I think that is just a true shame, and quite a travesty for a passionate, generous man, who worked so very hard to put his heart into this album. Not only is it an awesome song, because Michael Hutchence sings on it, but we get a double delight to have Bono on it with him! My 14 year old daughter loves the song, and believe me........she is not a lover of my kind of music. My 10 year old son loves the song. This song reaches into the emotions of vast age spans. I really think you should reconsider helping out on making this one a great last chance for Michael! Michelle, I applaud your efforts to contact radio stations to play Michael's music. It'll be interesting to see just how far this campaign will go! However, if the album does become successful, I guess we'll never know what made it get there, whether it was the fans' efforts or by its own merits. And we'd all agree that those songs are strong enough to stand on their own! It can't hurt, though, to give those stations a little nudge! Funny, because I'm currently reading an old Star Trek book (about the original series with Shatner, Nimoy, etc), and have just read a chapter explaining how just one woman was able to save the show from being canceled by NBC in its third season. This woman was the head of a fan club, and published a small magazine which had a circulation of 800 fans. When she heard the news that Star Trek was not being picked up for a third season, she immediately wrote an intelligent letter to the network, explaining why they should not cancel the show. She knew that an intelligent letter would go a long way, and sent out a flyer to each of her subscribers, asking that they help in the campaign. She figured that if each of those 800 people could get 10 people to write a letter, then 8000 responses would surely get NBC to reconsider. One of the key elements in her flyer, besides requesting they write an intelligent and nonthreatening letter, was to be individualistic. The network would not respond well to mail that all said the same thing over and over ("copying and pasting", in today's world!). Reading each person's individual feelings would go a long way in showing how this show touched people. In addition, she asked that each letter NOT mention anything about Star Trek on the front of the envelope addressed to NBC. That way, they'll never know what's inside, and would have to open and read EACH letter, instead of tossing it into a pile, where it would probably go untouched. To make a long story short (sorry that it's still pretty long!), that one fan's campaign resulted in NBC receiving over ONE MILLION pieces of mail requesting the show be kept on the air! An NBC executive had to contact the show's creator, Gene Roddenbury, pleading with him to "TURN THEM OFF!!!!". NBC had to actually hire people just to open all the mail. They couldn't afford to not open anything, since they had no way of knowing what the contents were! This executive admitted that only one hundred and fifty-thousand letters would have done it, but 1,000,000 letters persuaded them to pick up the show for its third season. So, it is possible. I know, it's not the late 60's, it's the late 199.....no wait, the 2000s!!!, but I believe this can work. Let's spread the word and have some fun! Hi! The song is called "Michael, You've Got A Lot to Answer For." It's a tribute...that was done before his death. It appears on Duran Duran's 1997 album "Medazzaland" which was released in October 1997 just before Michael's death. It's a song that Simon Le Bon wrote about his good friend Michael hoping that Michael would get through all the chaos in his life. Simon & his wife Yasmin have always been friends with all parties involved in the Michael chaos-Michael, Paula, Helena, Bob. Simon was very good friends with Michael and they had started performing that song on tour during 1997 up until Michael's death in Nov. 1997. If you want a proper recording of it, please pick up that CD or I would be happy to tape it for you. ~Cindy --- naseem akhtar wrote: > > > Hi everyone > > I was wondering if anyone can help me on this > one....I recently heard a song > which included the lyrics: > > michael you've got a lot to answer for........ > trust you to get caught up in somebody's > war......... > you'll come out of it in time I'm sure........... > just remember what friends are for......... > > This song was added onto the end of an INXS bootleg > gig but no one knows the > origins of it but I'm pretty sure it's a tribute > song to Michael as it is > very moving. > > Does anyone know who it's by and whether it is a > tribute to Michael? > > Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!! > > Nas From: To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Monday, March 06, 2000 4:28 PM Subject: INXS: Re: tribute song for Hutch? The song...Michael You've Got A Lot To Answer For is by Duran Duran and is on their Medazzaland album. It WAS written for Michael, but before he died. Here is an excerpt of an interview with Simon Le Bon from Vox Magazine, March 1998 in which Simon talks a little about Michael. This is kind of long but, I think, it's worth reading. ....Of all the band's celebrity mates, the name most conspicuous by it's absence is that of Michael Hutchence. It's a scarce few days since his body was discovered in a Sydney hotel room. He and Le Bon were longtime drinking buddies and fellow hellraisers. On the new album there's a song called 'Michael, You've Got A Lot To Answer For', recorded before Hutchence's death, and, despite the accusatory tone of the title, it's a fond tribute to the pair's many nights on the tiles together. "He was tremendous fun, a lovely, gentle man, but he had this way of just getting you into trouble," says Le Bon. "I'd go out with him and he had this way of making the maddest things happen. I won't play that song any more live. I doubt we ever will." The news arrived two-thirds of the way through Duran Duran's American tour, and the topic is the only thing that seems to unsettle Le Bon at all. Asking about it is like suddenly slapping a happy child. He looks nervous and appalled. "I knew he had problems with the kids. I knew he had problems with Bob (Geldof). But it never occurred to me he would take his own life. He just didn't seem the type. Now, I guess I know there is no such thing as a type. I suppose the thing that really hurts is that you believe you know someone so well, you believe that they will turn to you if they need help. But people have these secret lives, these inner lives that aren't outwardly visible even to their nearest and dearest. I still haven't spoken to Paula (Yates) about it. I have tried but obviously she's very busy". He shakes his head. "There's a line in the song that asks him to ring me if he's ever in trouble. Princess Diana as well. I didn't know her well, but I did know her. Her death really staggered me. It makes you realise how fragile things are". I hope that answers your question. Hi everyone........there are still Michael Hutchence fans out there, right? I'm still looking for those local rock radio stations names and URL addresses, so we can all send requests to them for Michael's CD to be played. Right now, I think the best song choice, to get the foot in the door, would be "Slide Away" or "Straight Line," since they are showing the video on VH1. Let's just request both, or either, when we bombard them with requests. If you all would like to send those stations names or URL addresses directly to me, I could compile lists. Then, there wouldn't be tons of "one-liners" on the list. This would help everyone who hates the "one-liners" and people who have to pay to receive every piece of e-mail they get. Please, help this effort to force the stations to give Michael the air time he needs for this CD to be successful, as he obviously can't tour to promote it. It definitely needs "air time," or the general public will be oblivious to it's presence. I'm getting turned down the second I say "Michael Hutchence"-it's pretty pathetic! We have "Classic Alternative", "Classic Rock", heavy metal, two or three lite pop stations, and the top-40 station. I can't get anybody interested!!At least,m on the FM band--the college station is AM, but they are the *least* formatted station, so I will give them a call. I am also going to try the non-commercial stations this week--one of them has a *funky* theme, so maybe I can get them interested in "Get on the Inside". What has to happen is that the members of the list all have to band together, and we all have to start sending e-mails to every radio station URL address that is posted. Don't put a subject in the "subject" line, then they will have to read it to see what the e-mail is in regards to. If we all have a letter that we can copy and paste, and send to each e-mail address or URL address, it just may work. The stations don't know where the requests are coming from.....they have to assume the requests are all locals, and they are all from a different name, so they can see it isn't just a handful of people requesting the songs. This is the only way this will possibly work. If people don't respond to me, though, it isn't going to work. And, if they don't follow through it isn't going to work. I will send e-mails to the station names everyone provides to me, as I have access to 6 screen names I can use to send the e-mails under. I'll have to write 6 different letters, though. Obviously can't send the same letter under 6 different names-that would be a little obvious. If we all do this same thing, we may be able to force "air time," due to "popular demand," so to speak. We all love to hear INXS on the radio. I'm sure we'd all love to hear Michael solo on there, too. Hey, it's worth a try. All it will take is a little of our time and effort. And , if it works, it'll all be worth it. If it doesn't,......... well, no one can say all the fans didn't rally together and try to do all they could to help promote this CD! While I can understand your passion for Mr. Hutchence and his music, yours is the one and only request I've had for the song. Yes, 91X does play new music. Not everything that comes into the building though. My job is to play the music within our designated format that the masses want to hear. The masses haven't cared about INXS in quite some time. I don't have any control over that. I receive about 6 to 10 releases a day from people who have put there heart into their work. I can't even come close to playing it all. If I were to do so I'd have no listeners. It's sad but true. We listened to the Michael Hutchence CD when it was sent to us and decided (over a period of time) that it wasn't the right fit when compared to the other product available. I'm just doing my job. Once again, I'm sorry that this particular record didn't make it's way onto our airwaves...but the same can be said for 98% of the alternative rock radio station's in the country in regard to "Slide Away". INXS was created from divergent influences both in attitude and style. Andrew, Michael et al. all seemed to want to appear as avoiding the well worn paths of music........they never wanted to be told they sounded like ".." (whoever). Throughout the length of the individual albums you can see how experiments and ideas recurred in subtle reformations.....the only thing that was ever truly consistent was the energy level that was thrown upon the listener......(it helps having 6 members). With the Kick album you see a band who realised they had the skills and image to really shift some units....a chunk of funk some r&b and some real old fashioned chair dancing rock. Of course lets not forget the pop influence that teeters around the edge of Kick, "popping" it's head out now and then almost quietly wishing itself unmasked. On X, there were a few recurring themes that I have mentioned before, one I found personally a little annoying which was that the songs all seemed to stop in the middle and start again..............IE they built and built then held for 30 seconds then slowly build again to a "crescendo finish". Thick with the muted (or quiet) guitar and almost floral synth treatments.....and the new instrument a harmonica thrown in for good measure.......full of non complex bass lines and hooks that wrapped around the bars.......and that dancey drum beat that INXS have always envoked from their disco roots of the 70's. The standout experiment track was Suicide Blonde.....the first single........the band and producer Chris Thomas were eager to impress after Kick And the 'wall of sound' that X was, is best exemplified by this song. In between you had Shining Star, where a decision seems to have been made that INXS would become more percussive, this was to become the starting point for Welcome, a hybrid album with percussion and bass being the primary focusses. An album of "tiny' melodies, it was one of INXS' finest moments creatively, perhaps belittled by it's meagre sales figures.....(2 million). More instruments were used on this album then any other.......however the sounds were quite simple in most parts. And you actually find some rap music on it LOL. Full Moon was an album that had a very heavy hard rock influence, a dirtier sound was looked for, something not as clean as there previous albums. In affect a real "Noise Feast". INXS were attempting to remain a marketable item with the attitude of grunge without the same "creativity". So although the sound was rawer it was still a polished diatonic beast, with those funky influences still resonating through a rock surge. In Kill the Pain you almost see the absense of drums for once, and Viking Juice, I'm Only Looking. It however failed to throw itself above the past glories of Kick and X....which had a greater pop influence. The Gift was a brilliant piece of work but was obnoxious to the the ear of the people who make platinum records. Lack of interest in the single threw the rest of Full Moon into the dark, which is roughly what the album was. Elegantly Wasted, this saw Andrew throwing unusual chords (particulary E against E4 etc).... (in some cases soft dissonant Indian influences) together and synthetic or acoustic "double" bass lines. It had the rawness of Full Moon but also had a more poppier culture, INXS again announced themselves very loudly with the first single.....and the third for that matter. However you see the acoustic guitars come out of there cases and electric guitars attached to foot pedals with various synthetics used It was an attempt to reenthuse the old fans with some poppy singles cleaner then the previous album, and on the other hand throw some things out that hadn't been heard from INXS.....some of those closet influences. Also something they knew would kick ass live, because as opposed to the two previous INXS albums...they were always going to tour on this album. I emailed them last night and got this response today: Hi Amy, Thanks for your thoughts about Michael Hutchence. I agree that it's an incredible CD, and I appreciate the songs you suggested. I actually ran into him at a club in New York not long before he died. He seemed really cool, and when he died I couldn't believe it, because he seemed to be in a really creative, productive phase. People should definitely hear this music on the air, and we'll see what we can do to get some of it played. Thanks for being with us, Greg Husak Let's hope it gets some air play. Below is an email I replied to The Merge regarding a Merge Mail News/Concert update I had received. I couldn't resist taking advantage of that moment to comment on Michaels CD. Following my email is the response I received from the Program Director. This was all "before" Michaels CD had been released. _____________________________________________________ I am sooooooo impressed and excited about you guys sharing Michaels new solo CD before it's official release with the DFW area !! I belong to the INXS list and I have read many disappointing emails with regards to no airplay across the nation. We all want so much for his CD to be shared with the world. I really do hope all of you guys @ the Merge keep plugging on Michaels new solo CD. I hope Slide Away is doing well on the request line and I really hope it makes a big splash on the Billboard charts after the release. I love all of the album and hope you guys will continue to play other songs off the CD as well !!! I usually listen to CD's in my car - especially the new MH solo CD, but I really do love the Merge and wish I could pick you guys up on my radio at work !!! I'm not defending this guy's position on behalf of his station, but I wanted to point something out. I don't know how it is around the country, but I have notice a trend in regards to radio stations, particularly in the Southeast. There are two types and you can tell them by their call letters. One is the "X" type, like 91x, 107.7x, etc. They usually play pretty much hard core alternative music, which INXS and MH are not. (Although there are a few who play a variety of stuff) The other type is a "Mix" station, like Mix 94.5, Mix95, etc. They play a wide variety of things, and not just top 40. In fact, they usually have part of one day or even a whole day devoted to 80's music. After all, this Down Under version of Mick Jagger appeared to live an enviable rock-star life, despite a well publicized custody fight involving his live-in girlfriend Paula Yates and her ex-husband Bob Geldof. And INXS's slick dance music gave little evidence of a darker side . Hello to all, As promised, I finally managed to get my review and comment on Michael's new release completed and posted on Listen.com. It was difficult as I had to keep it to a minimum of 200 words......(not easy for me, when it comes to INXS or Michael) Here it is: After listening to this new release, extensively, I can honestly say, initially, it seemed an unexpected difference than the Michael Hutchence we were used to hearing with INXS. However; that's the entire point of a "SOLO" album, correct? I've decided, although, much of the music shows Michael's darker side, it has a QUALITY of many different sounds encorporated into the songs. It contains funk, bluesy-type, rock, synthesized punky-hip hop, Hutchence-style alternative-one which no one has ever come close to, nor ever will. This man was an extremely multi-talented individual, unique, highly intelligent, kind, sensitive, generous and, yes, had his faults, who in his own words describes himself as "just a man." He is sorely missed by multitudes of the populace. His means of death has never been founded, as a certainty & not to be judged by man, as no one should be. When "we" are PERFECT, in our own right, perhaps, we may then judge. Until then, I will only give my opinion on his accomplishments during his LIFE, & as we all are aware, they were many! How fortunate for this world that we were able to experience and share some of them! If you all would be interested they have many free downloads available on this site, (i.e.- Let the People Talk, Standing on the Rooftop, Slide Away). You may, also, join Listen.com for free and be able to vote on Michael's CD quality and leave your own comments. Here ids the URL address for that page: http://www.listen.com/makecomment.jsp To be able to join so you can vote, just go to www.listen.com, join, and them go to the URL address I've provided. Although, part of the critique was OK, there are parts where these pukey critics just HAVE to get some kind of crappy jabs in..........I believe it may be due to the male jealousy thing that festers in some men, as all the negative critiques have been from males, (I am not including all men in this, so no one be offended, please). Or maybe it's just complete stupidity and lack of having any kind of a decent heart dwelling within, at all. Anyway, here's my response: This is a letter directed to Alec Foege............ First of all, I hate to inform Mr. Foege, but any Michael Hutchence fan would tell him that his critique of the new release isn't quite accurate. The album really does make quite a statement to the public......one which is clearly defined, and certainly not lackluster. in fact it is extremely colorful, although showing a rather darker side of Mr. Hutchence. And, how he could he even presume to think he can tell the populace that there is not GENUINE EMOTION on this album, is absolutely LUDICRIOUS. This entire album is completely ABOUT emotion!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe he needs to listen to the CD until he truly understands the songs, their meaning and the emotions that are conveyed, very clearly, by Michael Hutchence. There is no "predictability" to this CD. It was not what was expected at all, as it sounds nothing like the music created by Michael Hutchence with INXS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Last of, Michael Hutchence does not HAVE to "take a stab" at posthumous immortality, as he achieved immortality BEFORE he ever left this world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sincerely, Michelle Steil Cedar Rapids, IA. And, for those of you out there who would like to read something positive for a change, I finally found a couple of people who actually have an ability to see some positivity in someone's hard work and don't feel the need to tear another's uniqueness and creativity to shreds: Throughout his artistic life, Michael Hutchence served two masters, sexuality and intellect. While onstage, he could alternate between tortured poet and catwalk vixen at the drop of a dime, but in the studio his extremes were often clouded by the democracy of INXS. On this posthumous self-titled release, Hutchence lets his demons run wild and frames them together for the first time. More often than not, he comes up a winner. Hutchence eloquently pinpoints this predicament on the album's opener "Let Me Show You," ("I'm black and blue from love and art"), showing that he isn't interested in painting himself in a favorable light, or whitewashing the truth. This message is driven home on "Flesh and Blood," when he sings, "Strip away the bones and skin looking for what lies within." Musically, the album is funky and textured. Distorted guitars, brass sections, chorus singers and electronic swirls help to fill out the scenery, but it's always Hutchence's Jagger-esque bark that takes the stage. Bono brings the album in for a safe landing on, "Slide Away." And as the U2 vocalist sings "I'd catch you if I heard your call. But you tore a hole in space. Like a dark star falls from grace," what started out as a collaboration between two superstars ends up a eulogy, a sad reminder that the album was pieced together after Hutchence's death. Tabloid gossip aside, Hutchence will most likely be remembered for his work with INXS. Given their 20-year trajectory, that's as it should be. But this album shows the singer as his own man, away from the group personality. ~ Levi Nuñez, CheckOut.com Whether his name is enough to sell the posthumous solo debut of former INXS leader Michael Hutchence is a question that should be easy to answer. The magnetism that made him one of the most dynamic singers of the '80s is still evident here, but what's not clear is whether or not there's a hit as charged as, say, INXS' "New Sensation" -- particularly considering Hutchence is an old sensation within the time frame of the album's release date -- at a time when this year's model became this moment's thrill. Nevertheless, there is enough good material here to warrant a listen, perhaps even shed a tear. More than two years after Hutchence hung himself in a sexually fraught suicide comes the debut of one of the most erotic, exciting singers of the '80s. Produced by Gang of Four leader Andy Gill (Hutchence was enthralled by that group's guitar sound), and refined by Black Grape's Danny Saber, this curious, occasionally exciting collection showcases the more vulnerable side of Hutchence, best-known for such defiant, proud rock tunes as "The One Thing," "What You Need," and "New Sensation." Songs such as the soul-tinged "Get on the Inside" and the edgy, hard-rocking "A Straight Line" contrast with the cool, paradoxically self-revealing "All I'm Saying" the oddly metered "Don't Save Me From Myself," and the spectral, beautiful "Strip Away." Such lyrical coexistence suggests Hutchence was far from being a spent force, even as it indicates the kind of demons that had been dogging him. Studded with guest appearances from the likes of Bono (whose vocals dubbed over those of Hutchence "complete" the eerily prescient "Slide Away") and various high-end session people, this autobiographical album resonates beyond its sad, faintly kinky pedigree. Crafted from a collection the artist had been working on since 1995, it's an assured, polished release. Apparently, Hutchence had been working on it even as INXS was crafting their swan song, the underrated (and beautifully titled) 1997 album Elegantly Wasted. One wonders what the demos were like; the power shines through despite the polish which Gill and Saber had two years to apply. Given the public's ghoulish appetite for celebrity, it wouldn't be surprising if those demos, along with the interim tracks that Gill and Saber worked over, turned up in a bootleg. ~~~~~ Carlo Wolff, All Music Guide From: "Dagette Dillon" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Monday, March 13, 2000 7:13 AM Subject: INXS: Re: e: SOTW#120 - Need You Tonight Hi All, I haven't emailed the list for a while i've just been lurking as the saying goes :O} But i have to say NYT is one of my all time favourite INXS songs I just sit back with my head phones on close my eyes & imagine Michael singing this just for me LOL Well we can all dream can't we?The music is intoxicating & very sexy especially when watching the guys in the video which is very arty my opinion only of course but i love it!!!! I'm finding it interesting that more non-mainstream music magazines have nicer things to say about it than the mainstream magazines. Rooms For The Memory INXS Singer's Solo Album Released Feb. 22 Two years after his death, the V2 label will release the self-titled solo album from former INXS frontman Michael Hutchence. The album's 13 tracks, co-written and recorded with producers Danny Saber (Black Grape) and Andy Gill (Gang of Four), detail a more sophisticated side to the singer. "He knew that in order for him to be as relevant as he had been in the late '80's, INXS had to reinvent themselves," remembers Gill. "But Michael wanted to make a record that would launch a solo career as well as critical discussion." Fans expecting "Need You Tonight"-styled bravura may be shocked to find a more introspective muse at work, especially on the electronic-textured "Breathe," and the stirring closing track. "Slide Away", which Gill completed with vocals recorded prior to the singer's death, and U2 vocalist and longtime Hutchence friend, Bono "I asked him if he wanted to sing on the record in principle," says Gill. "I played him all the tracks I had, and he chose "Slide Away," the song I wanted him to sing on.[That song] was emotionally and psychologically our way of saying goodbye to Michael." -- Sue sue@mdc.net http://www.mdc.net/~sue In my cdplayer: Jawbreaker - Dear You From: "s. schulte" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Wednesday, March 15, 2000 11:39 PM Subject: INXS: Re Canadian Bruce Fairbairn Tribute,INXS mention Hey I got this thru another list.... > Tribute to Fairbairn > By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun > Over his 20-year-plus career, Vancouver producer > Bruce Fairbairn worked > with some of the biggest bands in rock -- Aerosmith, > Bon Jovi, AC/DC, INXS, > KISS, Van Halen, The Cranberries and Yes, along with > Canadian acts Loverboy, > Prism and Honeymoon Suite. > > That musical legacy has led to Fairbairn's > posthumous induction into the > Canadian Music Hall Of Fame during Sunday night's > Juno Awards at SkyDome > (CBC-TV, 8 p.m.). > > Fairbairn, who learned to play the trumpet at age > five and began his > producing duties with '70s band Prism, died suddenly > in his sleep last May > at the age of 49 while producing the latest Yes > album, The Ladder. > > "It's very unusual that we could rally round after > that event and say, > 'Let's get this album finished and dedicate it to > Bruce, because he'd given > us so much, you know?'" said Yes singer Jon Anderson > in an interview with > The Sun in December. > > "He was such a beautiful guy," continued Anderson, > who actually discovered > Fairbairn's body at Fairbairn's Vancouver home. > "It's hard to explain how we > felt about him. The late lead singer of Nirvana, famed for his heroin abuse, gravelly voice and 1994 suicide, has topped a chart composed by Melody Maker magazine of rock and roll hellraisers. The magazine's editor Mark Sutherland, reviewing the list of the bad boys and girls of an industry renowned for excess, said: "Their antics read like a litany of sexual deviance, drug-fuelled escapades, self-abuse and mutilation." Cobain tops the poll ahead of Shaun Ryder of Happy Mondays and the late Keith Moon of The Who. Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, upholds the family honour by taking the number eight slot. The poll certainly highlights what a grim toll living life in the fast lane can take on its stars. Apart from Moon and Cobain, the list also includes the late Australian singer Michael Hutchence in 11th position followed next by the late Jim Morrison of the Doors. British pop rivals Liam Gallagher of Oasis and Robbie Williams come in at fiveand six. The two have long traded insults and last month Williams challenged his singing foe to a boxing match with each of them putting up 100,000 pounds for a televised bout. Sutherland said: "In light of the recent spat between Robbie and Liam, we thought it would be fun to look at the most infamous hellraisers in rock history." Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin surprisingly failed to make the top 20 and some pop pundits would perhaps dispute the low rating of Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards down in seventh place. In the pantheon of "Wild Men", Richards was always top of the pile and those who knew him in his drug-taking, whisky-drinking heyday were amazed he did not join the long list of rock victims. His feuds with Mick Jagger, his love affair with Anita Pallenberg, his fast cars, his violence, his iron constitution and unkempt look gave the "World's Most Elegantly Wasted Human Being" hero status to armies of leather-clad rockers. Richards, whose craggy face mirrors the death head ring he wears on one of hisguitar-playing fingers, told a recent Sheryl Crow pop concert audience: "It's good to be here...but then it is good to be anywhere." This is a little tricky! Question 1: Did you buy the actual (entire) roll of fillm, or just a slide negative from a roll of film? If you do not have the entire roll of film, you have no rights for developing, duplicating..etc. You can do it but you can be open to subject for lawsuit from the one who actually owns the roll of film or the people on the film. Qyestion 2: When you purchased the film/negative, did you sign papers that stated the negative turned over duplication rights as well? Did it come with a cerificate of rights? If no, you do not own the rights to reproduce anything at all from negative or even have it developed for print. To even have it legally developed you need to have sole power of printing laws. (Meaning you took the picture(s) and the people in the picture(s) knew what your purpose of the film was to be and willingly allowed you to photograph them). Even though you did pay for the negative that you own. That's the only right you have is to have it. I wouldn't doubt if what you bought was a collectors' neg. item. Many of slide "dupe" negatives are collected and auctioned everyday. But unless you have papers/certificate of authentic ownership, there's not much legally you can do with it but add it to your own personal collection. Without certificate of ownership (sales receipt doesn't count), you can't even auction it off properly. A "dupe" negative from the orignal negative means you have a copy of the orignal. I could be wrong but chances are the photographer who took the shot/ or WEA, is the one with the orignal negatives/ownership rights. The only thing you can do, is go back to the source of purchase or the photographer and find out if its the orgianal or not. If it is the origanal, inquire about obtaining ownership rights. That's the best way to go doing what you want to do. Ariyonia From: To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Thursday, March 23, 2000 10:24 PM Subject: INXS: INXS on eBay Hello! Well, I've been saving some of the messages from the list from the past few weeks, waiting for a good time to respond to them, so here I go: 1) Has anyone listened to this newly released/old song "Wake Up" yet? I take it it's from circa 1980 or thereabouts? Anyone care to describe how it sounds? With my inferior computer knowledge I haven't really been able to listen to it yet. But I haven't given up trying to hear it, just wondering if anyone has some initial feedback. If it's anything like "Scratch", "Doctor", "Just Keep Walking" or "Jumping", I have a feeling I'm going to love it! When I first heard the title of the song, I couldn't help but think how ironic it was that 20 years later, Bono would dedicate a song titled "Wake Up Dead Man" to Michael. Sort of brings everything about full circle, you know? 2) I am SO happy about this Tim Rice music spectacular. I am a HUGE theatre buff, and consequently I've collected dozens of soundtracks from musicals. In fact, I have taken part/acted in a few musicals myself, including "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", which is a show for which Rice wrote the lyrics and Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music. Be that as it may, my alltime favourite musical for the past 8 years has been "Jesus Christ Superstar", hands down. The more musicals I listen to -- and there ARE a lot of great ones out there -- the more I keep returning to this one. It's absolutely amazing. Of all the plays and musicals I would like to be involved in someday, this is the one that would make my dreams come true. To hear that INXS may be performing 5 selections from it is awesome: my favourite band is performing my favourite musical. Some other interesting tidbits: "Superstar" finally returned to Broadway 5 days ago!!! This is the first time it has been staged on Broadway in almost three decades! On March 23rd, 2000, it premiered with Glenn Carter in the title role. The accompanying video, the first since 1973's Norman Jewison production, will be coming out Easter 2000. I met Ted Neeley, star of the 1973 movie, when he toured Eastern Canada several years ago. He's the best! Anyway, the "Superstar" songs "Everything's Alright", "Superstar", "Heaven on Their Minds", the Overture, and "I Don't Know How To Love Him" (the ones INXS will be performing), are all amazing. All they need to include is "Could We Start Again Please", "Simon Zealotes" and "Gethsemane" and they'll be performing every one of my favourites from the musical. And how about INXS performing "One Night In Bangkok" from "Chess"? That's going to be great! The original song sounds a lot like INXS's sound during the days of "The Swing" and "Listen Like Thieves" (which is coincidentally, approximately the same year "Bangkok" first came out, if memory serves). Lastly, I may have missed this aspect of the Spectacular, but who's singing the songs? On the poster it says Anthony Warlow, Kate Ceberano, Tim Rice, Iva Davies, David Essex, and someone called "Bachelor Girl". Have they announced which of these will be performing with INXS yet? 3) SOTW: "Show Me" - I was one of the ones who thought "Elegantly Wasted" (the album) did no wrong, except possibly for "Everything". The opening track is truly great, in my opinion. 4) If you think this post is long, you should see my list of my favourite albums of the decade. Taking my cue from Neil, I went through all of my music and spent the past three months putting together ten top 10 lists (1 for each year) of my favourite records of the 1990s, with an accompanying paragraph for each choice. Suffice it to say, INXS fared very well in 1990, 1992, 1993, and 1997! Anyone interested in seeing it, drop me a line and I'll e-mail it to you, warts and all. Take care everyone! There has never been another voice (IMHO) with the same spirit and emotion in that role since. Now I will have to get out my tape and watch it tonight!!!!! >Tim Rice, > Iva Davies, David Essex, and someone called "Bachelor Girl". Have they > announced which of these will be performing with INXS yet? About 10 years ago I got a birthday gift of a concert to see Iva Davies/Ice House perform. It was in a venue that holds about 5,000 persons, more like a "musical review" kind of stage. So I ended up being about 3 rows from the front center, and so Iva Davies spent most of his time right in front of us. He was very good, had a touch of David Bowie "theatrical" presence ~~ which I LOVE as Bowie is one of my alltime favorite performers. I can imagine Davies singing with INXS easily. Although, this song really is about something so sad, as Jesse says. Does anyone know exactly who Michael is referring to in this song. Is it actually written about someone he knew, or more of a song that tells a tale? It is a great song, but kind of sad, also, that he wrote, "I tried to tell her, but she had the wildest heart." Michael was sort of like that, too...........he had the wildest heart. Sometimes, I think that wild heart of his lead to his demise. What do you think? Anyway, that's a whole other subject. But, about INXS on commercials I remember seeing the commercials for, I believe it was, one of the theme parks in the USA, and hearing, "New Sensation," in 1998. I was so happy to hear INXS on the TV, knowing that everyone in the USA would be hearing them, too, on the TV! Brought a smile to my face and joy to my heart. Ü Shine like it does........... I just heard the beat and thought it was totally awesome. I remember when I first heard it, I wasn't crazy about it right away, but of course, it worked it's way in. I'm sure there are tons of INXS songs that I have no idea what the true meaning is about-the whole story behind it. Hello! I've never done this before and don't know who I'm writing to, but wanted to all the same. I am obviously a fan of Michael's and have been so taken with his death and captivated by the person. I'm just wanting to perhaps chat about him or else find out some info on possible gatherings etc. Anything you can share would be great. I live in Phoenix, AZ and have found this memorial webpage terrific. I seem to keep visiting it and hoping to learn something more about this person who intrigues me so. What is your favorite song of his/theirs? Do you have Michael's latest CD? I love it. Write back if you would. THanks a bunch. I remember already discussing this song is some detail as it was being kicked and beatin repeatedly in the head LOL. And although the song has an obvious negative repitition thing happening.....that doesn't work for most because it is not escapism _ the positive side of the song is the simple melodics of Michael's voice in the verses against the slighted chord movements. The melancholy character of the song seperates it from previously more positive attitudes that you might find on the Kick album for example. In music, simply put there are really only two types of songs.....there are the songs about living, ... and there are the songs about dying.......this is one about dying. This song seems to have influences from "American" indian rock or "American" indian music (sort of reminds me of some of the music of the Cult as well) and the name Cherry might well be associated with that culture. Either way it's ashame that unlike Need You Tonite and some other INXS songs, this song will barely ever see the light of day in the future history of popular music. Michael Kick Talon .... First of all it would start of in total darkness with only a few shafts of light giving you glimpses of what appears to be the band. This would run over the entire intro to the song (before the vocals cut in). Then as the vocals cut in wham! the camera would cut to a close-up of the band under intense, almost blinding lighting on a stage and "Show me, show me. The camera/s would follow basically an A1 live performance of the band (neatly attired) complete with a lights show, cutting into individual shots of Jon when there's a drum fill, or Tim when there's a guitar solo/chord stroke etc. Of course the main shot would be of most of the band. The only weird thing about the video would be the audience. Here I thought that there would only be one girl, but one girl duplicated as many. This would represent Cherry, the girl Michael was talking about. Thoughout the entire video the images of this girl would remain completely oblivious to the band's performance, they would just simply stare at the band with no emotional output. The girl would be wearing black, black hair and the make up would make her look positively negative (lol). You could achieve the duplication effect using large cut out pictures or, probably better, a large movie screen. I think the multiple imaging goes well for the video seeing as how Michael mentions the name Cherry about umpteen times. And the fact that she is lifeless also goes well with Michael's lyrics, regretablly with point blank literality in the second half of the song. BTW - The first time I heard this song, at the end where he really shoots of a "how", I was muttering expletives to myself cause I had the stereo turned up really """loud""" and that vocal was almost deafening. Man Michael's got a powerful voice. l sue wrote: > In responding to the INXS Song of Week you can give your opinions on the > lyrics and music of the song, its strong or weak points, and/or any > special meaning the song has had at one time, or still holds for you. > > INXS SONG OF THE WEEK #121 - Show Me (Cherry Baby) > > -- > Sue sue@mdc.net > http://www.mdc.net/~sue > In my cdplayer: Dragstrip Courage - Echo Rock > From: "INXSED 2" To: "Multiple recipients of INXS-List" Sent: Friday, March 31, 2000 9:00 PM Subject: INXS: SOTW#121-Show Me (Cherry Baby) I absolutely took a liking to this song immediately after I first heard it... and the album itself. I recall the first time I bought the CD and it was summer of 97, I believe? I listened to it all of the time.. but after Michael's death that year I had a very hard time pulling out the album again because it was their last CD and I had such high hopes of finally seeing them in concert for this show. Hmph. But the song Show Me is fabulous!! It really rocks and I always wished they would make a video for it! I like the "we took a coffee, you took it so strong... shaded from the neon, I can still see your eyes." Very interesting lyrics. Upbeat music. Different. And Michael just drawwwwwwwwwwwls with sexiness when he says Oh Cherry Oh Cherry baaabaaay!
