I have not responded to any of you because 1) I've been ill & 2) when I could look there was a debate going on about PAL & VHS & whatnot. I haven't a clue (nor do I really want to have one) what all this is about. I'm looking only for the bottom line because in my weakened condition that's all I can handle right now: Bottom line: Has someone made arrangements to do whatever has to be done to deliver Denton stateside and elsewhere? If so, please fill me in on these arrangements and to whom I must apply for a copy. I'm sure my confusion is due soley to the fact that I am convalescing, tho I wouldn't be surprised if others out there are too. And yes, I have been an INXSer for about 10 years at least. Have managed to see them in concert 3 times so far. Last tour that breezed thru this state was their Full Moon, Dirty Hearts tour. Got a chance to be real up close and get a chance to watch the band real good. It was a very enjoyable concert, except for being so close to other people who were sweating something fierce. My favorite concert was the one for X. The best sounding that I've been to in the 3 shows I've seen so far. It was held at an outdoor area that made the entire show awesome. But, hate to be a traitor, I am a full fledged Floydian. *Nobody* puts on a show quite the way Floyd does it. I do have the entire INXS collection (not bootlegs) and do enjoy digging them out once in a while to rock out XSively. Nice to meet you all by the way. Even though I grew up and got hooked on INXS during the KICK and X period, I have to say that the stuff they did before and after these two albums are very original. The Swing is such a great album, and songs like "To Look At You", "Spy of Love" from SS really are gems. WTWYA is also a great sound, and I have to agree with most people that INXS was heading in the right direction and stumbled a bit with FMDH (although The Gift and The Messenger have some killer riffs..) If the next album sounds like Kick, that would be fine, but I think INXS has always been developing and growing and every album has a different sound and the same sounds, all at once. (is this making sense?) INXS just has something that not too many bands out there in any era has had, whether it be consistent originality, eclectic sounds, or what have you. charlie From johnv@red.ariel.cs.yorku.caTue Nov 7 20:45:18 1995 Date: Tue, 7 Nov 1995 20:07:15 -0500 (EST) From: John Vink To: INXS Mailing List Subject: Listen Like Thieves Speaking of covers, has anyone else heard the cover of "Listen Like Thieves" by Was (Not Was)? This reminded me of a fun thing we did... My freshman year at college, my university had all the freshmen divided into groups of 15-25 people during Orientation week for tours, barbecues, fun new student activities, etc. We were group #88. Well, for the big spirit rally/commencement/huge assembling of freshmen thing each group made a sign out of that huge butcher paper stuff--you know, it comes on those big rolls and is so handy for posters. ANYWAY, we put a big 88 in the middle, but then my brilliant group leaders had a suggestion to write words ending in the sound "eight" all over the poster. :) :) :) I happily began painting and drawing the words. So what is the meaning behind the cover of the "Not Enough Time" single? The picture has a married couple in the front of it, with the groom standing behind his seated wife while she holds a baby. Is there an obvious significance or reference that is eluding me, or is it just a random picture taken from the trash at the printers? Secondly, and this is probably a really, really stupid question, is Michaels hair naturally curly or permed? Now before you all die laughing, the reason I ask is that on the interview segments of INXS Greatest Video Hits (1980-1990) his hair is straight. Most likely he put the effort into making it straight for that one occasion and not in keeping it curly for all those years. Finally, and least significantly, is there any way to get a copy of the video to Shining Star? It wasnt on the Greatest Video Hits or the Greatest Video Experience. I can't agree with the comment about Michael not aging well! He looks pretty good from where I'm sitting! I don't really care for his hair being black and I think it makes him look older and harder than he really is. Just because Paula's hair is some hideously unnatural shade doesn't mean his needs to be. I guess its just a reactionary thing from all the press. He may hate to be thought of as just a cute guy with great hair but if the sales match the length of his hair---be better start growing it back! (a friend of mine has a really funny theory on album sales=hair style) Just for the record, I think his hair is probably permed. I have the feeling its naturally wavy anyway, but to give it the overall look and allow him not to mess with it a lot, he probably perms it. I thought he looked great with straight hair though. Never saw any pix of him like that until the video. Notice how the lighter color is ok but the latest shade of black is scary? Oh well, it won't last forever. The picture has a married couple in the front of it, with the groom standing behind his seated wife while she holds a baby. Is there an obvious significance or reference that is eluding me, or is it just a random picture taken from the trash at the printers?" I have some conjectures as to what the significance of the picture is. Here in the U.S. Kirk and Tim did an interview on Modern Rock Live before Welcome To Wherever You Are was released. In the interview Tim said they had collected many "real life photos of different people in odd situations, and each one captured a truism." It sounded like they were going to use them for an album cover, but as Tim said, "They went cold on the idea." (I've got the interview taped, so that's how I remember so good) So my feeling is that they had many photos left over from this idea and decided to use them for their singles and mixes. The picture on Not Enough Time seems to be an "odd situation that captures a truism", so perhaps that's where they got the idea from. At the same time I could be totally wrong, perhaps someone else has a better answer. By the way, what's everyone's favorite INXS song, and why? Well, from the album visual, I thought that the video for FMDH was brilliant. It really fit the mood of the song. If they do story type of videos, I say keep the band out of it. I like how FMDH was treated maturely and not turned into, say, Aerosmith's crazy or whatever ("let's show this hot chick on a bike inbetween shots of shirtless band members!") But I really loved Not Enough Time and Baby Don't Cry. It has nothing to do with the song, really, but damn it looks great. Plus on Baby Don't Cry, they look like they're having so much fun-at least Michael prancing around and jumping on everything. Never Tear Us Apart fits into this catagory, I think. As long as it fits the mood of the song. For the ballads, I think subtle imagery works best-like U2's With Or Without You. It's simple, yet it fits the song. I thought the Strangest Party video was good, but what was with the kickboxing lady? If it's really way out there, it shouldn't put it in. I agree that Beautiful Girl had a nice message, but you're not gonna get airplay doing that, and that's what you need to sell albums. I hope there are no more videos like Bitter Tears or New Sensation where it's just the band playing (Guns in the Sky is probably one of the dumbest videos I've seen. And what the hell is Jon doing there, just dancing?) Except for Heaven Sent, which I thought the quick cuts and in-your-face camera work caught the feel of the song. And we definently don't need the guns'n'roses/bon jovi thing, playing guitar on a mountain, piano in the desert, shirtless Michael in the snow with big sweeping camera movements. It's kinda ridiculous. Is there anyone else out there besides me who thought that the video for Need You Tonight was not that great? All the guys looked kinda dorky in their polished outfits and poses and stuff. I really don't see why it won all those awards, was it innovative or something? Never Tear Us Apart should have won that year. The band didn't have much input into it. They asked Michael if it was about Helena being beautiful and he said "I dunno. Is she?" Something like that. Since they didn't have much to do with it -- that's why it probably sucked. I'd have to say that one of my fave vids would have to be...(ouch!!) The Gift. I really like the way it was done, even if it was a little much. A little... in excess, you may say? That's just them. Oh, that and Strangest Party. All that black was great. You know, that's a color we never see them in much (rolling my eyes). A little news (not really, just thoughts)...I walked out of the bathroom this weekend (you needed to know that) and HBO was on the TV. All I heard was Strangest Party in the background. Turned out to be Drop Zone with Wesley Snipes, from '94. Didn't watch it, but it looked good. One other thing -- I walked into the jrs section of Hecht's Dept Store (it's where the bathroon is! Honestly!--Why does all my INX-info revolve around bathrooms?), and they were playing Taste It. I just caught it on the monitors, and it was some alternate video. The last thing you see is Tim. Duran Duran (tie) The Police/Sting 7. Nine Inch Nails (tie) Catherine Wheel 9. Radiohead (tie) New Order To show you how little things have changed over the past 2 years since our last poll, U2, REM, and DM finished 1-2-3 in the 1993 poll as well. Sting, New Order, Nine Inch Nails, and The Cure were also found on the 1993 Top 10 list. 46 people (that's right - we got over 40!) voted in this year's poll. Because I have neither the time nor inclination to write every act mentioned, following is the list of every act voted for at least twice. Questions, comments, thoughts are welcome! Till next time... /neil 21 - U2 14 - REM 11 - Depeche Mode 9 - The Cure 8 - Duran Duran, The Police/Sting 7 - Nine Inch Nails, Catherine Wheel 6 - Radiohead, New Order 5 - Blur, Live, Midnight Oil, Violent Femmes, Smashing Pumpkins, Peter Gabriel 4 - The Smiths, Talking Heads, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors, Simple Minds, Erasure 3 - Indigo Girls, Sarah McLachlin, Tori Amos, echobelly, Stone Temple Pilots, The Beatles, Rush, Pink Floyd, Alanis Morrisette, Icehouse, The Who, Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Elton John, Oasis, The Black Crowes, Genesis/Phil Collins 2 - Matthew Sweet, Soul Asylum, Melissa Etheridge, The Beloved, Suede, Soundgarden, Information Society, Extreme, The Stone Roses, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Boston, David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry, Crowded House, Elastica, The Clash, BB King, Hootie and the Blowfish, B-52's, Pet Shop Boys, PJ Harvey, Weird Al Yankovic, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Frank Sinatra, Def Leppard, Madness, Tears For Fears, Nirvana, Velvet Underground, Oingo Boingo/Boingo, The Charlatans, Fleetwood Mac, Big Audio Dynamite, and last but not least, Gene. Here's my question, I hope there is some die-hard INXS fan out there who can answer it! Are there any messages hidden on any of the INXS albums that you can hear if you play the album backwards? I'm just curious that's all. Lots of other groups seem to enjoy doing this! On suggestions for this newsgroup...I think that posts to this newsgroup would increase tenfold if some of the actual members from INXS would post here...at least every once in a while! I'd imagine that right now they have a bit of free time on their hands, so there's no excuse! =) Take for example alt.music.info-society. Whenever the real Kurt Harland (of the band "Information Society") posts there, the group becomes revitalized! He even shows up on IRC. Now, why don't any of the Farriss brothers or Michael or Garry or Kirk ever post here? Why can't we talk to our favorite band members on IRC? SOOOoooo....if any of you have even REMOTE contact with anybody in INXS, tell them to get off their asses and talk to US!!! Another thing that particularly bugs me is this. Everywhere I go I see people wearing shirts, hats, and other assorted clothing promoting bands such as Pearl Jam, Offspring, and Smashing Pumpkins. Personally, I don't give a rat's ass about any of those bands (but that's just _my_ opinion), but I want to know how come I can't ever find INXS merchandise anywhere. It seems to be that the only place one can acquire INXS-wear is at a concert. I saw some guy wearing a "Full Moon, Dirty Hearts" shirt, and I nearly killed him so I could take it :). But anyway, it was obviously a concert shirt as it listed lots of dates on the back. But since INXS never comes out here (Austin, TX)...it's quite difficult for me to get outfitted! Somebody please assure me that INXS will swing out here to Austin before I die!!! Clothing aside...this applies to other merchandise too! The only poster that I have of INXS was purchased at a music store back in 1988!!! I can't find bumper-stickers that have INXS on them (and I do collect bumper-stickers of my favorite bands!)! If ANY of you know where to find INXS merchandise like T-shirts or bumper-stickers, PLEASE post here for all to see! Well, this is probably the lengthiest post that this group has had in a while. I hope I'm not wasting bandwidth...I try not to post unless I have something really useful to say. Never fear and no worries, you are NOT the only INXS fan out here. There are thousands of us online alone. Some of us are very chatty too - we just can't get to the alt.music.inxs board until AOL gets off their duffs and adds it to our newsgroups. (whom could I be talking about???) Know too that this message is being read by some of those thousands (I don't know if you realize your message was forwarded to the inxs mailing list) and that if I make strange comments - it's because all these other people already know me and I'm probably talking to them (right ladies & gentlemen?) because, I ofcourse love to gab. I can give you what I think is the reason for the lack of merchandise - keeping in mind that this is ONLY my opinion and in no way, shape or form resembles fact - I think the lack of merch is due to the little blow with Atlantic records. Remember, they basically have everything INXS has produced. The new label has practically nothing. So - it's fight fight fight for all the rights until they can put something out for those that love them. For now, you'll just have to barter and trade like the rest of us I'm afraid. (damn, am I waxing poetic again? I hate it when I do that!) Now deary, have you all the latest info, gossip, fan club news etc? Anything of an information nature that we can supply you with? I guess it is my favorite--but subsequent material has also been very good. I really liked FMDH--especially "Viking Juice" and "I'm Only Looking." They had a refreshing raw sound that I really got into. The Ray Charles bit was so-so and I never have gotten into "The Gift" as much as I know some of you have. But that aside, I enjoyed FMDH VERY much. As much as I like _Kick_, I'd hate for them to be like so many other bands and churn out clones of former sucesses. If they did an album similar to _Kick_, however, I'm pretty confident that such a move would be based on a desire to return to a former sound because they *wanted* to, not because they *had* to in order to boost sales. INXS has *always* had a very tight funky sound--that essential element I don't think will ever escape them regardless of what path they chose to follow or revisit.
