't been posting in response to the Song of the Week lately, but this one puts a knife through me anymore. In the studio it sounds far too clean and over produced, although still a good song. Live it seems to have a lot more "guts" to it as the guitar is higher in the mix. It seems that Mercury were also a tad unimpressed with the album version as they put the "Leadstation" mix out as the single promo. They say they were inspired by the Isley Brothers with this song......I'd never heard of those guys, and it shows the versatility of INXS. This was to be the fourth single off Elegantly Wasted but Michael's death curtailed that ...... maybe thankfully so as it would have, like the rest of the singles of EW, barely scraped the charts. Even with the impetus on more air play. I notice INXS.com has talked about the elusive "single" that is hard to get a hold off..........I must say it was completly wasteful of Mercury to destroy the copies they had already printed of Searching because of Michael's death......they could have given them to charity or whatever or simply let them circulate quietly around the world as a final tribute of Michael's lyrics and voice.........This is the one song on the INXS catalogue that is basically...... highly reliant upon Michaels talents as opposed to the whole band. In fact when taping the album for use in my car it was one to leave off. My dislike for this song was increased by its poor showing when played on TFI Friday here in the UK. I thought it was bland and way below par. However when I heard it live at the NEC I developed a new perspective of the song. It must have been the mirror ball environment it was played to. So I gave it another go and rearranged the play order of the album and found it grew on me and has become a firm favorite. ( something I also had to do with Michael's solo album before I could get into that )Further to this I heard the Leadstaiton mix for the 1st time a month before Michael died, while on holiday in Lanzarote and was hooked. The Leadstation mix is a better version I believe. As a single though, I believe it would've crashed and burned I'm afraid. Either way INXS had to have changed their minds ..... and that may have been sprouted from any 'criticism', or lack of interest they recieved after they debuted the song on the ARIA awards. Maybe even the album was to be called "Searching" LOL instead of "Elegantly Wasted".. A close analysis of the bands live gigs and mixes released show you that "Just a Man" and "Girl on Fire" we're also on the short list as possible singles. This cuts across the general list opinion that the second half of the album is superior to the first. Length aside "..Thrown..", "...Bridges" (one of Mike's faves) or even "Shake.." seem like more obvious singles to those who apparently aren't in the know as to what kind of song sells these days. I think everyone will be quite excited after reading the news. I've also read the first draft of the script which is quite interesting and unique. It would be great if everyone left their thoughts/comments and support on the message board. I know Tim reads it every day. I guarantee it will get a heap more attention than "The Reunion". Rich, the show is available on INXS.com and has been ever since it happened. They only performed those few songs with Terence. As for an accompanying album release, I guess only time will tell. Personally, I don't see the point in a double MH/JS vocals CD. It's like a "stuck in the middle" sort of thing. You either move on completely or really concentrate on making your last album special. I have heard most of the unreleased stuff - and it's awesome to say the least, and as a fan would love to see it out there. You can't forget that Jon is still regarded as a "guest vocalist" and not a permanent replacement. I'll be heading to Sanctuary Cove to cover the event for INXS.com aswell. "she is rising". it was before the album had been released, less than a week before it hit the stores, and i remember that i was driving home from work. the song came on, and though the song "elegantly wasted" was getting regular play, i thought "she is rising" would be the next single. i guess it was just the dj's pick for something new to play as he announced the concert. thinking back, i think "she is rising" would have been a great choice, much better than "searching". it took me a *long* time to get into that song, and michael's vocals throughout the chorus seem to lack a litte something. for a lot of people i think the vocals might have been too shallow, for lack of a better word. considering how deep the lyrics are, there seemed to me to be something a little off in how the song was layered. to me it feels like you could peel the vocals right off the top and leave the song itself unscathed. "she is rising", on the other hand, fits together perfectly, and the vocals play off the guitar & bass very well. it had me hooked right off, and i remember being able to sing along to it at the concert the next night. having only heard the song once, it was very accessible yet still substantial (ie not just a catchy fluff single like most of the songs out today). it also showcased a heavier side to inxs that i think they did not receive enough credit for. retrospectively i think it could've fit well on WTWYA, which also had a lot of driving guitars and a bit more of an edge than other inxs releases. WTWYA remains my favorite inxs album because of this, just as "she is rising" is one of my favorite songs off EW. best, meghann From: "leah sungenis" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Tuesday, November 14, 2000 1:08 PM Subject: INXS: Re: NIC: From an American on this list :-) Holy crap, Batman!!!! Anyways, it seems to only be causeing problems, like what > ever it was a month ago, Don't really rember, but I know Poor Gwen was stuck > in the middle, lets not start this again and drop the subject, ok? :) imho, debate is an essential part of any discussion group, and when different viewpoints are expressed there are bound to be people on opposite ends of any issue. the only time this seems to become a problem is when people resort to personal attacks, which in any case are uncalled for (not to mention a sure sign that the person doesn't have a handle on the actual basis for their argument). those kinds of arguments can be pretty easily dismissed. maybe i'm being an idealist here, but we should all be mature enough to disagree without getting personal. the simple fact that some people choose to violate that little rule of thumb should not be a reason to "drop the subject", whatever that subject might be. as long as people continue to use the subject line to tell us what their post is about, debate away! that way, if you don't care for the topic, you don't have to be bothered with it. personally, i welcome any posts that are thought-provoking... whether they "cause problems" or not. it's my right to disagree, as much as it is anyone else's right to speak. ok!!!!! two posts in one day... it's becoming obvious that i'm going out of my way to procrastinate here... back to work! best, meghann ps -- speaking of thought-provoking posts, where'd jaybird go? i miss your posts! pps -- while i'm at it, i remember from way back when, when i was on this list years ago, a bunch of really great posts from someone named junaid (or junxs). (or imho! haha) makes a big difference when I am reading someone's opinion. when they say "INXS should do this..." I take it as if they are presenting something that person believes is a fact. or when I read "it's obvious that FMDH just sucked" or whatever...I take it as if this person believes in their statement so much that they think anyone else who doesn't share that opinion must be terribly delusioned. now I'm not saying everyone needs to change how they state their opinions, but I'm just telling y'all how it affects me. Ben mate, I agree the U.S. isn't the best country in the world, but we've got to hand it to them - they gave us a lot of great things. Most of the movies we watch are from the U.S., many books we read are from the U.S. and I daresay some of the music we listen to is from the U.S. as well. Even some of the greatest actors and directors I've known are from the U.S.A. Where would we be without such great TV shows such as Seinfeld, Cheers, Frasier and Friends?? Where would we be without Kubrick, Spielberg, Lucas, Cameron or Lynch to direct movies? On the flip side of the coin, how can we ever have a chuckle at the U.S. antics with "Who wants to Marry a Multi-Millionare?" and the whole "Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky love affair"? We would never have get to use that old Aussie saying when something funny or out of the ordinary in the U.S. happens - "Only in America, eh?" The bottom line : These guys provide us with _entertainment_!! I am an american (or you might prefer, "stupid yank"). I am glad to live in this country, and I love so many things about it. I feel very fortunate I was born here, as opposed to somewhere like indonesia or yugoslavia, where things aren't so grand. but I have no hate for the people in those countries. maybe their countries aren't so great, but who am I to say? maybe some of the people who live there like it there and that's fine for them. but I can't hold it against them. the same goes with a place like australia. I'd LOVE to be able to live in australia (aside from the fact that I'd be forced to vote). or so many other places in the world which I think are wonderful. but nowhere is perfect. every country has their good points and bad points. even the USA. even australia. even tho I love living in this country, I have no love for it. when people say they love their country, it is usually implying that they love its government and what that country "stands for". I don't love that our country feels the need to fight other people's battles. I don't love the idea that I could have been drafted and sent to fight in a war that's none of my business. and kill other people who might feel exactly the same way about their own country. some might argue that the USA gave me my freedom. I was born with my freedom. I didn't choose to be born in the USA. it just happened. I know I AM fortunate, but this country didn't give it to me. a "country" is just a bunch of people, really. I didn't vote, eiither. I had no interest in either candidate. some people say, "you should at least vote for the lesser of the 2 evils, if that's how you feel! you have to make your voice heard!" well, I believe that by not voting, it is making my voice heard in the sense that I chose not to vote because I don't approve of either candidate. hopefully it will be noticed that only 50% of the population voted, and maybe they'll try to figure out why. but I do have to admit, that maybe I should have gone down to vote on the issues I do care about (since the presidential ballot is only 1 of the MANY things we get to vote on), but that's my bad. I think I was focused too strongly on the whole president thing, when I should have thot about the other issues. but I still believe in my right NOT to vote. if I lived in australia...it all depends. do you have to choose a president? or can you go down and vote "no opinion"? if I didn't get a choice and I didn't approve of either candidate, I guess I would be shelling out $50... just to make it clear, I am not standing up for any other american on this list. just myself. so please don't say "see how stupid americans are?" in response to what I've said, if you don't agree with it. if you feel that way, then please insult me directly. I know we have some true patriots on this list such as joe, courtney, and leah who probably don't agree with what I say. but I'm fine with that. it's just my opinion, and their opinions are just as right as mine. as far as thinking we need to solve racism. you are definitely right. but it's getting better. from what I understand, australia still has its own racism problems...aborigines. racism exists everywhere. it sucks. but I don't see it being much different when some folks make comments that include "stupid americans" and such. you haven't made an effort to get to know us personally. instead you are stereotyping americans into one lump sum. as if we all feel and act the same way and do the same "stupid american" things. to me, those are the same foundations that racism is based on. stereotyping and ignorance. so, by being american I feel you have put me into that category of being a "stupid american", and therefore I take your comment as a personal attack. if anyone else wants to continue this "debate", I would like to see it go to private. a little NIC (non-INXS content) is fine with me every once in a while, but this is going on too too long considering this is supposed to be a forum for and about INXS. but the last few posts by certain australian fellows have just hit me in a sense that I take it personally. yeah I have the option of deleting the messages whenever I see the topic. but...I didn't join this list just to delete half of the messages posted here. and lately, I would be deleting around 85% of the posts, if I were to do that. kinda pointless, eh? anyhow, I hope I'm not the only one who believes this should go to private for those who want to continue bashing each others' countries. go ahead and have your fun. but if you want to post here, please don't insult other people. let's get back to INXS! eric reed ===== got milkshake? get to know eric reed at: http://www.members.tripod.com/skippythefrog/skippy.html From: To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Wednesday, November 15, 2000 8:13 PM Subject: INXS: Re: NIC: To an American on this list In a message dated 11/15/00 3:04:05 PM Pacific Standard Time, valor@ozemail.com.au writes: << and the whole "Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky love affair"? >> Oh you guys are so lucky you didnt have to live through that! Enough with the misguided jingoism already. *Every* nation has its share of problems, and that includes both Australia and the United States. Of course it's easy to pick on the US -- it's the most important nation in the world so everyone the world over knows what's going on domestically in the country. On the other hand, I would easily bet you that less than 1% of Americans could name the current Australian PM. That doesn't make Americans stupid (again, it is the world's leading industrial and technological country) -- rather it demonstrates how little Americans give a damn about Australia on the world scene. To Americans, Australia's big accomplishment of the last ten years is hosting the Olympics... that's pretty sad considering every other Olympics is held in a US city. But I digress... My point is... I was sometimes ashamed in Canada at the lack of people who cared enough to place their opinion in that ballot box and consider the forced vote in Australia to be an honour to those who gave their life for us to have that privilege. And, after having lived in Australia for over a year, I can say that I love being "free" to walk home after work on the streets of a big city and not be mugged or raped, I can say I love being free to let my child watch the news at night and not be afraid that it will warp his mind with the violence and corruption on the Detroit news. I'm free to let my child watch cartoons on a Saturday morning knowing that there will be no breaking news coverage showing the capture of a child serial killer and the small bodies being hauled away in vans. So he can't just go out and get a gun..... I'm not real upset at that! You can keep your so called freedom and I'll take the Aussie way of life anyday where people don't take themselves too seriously, where you can trust your neighbours to watch your house not rob it and where my child is free to grow up in a really great country filled with wonderful people, incredible history and a government that doesn't slap the face of those who died for our right to vote. Forget all the chatter about freedom, I personally would like the freedom to enjoy chit chat about INXS without having to think about whether to delete the email 5 seconds into it...... For all those who don't know here is a basic working example.....that involves some 'key'..otherwise essential wording. When I first saw "INXS" I was very excited because I had never "SEEN" them "LIVE" before. It was very very dark and they started out with "TASTE IT". It was great when the "CROWD" "SUNG" along......"SWEET, SWEET, SWEET......COULD YA TASTE IT" as they all pointed at the "STAGE" on each "BEAT OR NOTE". It was very very "LOUD" and all the "GIRLS" in the "AUDIENCE" we're "SCREAMING" very very "LOUD". In my opinion it was the best "CONCERT" I have ever seen. Without doubt the "BEST" "SONG" of the evening was "THE GIFT".....it "SOUNDED" better at the "VENUE" then it did on the "RECORD". "FULL MOON DIRTY HEARTS" the "ALBUM" was an attempt by "INXS" to "PRODUCE" a very raw "SOUND" and they succeeded admirably. However it turned "FANS away in droves as it was missing the cleaner crispness of the "KICK and X ALBUMS". To date it has only "SOLD" appoximately 500, 000 "COPIES". While still impressive it is belittled by the "MULTI-PLATINUM" sales of the more "COMMERCIALLY" appealing "KICK AND X". In Australia, you have banned guns, and crime has skyrocketed because now the criminals have guns but the people don't and they can't defend themselves. I have a bunch of Australian friends who have been robbed and otherwise victimized since the forced gun turn ins that began after the 1996 debacle. Here we have a Constitution that guarantees us rights such as free speech, religion and ownership of guns. How free are you really??? As for racism, sure there are problems, but they are at an all time low. People here intermarry, they go to schools together, they live together and work together. I myself have roommates of different colour, whom I picked since it is my house. I agree with doug who said that the swing would have made a great single. coming off of my least favorite INXS album (or is it X?), that was a really stand-out track. it really rocked so much harder than anything else they had done up till then! I also think that the singles from welcome should have gotten more airplay. especially not enough time and beautiful girl! good choices as singles! but I hardly ever heard them on the air! wtf??? how could people not dig these songs? hehe umm...days of rust would have made a really great single! it's becoming one of my fave INXS songs of all time! I think the strength that the EW album gained was based pretty much on the single itself. EW was perfect for INXS. but as for the rest of the singles...they went the mellow route with everything, don't lose your head, and searching. I mean, EW was hardcore for INXS! they should have really gone with that and brought out songs that displayed their new sound. maybe she is rising, or shake the tree, or even building bridges (my fave INXS EVER!) I mean, building bridges started out slow, but in the end they just...(I'm having a hard time thinking of adjectives without using foul language here) kicked the crap out of everything else they had done! man, that song blows me away everytime I hear it! Hi all I was just a catching up on some mail and read Pedro's e-mail about EW. I too wasn't that keen on the album when I first listened to it apart from one song which really stood out. 'We are thrown together' is an amazing track. The melody on the verse and chorus is beautiful and the way Michael sings it with such emotion made the hair stand up on the back of my neck the first time I heard it (and still does). I thought the direction the song went in, in the later part of the track spoilt it. However, I have since grown to enjoy that section of the track just as much as the rest. In fact it makes the track for me now. The album fast became a favorite mine and is up their with Full Moon Dirty Hearts, Shabboo Shabba (Sorry about the spelling) and Welcome to where ever you are as one of their best (in my humble opinion). The album is a very well produced (perfect) collection of material that showed INXS' maturity but also confirmed INXS' love of music and talent. It annoyed me greatly that the album didn't sell better than it did. I couldn't believe that it almost went unnoticed by my fellow Britons. Another quality the album has is depth. I still find bits tucked in the mix that I hadn't heard/noticed before and that's import as it keeps you listening just as closely on the 150th playing of the album as the 1st. A great album!!!! And yes, the timing for the release of this (hopefully false) information on the eve of the third anniversary of Michael's death is extremely tacky. If it is true, I hope that the rest of the guys from INXS have nothing to do with it, as after all wasn't Michael supposed to be their best mate (20 years). I am so saddened at the respect or lack of for Michael Hutchence. No matter how good the other guys are and they are awesome, most people do identify with the lead singer of a band as it's focal point. Sometimes I wonder, but the rest of the guys should be so honoured to have had such a special person such as Michael in their band. And to go 20 years with no line-up changes in all that time is in itself very rare. Shouldn't they be proud of that fact!!! Please don't include Jon Stevens in the movie about INXS as it would be so unfitting and the ultimate insult to Michael. Perhaps they will use him from the angle of a friend of Michael's whom Michael has said in print (don't ask me where, I've forgotten) that he admires very much? Maybe he will be speaking from the viewpoint of how he saw the band members deal with their loss? Maybe as a fellow musician who has lost a friend? Jon is relevant to the INXS story in many ways, including being a guest singer. I think the criticism of his inclusion was jumping the gun a little. Did you go check out those pics of Tiger? She is truly a beautiful little thing. I prefer to remember the good stuff and TRY not to focus on all this crap that keeps happening. My mom is going to send me money for my b-day so I can order Tina & Patricia's book about Michael. So much controversy surrounding it but until I read it for myself I can only voice the opinion that based on the woman we have spent time with, it comes from Tina's heart. I often think about that day when you called me and said he was there in the studio. I later found out from an Australian article that he was at the Peninsula-our home away from home. I can't help but think "if only we had gone looking for him" Never did we think he was going to be dead such a short time later...We thought it was just Michael in town again... I met SO many celebrities in that one week that I've ever before. Anyway what I was wanting to ask was, for those ppl lucky enough to meet Michael Hutchence or any of the INXS boys (or any celeb for that matter) what was your reaction and theirs. I'd just liek to share my most recent celeb story. Okay, I was down in Brissie for the Mad Season Tour by Matchbox Twenty. We were staying in the Marriot Hotel the night of the concert as too were MB20. We were told that the band's 'chill out' room was on level 2 and two friends went looking around the hotel for the band but gave up to go shopping for some clothes for the concert that night. I thought i'd try my luck and went down to level 2 and didn't see much, and decided to go to the recreation level. I walked out to see that the spa was closed for cleaning and there was no one in the pool, so I walked up the other end and past the gym where there was only one person. As I was walking back to the elevator passed the gym, I though I'd have a look in, at the machines as I have been getting used to the equipment with my uni course, etc. Anyway I walk in and this one guy in there turns and says hi to me. I said hi back and kept walking, I got like two paces and realised it was none other than Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty's lead singer. Right then I was so shocked I couldn't speak, I couldn't think of what to say, I just turned around and he was just working out away, and we looked at eachother in the mirror, and I said 'hey I'm going to see you in concert tonite.' And he's like 'ohh realy, that's cool.' Right then I thought to myself how lame that was to say, but, he didn't seem to mind, and we talked for about five minutes and I got him to sign my album sleeve which I so convinently had in my back pack. I aksed if I could get a photo, and he said I don't mind, but not right now, and invited me to come and see them at the lobby b4 they left the hotel for the concert that afternoon. So we all went down to the lobby and waited, and realised there were two lobbies, so everyone else went to the other while I stayed behind, and sure enought they came down minutes later, well three or four of them. And Rob's wife too. They were talking and standing just outisde the elevators so I didn't wanna bother them so I stood patienty a metre away, waiting for a break in conversation to ask for a photo, but then security came along and told me to go away, and by that stage the band had gone to the staff elevators and into their cars and left for the concert. I was a bit bummed to miss teh opportunity to get a photo with Rob, but at least I have the autograph as proof. But one thing that has gotten to me is I can barely remember all what Rob and I said. I mean, I was so shocked to see him, and I'm sure I did make sense, but I just can't remember what we spoke about. So that's why I thought I'd ask here, see what other ppl's celeb meetings have been like. Anyway, the concert went off, I have a signed album of MB20, and memories that will last a lifetime. I've had some incredible luck meeting some of my favorite musicians. I got to meet Catherine Wheel at a meet and greet after one of their shows in Boston, but my favorite ones have been bumping into bands at other shows or their own shows. I met the band Juno after their show at the CMJ festival last year. They were the last band to play at CBGB and they played to about only 25 of us, but they played as if they played to a packed stadium. Afterwards they hung around to talk to us until we were all kicked out. The next night the same thing happened at the Jejune show. They were the last to play and once again there was only about 25 of us. I got to meet the guys at the Sheila Divine record release party. I was even invited to the private after show party. I saw Juno last fall at the Middle East and saw Arlie Carstens (vox/guitarist) standing right behind me. Said hello and he actually remembered us from the NY show. I was at the Catherine Wheel show this past spring and the guys from the Sheila Divine were there so I yakked it up with them for a bit. I met Chris Colbourn (from Buffalo Tom) outside of the Middle East in Cambridge, MA while waiting for a friend. We were going to see that Posies that night there. After the Posies show I very briefly met Ken Stringfellow (of the Posies). When leaving the Middle East again I bumped into Chris Colbourn again and we talked for some time. Last month I went to see Bette Serveert and while getting a soda Carol Van Dijik (vox/guitarist of Bette Serveert) came to get herself a cup of coffee so we spoke for a bit. Shortly after that Bill Janovitz (of Buffalo Tom) was standing next me so I got to talk to him for a bit. After the show I went to a friends party and who shows up at the party but the entire band of Bette Serveert. Moral of the story - get away from those stadiums, go to a small rock club where you can see incredible bands that get no radio airplay and you may even bump into one of your favorite musicians :) -- Sue sue@mdc.net http://www.mdc.net/~sue In my cdplayer: Brian Charles - sadderdaydreaming From: To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Sunday, November 26, 2000 1:30 PM Subject: INXS: Re: Meeting A Celebrity In a message dated 11/26/00 4:36:56 AM, q9706742@topaz.cqu.edu.au writes: << I thought I'd ask here, see what other ppl's celeb meetings have been like. >> I have met several celebs over the last 15 yrs. My friends had seen them open for like 3 or 4 Hooters shows in a row and my friend said to one of the N. The guys from the Hooters are really cool and they do remember you it could be a year or two from the last show--but they used to recognize you by name. In 96 I met Def Leppard in the hotel bar in Dallas. A bunch of us got to know the tour manager well. I was so determined to meet Michael as he was the man for me. Earlier on that evening while Inxs were on stage I handed Kirk my beaded necklace which he kindly took. So when I saw Michael coming out of the leisure centre wearing my beads which he had obviously taken from Kirk, you can imagine my heart missed a thousand beats. Michael stood and chatted to me for a while and I told him that those were my beads (how sad). He thanked me and off he went. As I was in complete shock although I stayed cool my memory of our conversation is blurred I can remember holding his hand and touching his chest when handling my beads. At the age of 7 I was learning the violin and for some reason I had a liking for really old buildings so those two factors made the video clip really stick to mind. I loved it. The song was really good too... I don't think I really understood the song until I was much older, but it's always had a powerful impression. I remember hanging out for it each week when it was charting on the music shows. Now... nearly 14 years later I have finally secured my own copy of Kick the Video Flick! Hearing it live is always an amazing journey too. Now onto the celebrity thing... Mitch I am glad you had a good time last week for the Matchbox Twenty concert... I came close to going to that myself but passed. Funny you mention the Marriott because I met INXS there (in Brisbane) after the Tim Rice show in April, and all I have to say is what a small world. Won't go into details (cause I will be here all day and I am still hungover from the weekend) but even if I wanted to I probably couldn't recall much anyway (isn't that always the way?) BUT I think the open bar and the iron liver had something to do with that... LMAO. They are all amazing individuals though (and THAT'S an understatement!) Very cool story about meeting Matchbox 20. I've heard from other people as well, that the guys in the band are really nice. That's great you got to meet them. Great & refreshing subject to talk about, too. :-) Here's a couple of my stories of people I've met. As some of you know, I used to be in radio up until recently. Over the years, I've met a lot of bands. No big deal, really, but it was a lot of great memories and all. One that sticks out in particular is the time I got to meet and hang out with Marilyn Manson and his band. I know you, you guys are probably saying, "WHAT ARE YOU NUTS??" Well, I must admit, I do like some of his music, so I thought I'd go see one of his shows. So, a couple of friends and me went down to the show and got up front. (We were deaf for at least 3 days after the show) Before the show, I saw one of Marylin's bodyguards that I knew so, he gave us after show passes. So, after the show, (which by the way, totally rocked... :-) we went backstage and hung out with the guys. I was sitting on the couch, talking to Twiggy, Marylin's guitar player, and then enters Marylin. So, he sits down next to me and starts talking to me. I was just dumbfounded. He was a really nice guy, I must say, very intelligent, too. He bought me a few drinks, which I actually lived to tell about... hahaha... Anyway, at one point I keep looking at his eyes... I couldn't help it and then he goes, "What? You see something you like??" Here's me, embarrassed turning beat red, replying back, "Oh, sorry... I was just fascinated by your eyes..." and then he goes, "What? Your eyes aren't really THAT blue, are they?" and my witty remark, "Why, yes they are, thank you!" and the rest is history... :-) I also got to meet Garbage and become friends with them. The first time I met them, I was so nervous. I just LOVE Shirley Manson. She's so beautiful and has an awesome singing voice, so I was just in awe when I was told I could go backstage and meet her and the band. So, here I am standing there and Shirley walks in. She says, "Hello love, how are you?" I just remember saying, "I think you are awesome... I am a huge fan of yours and I'm so nervous..." she starts laughing and goes, "It's okay, love... I don't bite..." and trust me, I haven't heard the end of that one... Well, those are just a few stories... many more, but I won't bore you with them... Those are just some that stick out the most... :-) Take care, Michelle (Dutchie) Michelle McFerran- Staff Assistant direct number: 609-627-2568 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. I said, "oh, I'm just waiting here with my girl." so he said "well, if you have nothing for him to sign, then you need to get out of line and step outside." as I started to argue back, chris looked up and threw me a shirt (a nice, $40 shirt!) and threw the guard a mean look! after that, we saw him in concert several more times, each time he signed the same shirt! the last time I saw him, he had to find room on the short to sign, and as he did so, he wrote, "to my old pal eric" on the back! later that night, we were at the hotel bar when I had to hit the potty. well, guess who walks up to the stall next to me? now Iguess chris and I are pissing buddies! anyhow, he recognised me and we both had coronas at the bar and just chatted. my girl just stood there with her mouth open and couldn't say a word (needless to say, she just loved him!) chris liked to say that he remembered where I lived because he had never seen so many white trash people in one place! haha I also got to meet and eventually befriend a guy named josh clayton, who used to sing for a band called school of fish (they did that song "3 strange days", which was popular in the early 90s). he was a great guy and I have many stories of us talking and hanging out. unfortunately, he passed away last january of testicular cancer. such a shame...he was only 32. check out his site sometime (www.joshclayton.com) and there should be some links to music samples you can hear. lots of his fans are also INXS fans as well, as I believe INXS was an influence on him. he has a new album coming out sometime soon (finished right before he died) and I promise you guys would love it! anyhow, those are my stories! eric reed ===== got milkshake? get to know eric reed at: http://www.members.tripod.com/skippythefrog/skippy.html From: To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Monday, November 27, 2000 1:28 PM Subject: INXS: Re: Meeting A Celebrity I've had the distict pleasure of meeting quite a few celebs, living in L.A. has it's good points afterall. The singer's mother, Patricia Glassop, and half-sister, Tina Hutchence, told a British talk show Monday that they have written a book that will claim Yates drove the pop star into a deep depression. Hutchence, 38, hanged himself in a Sydney hotel room in November 1997. He had been Yates' live-in boyfriend for the previous 2 1/2 years. Yates, 40, was found dead in her London home after an apparent drug overdose in September. Tina Hutchence claimed that Yates - apparently upset at Michael Hutchence's refusal to get married - once threatened to kill herself and their daughter, Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily, now 4. "He became terribly depressed and withdrawn," the singer's half-sister said. "For the last 2 1/2 years of his life, he was a very unhappy person and he got worse and worse."
