To be complete, though, it needs YOUR help. LONDON (Reuter) - Australian rock star Michael Hutchence was fined the sterling equivalent of $621 Tuesday for assaulting a photographer outside a British hotel. Hutchence, lead singer of the group INXS, was also ordered to pay costs and compensation of almost $2,952. Looking nervous and constantly taking sips from a glass of water, he pleaded guilty to assaulting a press photographer outside a hotel where he had spent the night with girlfriend Paula Yates, who is married to rock charity fundraiser Bob Geldof. Hutchence, who left supermodel Helena Christensen for Yates, denied a second charge of using threatening and abusive behavior in March and this was dismissed by magistrates in the southern English town of Maidstone. The couple had been harassed over dinner the night before the assault by journalists at adjoining tables in the restaurant, the court heard. >From ???@??? The Australian Radio Network (ARN) announced that it had sold Gold to Murphy's company , Kick Media Pty Ltd for $5.1million. Murphy will pay ARN as much as $2 million more based on the performance over the next few years. Word is that Murphy plans to relaunch Gold as a youth station with a heavy emphasis on new Australian music. Trevor Smith has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the new station. He has said that an announcement about the stations format would be made this week. & also.... 2SM...GOLD...NOW KICK One of the worst kept secrets in the industy is that the now Chris Murphy-owned Gold radio station in Syndny is being renamed to Kick. Yesterday I was listening to the Greatest Hits album and I was noticing that some of my favorite songs were on X. It seems to be at that the band has lost some of the "spark" they had with Kick and X. I love what they did with _Heaven_Sent_ and _Communication_ (they're great to drive fast to >:) but they just don't "click" with me like _the_Stairs_, _Suicide_Blonde_, and _Devil_Inside_. Long time fans say, "Hmm, it took me a long time to get used to it but it's o.k". In retrospect, those same fans will say, "Hmm, I liked that album the best." Even the band themselves will question the diversion. However, Do we really want to have a band that puts the same stuff out over and over? Do we really want to listen to music that all sounds the same? Right now, I dare anyone to squeeze INXS into any music "category" because I don't think you can. They aren't pop, they aren't rock, they aren't alternative and they like it that way (so do I for that matter) The point is that, unlike any other band out there, these guys can do whatever they want. They can take each of their likes, tastes and affinities, cram them all together and keep the rest of us dancing our butts off. It's part of the growing process - pains and all. If you really want to point a finger at the so called 'decline' of INXS - and I'm assuming that you, like me, are a resident of the U.S. - it's because of Atlantic and probably the management. Let's face it, The U.S. is a spoiled, fickel lot. We have to have everything shoved in our faces 24 hours a day for us to care. It didn't happen for the last two albums. I don't know how many times I've heard that someone didn't even know 2 more albums had been released. I didn't and I've been around for LONG time. I don't think that happened in europe but correct me if I'm wrong - I'd love to know. What is the future of INXS? They'll go back into the studio. They'll put their hearts and souls into the album. They'll release it. The loyal fans will buy it, go to the concerts and adore them no matter what. Fair Weather fans can hop on if they like or fly off if they don't. Either way, the guys care about the music and anyone that cares for them. Remember - they "know each one of us personally". Count me in. Personally, I love the fact that they're not everyone's favorite band. I wouldn't be able to stand it if every teeny-bopper walking down the street was humming one of their songs. If you look at the some of the biggest "modern rock" bands (as that seems to be what they are catagorized chart wise and radio station wise)-New Order, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys-they hardly dent the charts here in the US. > > Yesterday I was listening to the Greatest Hits album and I was >noticing that some of my favorite songs were on X. Songs like All Around, Baby Don't Cry, Back On Line really get me up and Not Enough Time is definently my favorite song of all time and nothing has come close. FMDH seemed to have that energy too-they've still got that spark (check them out in concert-WOW!), it's just interpreted differently. Seems that they've just lost some of the poppier and sleeker sounds of Kick and X and decided to go with where they've wanted. For example, "Calling All Nations" was voted #10 on someone's list, so the song received 10 points for having been voted for and 1 point for its #10 position, for a total of 11 points. I had been DJing at my college radio station listening to artists like the Pixies, Jesus Jones and the Smithereens. INXS's pull-away from the pop-rock sound was a godsend. > However, Do we really want to have a band that puts the same stuff out over > and over? Do we really want to listen to music that all sounds the same? I never said that. I think (*at present*) most of my favorite songs come from LLT, Kick, and X. Three different albums with three different sounds (okay, the "this is what you need, what you need" (What You Need) and "this is what we do, what we do" (Wild Life) do sound rather similar). > If you really want to point a finger at the so called 'decline' of INXS - and > I'm assuming that you, like me, are a resident of the U.S. - it's because of > Atlantic and probably the management. And, I'll be honest here and say that I was one of those fans that had to get used to the new sound on FMDH. I like it much better now than when I first heard it but I still have a few criticisms. Though, the whole reason I ran out and got it was 'cause I heard some of it in concert. I like it better live. I like all their stuff better live. > I never said that. I think (*at present*) most of my favorite >songs come from LLT, Kick, and X. I agree - you never said that you want the same music over and over - who really wants that? However, the thing that's "missing" or different from LLT, Kick & X is all the slick pop sounds. That's what INXS made its name on. I can name a couple of songs that have interchangeable rifs, lead-ins etc from those three albums. If they hadn't changed up, we'd be listening to another Boston (sorry to all Boston fans). What I'm disagreeing with is the fact that something is missing at all. I don't think it's a loss of "edge" as you put it. Just a change. Better or worse is your decision. >Somehow, I feel that there will be an end to that cycle and it >won't be long from now. All things end. The guys are tired. They've done this all their life. Michael is lucky to have a voice. They all have families. There are 1001 reasons why they may never come back again. I want you to know that I wasn't trying to bash you or anything, I've thought about all this too. A greatest hits album usually means the end. FMDH ends with such finality you'd think sure they broke up the second it was finished. Every time I listen to Viking Juice my mind starts going again. I've grown up with these guys. They're about the only music I know. However, if we the fans start going "oh well, I guess that about raps it up!" - Then why should they even bother? I guess all I'm trying to say is they need us as much as we need them. We're the only ones out here right now keeping the flame alive. The radio stations won't, record stores won't, there isn't even a management team (not that there ever really was!). We're going to be the ones that keep them going. Yeah, I'd like to see them go out on top too. But think about it this way - They were on top in 88. How many time a week do you have to defend them - only 7 years later? Being on top isn't what counts - only being happy with what you do. After all, they did prove themselves to the world, not only in 88, but everytime they released a new album or went on tour! For those of us who had the luck to see them in concert, we should be eternally happy because, to me, they are the greatest live band I ever heard! Many bands go through their ups and downs but many bands don't last very long (I believe Green Day and others are just a fad. Already, they're dying out.). As soon as these bands disappear, the coast will once again be clear for such acts as INXS. If INXS is truly breaking up, well, they did last nearly two decades! It would be truly sad but look at acts like the Police. Sting managed to last and they just released a live album! I say don't get depressed too quickly. Even if their last albums weren't commercial success, we still enjoyed them, right? I say those albums were made for INXS fans only since the world just excluded them out! So cheer up, the future of INXS is still unclear, leaving place for hope!
