I agree - it would be great to see INXS's music feature in commercials but I remember reading AGES ago - possibly around 1987 or 1988 an interview with Michael and he was asked why he refused to promote a soft drink (possibly Pepsi) and he said that he would NEVER promote something he "didn't believe in". Had a nice picture too :) Michael Hutchence The shoking circumstances of Michael Hutchence's death in 1997 can't help but cast a pall over the album that was to be his solo debut, but instead turned into his swan song. For the most part, those poring over his album for signs of the emotional distress that may have led to the singer's demise will instead find a good measure of the sexy swagger that marked his work with INXS and made Hutchence perhaps the last of the old-school rock stars. Though this solo album has little of the aggressive spark of INXS' MTV hits, the music is more forward-looking than his work with the old band, thanks in large part to producers and co-writers Andy Gill (Gang of Four) and Danny Saber (Black Grape). Most impressive are the shimmering, atmospheric ballads "Possibilities" and "All I'm Saying", which show off Hutchence in an unfamiliar, techno-tinged light. But the album ultimately chills the blood by closing with "Slide Away", on which Hutchence repeatedly intones, "I just want to slide away, and come alive again". Even Bono's reassuring verses, inserted after Hutchence's death, are an insufficent balm for the loss of a singer who still had so much left to give. - Daniel Durchholz -- Sue sue@mdc.net http://www.mdc.net/~sue In my cdplayer: Bluebottle Kiss - Tap Dancing On The Titanic From: "Mitch Robertson" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Tuesday, April 04, 2000 7:20 AM Subject: INXS: New Book Hey All, I was jsut searching amazon.com for what else but Michael Hutchence, and I decided I'd check out the books listed on him, even though I have three already (the Lovegrove, Gee and St John ones) but I found a new one up, called: The Covert War Against Rock : What You Don't Know About the Deaths of Jim Morrison, Tupac Shakur, Michael Hutchence, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Phil O Here's the description amazon.com had up on it: Book Description Since the sixties, musicians have been outspoken and powerful proponents for social change, making them a threat to those eager to maintain the status quo. The obituary article did not, however, state that he would not have been able to hang himself. Regardless, the article was, also, very disturbing to me. I sobbed when I read about the condition he was in, as something very terrible happened to Michael, whether self-inflicted or other parties were involved. It's difficult to imagine that someone could beat the crap out of himself that badly, and then hang himself. Especially, when there are bottles of pills and alcohol readily available, if you happen to be suicidal..................I don't know. It is quite bewildering to think about it, so I try to focus on celebrating his life, now. I am not here to judge, but yes, it is very disturbing to think that someone else may have been involved. I don't know all of the facts. No one does, so it'll never be known, for certain, what occurred during that heartbreaking night, other than the world lost an exceptionally bright, gifted, kind, androgenously gorgeous and extraordinary man. A man with a multitude of qualities , yet of course, had human faults...........after all, he was, "just a man," as he sang about himself. All I know is that he, surely, had years of untapped life and pleasures to experience, and much left to give to those he loved, and will be sorely missed by everyone who loved him. But something happenend this week that I must share with all of you. For two years I have been sitting in the halls of my daughter's dance studio chatting with another mother. She and I have talked about our kids mostly. Well this week we started talking about my Michael Hutchence obsesssion. It turns out this chick has been backstage to most of INXS's concerts from 82 through the early 90's. The first time she met the band was when she went to a club in Philly for the Shabooh Shoobah tour. She and her friend were invited back stage after the show. She said Michael was extremely quiet and she took it as aloofness. But that with all she has heard about him since his death she now realises it was shyness. She talked alot with Kirk and Andrew. She said they were really friendly and warm. Anyway, I asked her if she has MH's new album. Her response was I didn't even know he had one. Isn't that pathetic?! Where is all the promotion? It's soo sad. Even in death Michael's talent continues to be underappreciated due to bad management. It's a sad thing when those who are fans of the band don't even know about new projects. Whether they be solo or together as a band. We are extremely fortunate to be online and exposed to so many different countries. And so much information. Shame on V2!!! I say we bombard their web site with mail complaining about the lack of promotion for Michael's album. I realise it is a little late for recognition now. But at least we can get it off of our chests. Thanks for Reading, P.S. I still haven't heard any of Michael's songs here in Philly. By juggling around with the album playlist I found it far more satisfying and it has developed itself to a new plateau. Try playing it is this order. Track 4, 3, 2, 8, 6, 7, 5, 11, 12, 13, & 10. As for tracks 1& 9 I am surprised they saw the light of day and are all surpassed by Let The People Talk which I cannot beleive didn't make it to the album. Try it. It will put the album into a new light. Make It Real In Fuji Color. I think especially, as you say, reality tells us that the market for this album is not going to be what it might have been 10 years ago, or if INXS was at the top of its popularity when Michael passed away. I like the album very much, but I accept the reality that Michael may have had more work to do on this before he would have been completely satisfied with the final product, and I think that the people who managed to put it in its final form did a good job. I am just glad that we have these new songs to listen to and it gives us loyal fans another "new sensation" to appreciate from someone we all love so much. Anyway, I just started looking thru it, and they have a foldout of all of their covers from 1985 to the present. Of course, the pix are very small, but there is one with Michael on the cover, and INXS is the featured main interview/article. But the date is not large enough to read. I would love to see a large version of the picture of Michael, as he is all in black, and it is an "action" shot which is wonderful!!! Also, on the contributing editor page, there are 2 quarter page ads, one for Moby's album called PLAY, and the other is for Michael's solo album. That is good to see!!!! And, on page 100, there is a section called "Quote Unquote." There is a quote from Michael there, which goes like this: "To realize your mortality is interesting, because you really don't think it's there. Especially if you're a rock star.............." MICHAEL HUTCHENCE, INXS, 1989. So, with just a brief glance thru the mag, this is what I found so far. Nice to see Michael mentioned in any way 3 times in one magazine!!!!!!!!! Patricia From: "AnGeL" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Saturday, April 08, 2000 10:22 PM Subject: INXS: Choices READ THIS. LET IT REALLY SINK IN.THEN CHOOSE HOW YOU START YOUR DAY TOMORROW. Michael is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say: When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, "if I were any better, I would be twins!" He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Michael was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation. Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Michael and asked him, "I don't get it! You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?" Michael replied, "Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood. I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life.I choose the positive side of life. "Yeah, right, it's not that easy," I protested. "Yes, it is," Michael said. "Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood. You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live life." I reflected on what Michael said. Soon thereafter, I left the company to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it. Several years later, I heard that Michael was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower. After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, Michael was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back. I saw Michael about six months after the accident. When I asked him how he was, he replied. "If I were any better, I'd be twins. Wanna see my scars?" I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place. "The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon to be born daughter, " Michael replied. "Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or I could choose to die. I chose to live." "Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?" I asked. Michael continued, "...the paramedics were great. They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read "he's a dead man. I knew I needed to take action." "What did you do?" I asked. "Well there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me,"said Michael. "She asked if I was allergic to anything. "Yes, I replied." The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, "Gravity." Over their laughter, I told them, "I am choosing to live. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead." Michael lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude. I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully. Attitude, after all, is everything. "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday. You have two choices now: 1. Delete this. 2. Forward it to the people you care about. I hope you will choose #2. I did. ______________________________________________ *Peace, love, and rock 'n' roll*--60s *Fun, rock, and bad hairdos*--80s From: "Amy Lynne" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Sunday, April 09, 2000 8:46 PM Subject: INXS: Quilts Hi all, I'm looking for one of our 'quiltmasters'...Becky Fischer. An interesting article from a reporter who was on the scene shortly after Michael's body was discovered and he seems to suggest a slightly different take on events - other than suicide. Another question I have is why did Kym Wilson do a runner when the news was announced instead of sticking around to assist police? I don't think I will understand that one. From articles read it appears that she didn't even try to contact Michael's family after hearing the news!! Unanswered questions will remain. The way I heard it, his tackle actually got sliced off after getting entangled with some fishing wire and had to be surgically reattached. Well, it was bad, but not that bad. The whole episode, though, certainly offers a sturdy lesson in the wisdom of wearing clothes when in close proximity to taut wire, sharp knives and big fish. While cutting into his latest catch on said nudie fishing trip in Australia, 1994, the INXS saxophonist's knife slipped and the blade sliced into his exposed member. It didn't cut right through, however, and despite the abundance of blood no major surgery was needed and no lasting damage was done. The new INXS fan site will be run jointly by webmasters Neil Kothari and Mario Ferrari under the existing moniker of "An Excess of INXS" at http://inxsweb.com. The internet has exploded in popularity and growth over the past few years. It is nearly impossible in this day and age for a well-run site to be managed by just one person, especially when that individual has many other commitments. In creating this alliance, it is the hope that the new website will be able to more effectively serve its target audience: INXS fans around the world. As fans have come to expect, the new site will continue the winning traditions that made the original sites so successful. Such popular features as the latest INXS news and the most definitive discography in existence will continue, but within a beautiful and attractive new layout and graphic scheme. Other areas of the site will include pictures, biographies, media, tour dates, a chat room and message board, among other planned pages. The new site will launch in the near future (target date May 2000) once appropriate legal permissions and copyright approval have been obtained. Background History: "An Excess of INXS" began in 1993 by Neil Kothari as an offshoot of the INXS Email List. In the last 7 years, it has grown exponentially in content and popularity, and become the INXS site of choice for many INXS fans. The website has been the recipient of numerous awards over the years, and has featured exclusive interviews with Tim Farriss and Kirk Pengilly in the past. "Welcome To Wherever You Are" started in late 1997 by Mario Ferrari to address the dearth of information about INXS in Europe. The first event was a radio interview with Michael Hutchence, kindly provided by a local Swiss radio station, on the occasion of INXS' appearance at the St. Gallen Festival. In November 1998 the site became the official webpage for Michael's memorial service with content provided by Kell Hutchence and Dennis Patterson. Mario is also well known for his design and maintenance of the award-winning Michael Hutchence Memorial Site (http://www.michaelhutchence.org), launched in October 1999. Here's the kicker: it's good! It's really good! That, plus it's reviewed by none other than David Fricke, possibly the most respected reviewer Rolling Stone has (at least, he's my own favourite). Fricke has reviewed hundreds of albums over the years; plus, we all know Rolling Stone hasn't always given favourable reviews to past INXS albums. So, it's good to read such a well-written positive piece. FYI: 4 stars equals "excellent", so the album missed the boat by only half a star. The article has an accompanying photo of Michael. Jay -------------------- REVIEW http://www.rollingstone.com/sections/recordings/text/disc_fulrev.asp?afl=&LookUpString=10475&AlbumID=61717 *** 1/2 Michael Hutchence Michael Hutchence V2, 2000 This record arrives heavy with sadness: the recent memory of Michael Hutchence's 1997 suicide; the knowledge that he left this project, his first solo album outside of INXS, unfinished at his death; Bono's eulogistic vocal contribution to "Slide Away." There is also the accidental prophecy of lines like, "Saw a million pieces / Of the shape I'm in / Hanging from a chandelier," compounded by the unintended lie of the song title "Put the Pieces Back Together." Much of the music on this record has a gray chill, as well -- beats that click like heels on a wet sidewalk, doleful strings, reflective electronics. It is as if Hutchence, beset by devils he was unable to exorcise through INXS' funk 'n' pop, set out to write his own epitaph, then could not bear to finish it. But don't get blindsided by hindsight. In life, Hutchence was as serious about his craft as he was intoxicated by rock-star living, and on Michael Hutchence -- co-produced by Andy Gill and Danny Saber -- he set his arena-rock torch singing in a provocative landscape of melancholy-machine music. "Possibilities" is an elegant grenade of self-doubt ("It's so strange / How my life's changed / I know nothing / About the people that I touched"). Hutchence doesn't actually say much lyrically in "All I'm Saying," but the bend and tremor in his voice clearly broadcast a fear of impending loneliness. In the midst of that, upbeat moments like "Get on the Inside" and "A Straight Line" can't help sounding inappropriate. They lack muscular conviction, as well, like INXS without the cocky guitars. Ironically, Michael Hutchence's greatest strength is its bleak honesty; at his best, Hutchence sounds like he is stepping out of routine, not slipping into darkness. But history proved otherwise, and we are left with the last recorded testament of a man who had much he wanted to get out in song -- but ran out of time and strength. What it does is making the songs stored on your HD available for direct download, turning your PC into a "small MP3 server". It is like making a direct connect from your PC to another. You log into a server (there's a lot of them thru the World) and you'll have access to the "library". So, if you have, for example, Soothe Me on your HD and you and me are logged on the same Napster server (yes, we can be logged on different and incommunicable servers at the same time), I can download it to me. The main advantage is that hard-to-find MP3 are now not so hard to find. For Example: I've found songs like Travis' "Why does it always rain on Me" or "We Haven't Turned Around", from Gomez. Or even Never Tear Us Apart accoustic (I don't know when it was recorded, but it's cool!). Making a hard-to-find easier, just depends on someone store it on its HD and to run Napster. Hope it helps! So, I have FIANLLY had the time to type up the final list and put it on my page for all to see if they were curious...I especially thought those who voted would want to see where their votes ended up...The link to the list has been added to the bottom of the main Party Page: http://kriswithak.tripod.com/j2kpartynyc.html ENJOY :o) ...Kris (with a K) From: To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Saturday, April 22, 2000 1:22 AM Subject: INXS: INXS on Martin Short show??? My name's Nastassia. I'm 17 and I live in Maine. I've been an INXS fan for about four years. I'm a total lurker on most of my lists, but I'm trying to break that habit! I just wanted to tell everyone about the wonderful surprise I had in Wilson's today. I was wandering aimlessly through the mall (what else is there to do on a rainy Saturday in Maine?) and on impulse I went into Wilson's. I was looking through the sale rack for a few minutes and then I heard Michael's voice blaring through the store's speakers. It was "Baby It's Alright." I got this huge grin on my face, and noticing my mother's extreme confusion at my sudden change of mood, started saying "It's Michael!" Radio stations up here _never_ play Michael's new album and hardly ever play INXS, so needless to say, I was giddy! Hope you enjoyed my extremelyu long ramble! J Love and Peace Forever, Michelle "Celebration of Michael" With abundance of talent and ability, he changed the world for you and me. His charisma caused such captivation, and gave us all a "new sensation." An Aussie accent, so divine, with richness to his voice, so fine. Performing for his fans world-wide, each wishing they were by his side. He gave much more than he ever took. We, so fortunate, to have a look, into the life of one so rare. His end was surely far from fair. He shared his beauty with us all, and hid the pain behind a wall. A brilliant mind, I've heard it told. He, also, had a heart of gold. He felt he was only "just a man." He was much more than that to every fan! How I wish I could have been his friend. God, I wish I could have stopped the end! But, a part of Michael's left here on earth, to which no one can ever put a worth. A little Tiger, to keep him alive. We know part of him will always survive. We "need you tonight," and wish you were here. Our hearts will always hold you near, in a place where you'll always be safe and free....... that place is called the memory. One of the more memorable things he said about Michael was, Richard felt Michael Hutchence was one person he would gladly have traded places with back in those days. "He had everything, good looks, talent, the rock star life and so much charisma that if he walked into a room and took your girlfriend away from you and had sex with her, you almost wouldn't mind because that's Michael, it's cool"...I'm not sure Richard Blade completely believed this concept but it was pretty funny the way he said it. I've always felt the same way and could not figure out for the life of me why INXS only got one piddly little song during the reruns when both songs are so much better than a lot of the music seen on SNL re-reuns. INXS are currently touring on the Tim Rice music spectacular alongside Anthony Warlow, Kate Ceberano, Bachelor Girl and David Essex - but Beers emphasises this doesn't mark a full time return for the band. Besides, Beers says he owes Rice any way: a big fan of the 1970 "Jesus Christ Superstar" album with Murray Head and Ian Gillan, he admits that many of his INXS bass runs came from that record. -- Sue sue@mdc.net http://www.mdc.net/~sue In my cdplayer: Ladies and Gentlemen...The Gentlemen From: "Sue" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Sunday, April 30, 2000 4:51 PM Subject: INXS: Re: INXS on SNL > Man, do I agree with you there. It's nice to see that kind! Reviews It's usually hard to avoid words like "tragic" when talking about INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, who hung himself under mysterious circumstances in 1997 -- but such terms don't apply to the music he was working on at the time of his shadowy death. A collection of solo music he'd been writing since 1995 (with production completed by Gang of Four leader Andy Gill and the Black Grape's Danny Saber), the disc conveys no hint of a downtrodden nature. Rather, Hutchence seems bent on proving he can make it funky without his bandmates -- something he manages quite successfully (with a little help from Clash-master Joe Strummer) on "Let Me Show You." That relaxed, sly attitude stays in place even when the musical intensity is turned down to a slow simmer, as on "She Flirts for England." Yes, there are moments (notably the Bono-accompanied "Slide Away") when Hutchence's lyrical bent gives pause, but the majority of the album's 13 songs celebrate life. INXS diehards should be forewarned that little of that band's hard-rock kick will be found in these grooves -- but those drawn more to the soulful swagger that bubbled under their songs won't be disappointed. David Sprague Whether his name is enough to sell the posthumous solo debut of former INXS leader Michael Hutchence is a question that should be easy to answer. The magnetism that made him one of the most dynamic singers of the '80s is still evident here, but what's not clear is whether or not there's a hit as charged as, say, INXS' "New Sensation" -- particularly considering Hutchence is an old sensation within the time frame of the album's release date -- at a time when this year's model became this moment's thrill. Nevertheless, there is enough good material here to warrant a listen, perhaps even shed a tear. More than two years after Hutchence hung himself in a sexually fraught suicide comes the debut of one of the most erotic, exciting singers of the '80s. Produced by Gang of Four leader Andy Gill (Hutchence was enthralled by that group's guitar sound), and refined by Black Grape's Danny Saber, this curious, occasionally exciting collection showcases the more vulnerable side of Hutchence, best-known for such defiant, proud rock tunes as "The One Thing," "What You Need," and "New Sensation." Songs such as the soul-tinged "Get on the Inside" and the edgy, hard-rocking "A Straight Line" contrast with the cool, paradoxically self-revealing "All I'm Saying" the oddly metered "Don't Save Me From Myself," and the spectral, beautiful "Strip Away." Such lyrical coexistence suggests Hutchence was far from being a spent force, even as it indicates the kind of demons that had been dogging him. Studded with guest appearances from the likes of Bono (whose vocals dubbed over those of Hutchence "complete" the eerily prescient "Slide Away") and various high-end session people, this autobiographical album resonates beyond its sad, faintly kinky pedigree. Crafted from a collection the artist had been working on since 1995, it's an assured, polished release. Apparently, Hutchence had been working on it even as INXS was crafting their swan song, the underrated (and beautifully titled) 1997 album Elegantly Wasted. One wonders what the demos were like; the power shines through despite the polish which Gill and Saber had two years to apply. Given the public's ghoulish appetite for celebrity, it wouldn't be surprising if those demos, along with the interim tracks that Gill and Saber worked over, turned up in a bootleg. ~ Carlo Wolff, All Music Guide Michelle
