Phil McClean In our fight against the end Making love we are immortal "Not Enough Time" - INXS (A.Farriss/M.Hutchence) mcclean@plains.nodak.edu Vox - December 1994 XS ALL AREAS Hutchence and Pengilly on two decades of INXS hits... MICHAEL HUTCHENCE and KIRK PENGILLY, the singer and guitarist of INXS, are in town to appear on "Top Of The Pops" to promote 'The Strangest Party (These Are the Times)', which is one of the two new tracks on their latest LP "INXS: The Greatest Hits". 17 years, 11 albums, two Grammy nominations and a Brit Award have led to this greatest hits collection. And, although the bulk of the hits come from 1987's nine- million-selling "Kick" album and its three-million-selling follow up, "X", "The Greatest Hits" spans the period between 1984's 'Original Sin' to the brand new 'Deliver Me' and 'The Strangest Party (These Are the Times)'. Last seen on their World Pub Tour last year, INXS are currently preparing for their 12th album, although Hutchence is taking time off to record 'Baby Let's Play House' for an Elvis Presley tribute LP, which will include some of the biggest names in the music business. Here, Hutchence and Pengilly trawl through the past two decades for this track by track... 'MYSTIFY' MICHAEL HUTCHENCE: "We perform this so often that it's the one I most change the lyrics on. It's generally used as a kind of mirror of what's going on around us, and I write new lyrics into it every night. I don't think the audience ever really notices what I'm singing, but sometimes the band do." KIRK PENGILLY: "We just think its Michael forgetting the proper lyrics." 'SUICIDE BLONDE' MH: "Kylie dyed her hair this colour she called Suicide Blonde. Was that the brand name? No, I think she just called it that. She said: 'I'm going to go Suicide Blonde today.' I think she was thinking of people like Marilyn Monroe and I thought it was good name, especially as Madonna was big at the tie. I just thought of all these blondes and how they tended to wipe themselves out if they were successful. There's a history of it --- the public kills them or something, and so the song's about that: ''You want to make her a suicide blonde''" 'TASTE IT' KP: "We were pissed off with the video for this one, because we had lots of problems with ratings in the States, even though it was one of the best we've ever done." MH: "No one could play until after ten o'clock at night because of the voyeurism and that's really what the video was about." 'The Strangest Party (These Are The Times)' KP: "We did this over here in London a couple of months ago and it's going to be our next single. We worked with [producer] Chris Thomas whom we hadn't worked with since "X", and it was great fun." MH: "It's one of those apocalypse kind of songs. I was just thinking about how we've come to a point where there's a really fine line between carrying the burden of knowledge and finding the lightness in life." 'NEED YOU TONIGHT' MH: "The problem with going through the songs like this is that you've had so many experience with them that its difficult to pinpoint particular stories. If you want a sex'n'drugs'n'rock'n'roll anecdote...well, this song certainly helped my sex life." KP: "We'd never considered it as a single, but we decided to release it in America to give people a taste of the new album, and it went straight to Number One. We were like: "Oh, that was lucky, wasn't it?"" 'ORIGINAL SIN' MH: "Was this a Catholic concept? No, I'm an excommunicated Catholic. I was in my mother's stomach when I was freed from Catholicism, because my father punched out the local priest. That's another story, although it could be where the lyrics to this originally came from. We'd hung out with [producer] Nile Rodgers, and because of the black-and-white thing of us being Australian boys who were influenced by African- American music. I started thinking about the concept of original sin. I guess I reinvented what I thought it was, rather than what it is in the Bible. Ironically enough, recording this song was the first time that I got over the studio-as-church concept. I had always been, like: 'Oh, God, the tape's rolling and the lights's on,' but I remember doing the vocal while Nile was in the control room with about 15 of his friends, dancing around and eating ribs. They were all getting into it and creating this fantastic atmosphere and right in middle of [adopts reverential tone] the sacred vocal, he started playing with the boom button and shouting things at me. It was like having a party with your own soundtrack... and it totally changed the way we tried to operate in the studio. 'HEAVEN SENT' KP: "This started out as a simple three/four Country ballad, but it turned into this really hard rock song. Richard [Lowenstein, video director] decided that the whole concept of the song was to be 'in your face', and so he had all this shit flying at us in the video. I just remember trying to sing backing vocals and almost choking to death on all these bits of silver paper that were flying around. It was OK for the guys who didn't have to open their mouths, but I remember puking up bits of paper for days on end." 'NEVER TEAR US APART' MH: 'We had to do the video for this without Jon [Farriss, drummer] because he was in hospital having his stomach pumped. He'd been out with one of our production managers---a mad Scotsman called Ian, who's six-foot four and huge, almost like a walrus with a red handle-bar mustache. He loves vodka, and Jon had tried to outdrink him and failed. I remember going up to my hotel room and hearing this lift door going "ching-ching-ching-ching"...I looked round and there was Jon lying on the floor, while Ian lurked around, completely naked apart from his long, black trenchcoat. The lift doors were opening and shutting on Jon's head. It wasn't really surprising that he didn't make it to the video." 'THE GIFT' MH: "This is the song that Jon had originally been carting around the world as a track called 'The Racks of Love.' The two of use worked on it at my house in France. The bass sound came from a plastic, nine-volt battery Marshall amp, which cost about five dollars and I added a vocal." KP: "Typically, we tried to emulate it in the studio, but we ended up using some of that original vocal. It's one of my all-time favourite INXS songs." 'DEVIL INSIDE' MH: "When we were working on "Kick", this stood out because it had such a strong start. When we played it last year in Amsterdam's Paradiso, the power blew and all the lights went out, which was spooky because the Paradiso is an old church. Of course, it could have had something to do with our sound engineer, Benjamin, who has his own bar in the sound desk." 'BEAUTIFUL GIRL' MH: "This song took on a life of its own. Andrew [Farriss, keyboard player/guitarist] wrote it; I just sang it and as far as I can gather it's actually about his baby daughter, Grace. It's just a sentimental song, but people got hold of it and took it into this whole other weird world, as though it was my personal supermodel song. So, when we did the video, we just thought we'd go all the way with it. The director suggested that we should play with the whole concept of beauty, so we had all these models going down the catwalk, but we also had lots of ordinary people in it and focused on the beauty in them. That got interpreted in another way and it ended up being used as the theme song for some big conference on anorexia and bulimia. It was kind of like, how did it get from being a song about a little baby to being a theme for eating disorders? Of course, then I started copping shit like: 'How can you have a song like that if your girlfriend's beautiful?' [a reference to supermodel Helena Christensen] to which I answer: 'Is she? I hadn't noticed.'" 'DELIVER ME' MH: "I guess this should have a little anecdote to go with it, but it's only just been written and recorded. It's actually one of the main reasons that we worked with Chris [Thomas] again. We were going to work with another producer---who shall re main nameless---but I had a horrible suspicion that he was going to fuck with us and do something totally different. Anyway I had 'Deliver Me' on cassette and took it round to Chris's place and asked him what he'd do with it. He really like it and we brought him in again." 'NEW SENSATION' KP: "This song always reminds me of playing at Wembley Stadium in 1991 and seeing about 80,000 people leaping up and down to it. We did the video in Prague and it was bloody freezing. Richard [Lowenstein] got us to stand there while he took one frame after another, like animation. I was freezing and my arms were aching. I can remember the pain and agony of going through that video because it was so cold. Michael?" MH: "Oh, it's just an average pop song." 'WHAT YOU NEED' KP: "The last song we did on "Listen Like Thieves." We'd touched on that sort of funk-rock thing before, but this song really shone through, and it ended up being the first Top Five single we had in America." MH: "Yeah, I was doing "Dogs In Space" [Melbourne punk movie] and I was in total Sammy No Brain mode [the smacked-out singer that Hutchence played] sitting in this flea-infested house where we were filming, which I ended up living in. I got this fax saying "You're Number Five in America with 'What You Need'", and I was so into character that I just couldn't relate to it. It was like, 'Huh? [pushes his hair out of his face Sammy No-Brain-style] What band is that? INXSWho?' It was funny because I just couldn't react." 'LISTEN LIKE THIEVES' MH: "The video for this was shot by Polly Borland, one of the three infamous Melbourne sisters, who's now doing really well as a photographer. We just filled up a cardboard box of 35mm film and shot it straight off. We took the box of film down the chemist and said: 'We want this back by Monday.' It love that video; it's my favourite." 'BITTER TEARS' MH: "Didn't Jon and I write that one? No? I'm sorry, I'm just a jaded rock star. KP: "We did a video for this at a place called Hervey Bay, where there was this bizarre resort with all these funny little mopeds and golf carts. The night before we did the video, we were all were goofing nuts, driving round this resort on mopeds, pissed out of our brains on tequila. I flaked out around one and I remember lying in bed and hearing this screech of brakes and a loud crash, followed by fits of laughter, as two bikes crashed into one another." MH: "Yeah, I crashed one into a room." KP: "See that there [points to a black mark on his hand] that was from my bike crash. There's a little stone or something still in there. I don't remember too much about the actual song, though." 'BABY DON'T CRY' KP: "This was the big extravaganza and it was actually quite a technological feat, because we recorded a 40-piece orchestra and the whole band live in the studio. We had amplifiers in the toilets and Jon was in the lobby just to everyone playing at the same time. It was such a vibe. One of the orchestra leaders came up to Jon and said: 'How come every time we do a take it sounds different?' They didn't realise we were playing live---they were used to going in and adding to an existing track." MH: "We were trying to make the song real big and noisy, like an old Beatles session. The video was memorable---I was standing next to a wild animal. They pulled this cage up and this huge black panther stood there panting while I was standing at the top of these steps like meat on the end of a hook---the Stairway to Dinner. The director goes: 'Right, everybody behind the fence,' and I was like: 'What about me?' They'd go: 'Don't move! Don't move!' and I'm like: 'Yeah, thanks'. This beautiful animal, so powerful and silent, came flying by me while some guy kept dropping chunks of meat to keep it amused. I kept thinking: Please keep feeding that fuckin' thing. I guess it was an experience." It was originally published last month in the Daily News... Australian mega-band INXS is back in the spotlight thanks to its new greatest hits album -- but don't expect that situation to last for long. According to frontman Michael Hutchence, the band will likely "back off for a while" once it's finished promoing the new disc. Then the members will quietly settle in to work on INXS' first album under its new deal with Mercury/Polygram. "We probably won't get a new record out until mid-95," he says. And when they do get back to work, "I'd like to throw caution to the wind and make us almost unrecognizable." Hutchence say. "We're starting a new chapter... I'd love to try different potentials in the band." Meanwhile, sometimes-actor Hutchence is in the market for a film role to fill his time. "I just narrowly missed out on being one of the leads in 'Priscilla" Queen of the Desert' and it really annoyed me," he says. He adds, "It's hard to schedule movies in between doing records and touring. I don't think rock 'n' roll and film make very good bed partners." There you have it. I found this article over my break. Quite tongue in cheek. It's an interview with Hutchence. Q - How the devil are you? Great. And it's interesting that you used the word "devil" there because "Devil Inside" is a song on our new Greatest Hits album which should be in your record stores shortly. No, I had a pretty good summer, but it was interrupted by a tour. Inconsiderate, I call it. Q - What have you been up to besides dicking around in the South of France? We have people down to the house. The family came down. Saw my dad, which was really good because he hadn't had a month-long holiday in a long time. Acutually, we went in for a spot of father/son bonding, which was very emotional. It was very necessary and without being too cosmic I feel I'm much more of a whole person now. We get along really well like buddies. We've just never spent that much time together. Then he drove, against all advice, to Paris and we had a week there. We went to a few parties and nightclubs and he was like, French women have a lot of style, don't they? Q - How's the missus? Oh, she's ripping it up. Q - Why do you still bother doing all this band stuff when you could just nonce around? That's a bloody good question and I don't know why I bother. I'm going to quit today. Q - What do you think of when you think of Q? Information. I love it, you know. I've just recently become a voracious record-buyer, so when Q comes out every month, I just literally go through the reviews ticking what I want. Then I send a young nubile to pick it all up. A virgin to Virgin. Q - What do you think would surprise people most about you? Vegetarian? Homosexual? Teetotal! I don't know. How fabulous I really am. That I'm not the shallow rock star people assume I am. I'm a deep, caring, sensitive individual. Q - When were you last truly gob-smacked? Um. Oh no, can't tell that one. Actually, I saw something the other night that amazed me. It was at a magic show and I'd never think of going to a magic show normally but we went to see David Copperfield's extravaganza and he was talking to this woman and she was talking he took her head off and put it on a table and it continued talking and looking at him. I was maybe 40 feet away and I just couldn't believe it. I asked him afterwards how he did it and he just stared straight through me. Q - Do you regret telling Q, "I'm a fucking great rock star"? No. Do you think anyone who said something like that would ever regret it? I say lots of things that I shouldn't have said. In fact, very often I don't even know I've said them. I just get informed and then get embarrassed. Q - Name a man you fancy. Let's see now. Richard Burton. He was a pretty good bloke. Pretty fanciable. My kinda guy. Q - What's the most outrageous press you've read about yourself? The first NME review of us at The Marquee. It was horrible, low and despicable and ... probably right. I guess I had a little too much attitude for a little guy from Australia. Oh, and a quote in a paper from Kirk [Pengilly, INXS colleague] saying that he had a really good time at my wedding when I hadn't even got married. Isn't that the height of bullshit? A fake quote from a fake wedding. Q - When was the last time you were blind drunk? Monaco. The World Music Awards, I think it was. Q - Did you let yourself down in any way? No comment. Yes. Apparently. I mentioned it once but I think I got away from it. Q - Have you ever worried that you might be developing a drinking problem? I enjoy drinking as much as I enjoy not drinking. Q - What's the best new record you've heard? I really liked the Oasis album. It's like an old-style album where you have a collection of singles, pop songs, as opposed to album tracks. There's no pretension to anything other than good songs. And they have good attitude, or rather bad attitude which is good attitude. Q - What's the worst lyric you've written? There's countless. The whole first album. Take your pick. I thought they were pretty good at the time but when you look back, you realize that there's an awful lot of self-deceit going on. I was trying to be too interesting. Too oblique. I was equating obscurity with talent. Q - What's the king of the vegetable kingdom? The banana! Q - That's not, technically speaking, a vegetable. Oh fuck, no, it's a fruit isn't it? The potato then. That's the boring answer. But in terms of top of the range tosser veg, art legumes, it would have to be wild mushrooms. Porcine risotto. Lashings of it please. I thank you. Q - Could INXS handle themselves in a fight? I think so, yes. We're quite handy. Q - Could you have UB40? (Laughs) From what I've heard, probably not. I could probably take on one or two of them. Q - Guns N'Roses? For sure. Fucking pushover. Q - How has your life changed in the last eight years? I've gone through personal changes in relationships and I've had revelations. Hopefully, I've wised up to certain things. And agreed to differ on others. Q - Are you more evolved? Yeah. God, I hope so. Know thyself. That's the hard thing and getting a perspective on yourself can be very hard but I'm getting there. Sometimes it's really not nice and sometimes it's just so different to what you thought it was. But it takes a long time. That's the Lifetime Achievement Award. Q - Are you a vain person? I'm more of a blue vein person (laughs). I'm sorry. Welcome to Australia. To be honest, and this sounds stupid, but I don't that much of my looks and vanity is thinking you look fabulous, isn't it? Q - Have you ever kissed a sheep? Sure. It's the only reason you fuck them on their backs! Q - Would you snog Morrissey for a pound? Of course I would. Like a shot. I'd do it for 50p! Helena would be proud of me. She's mad for Morrissey. Q - A joke. What's brown and sticky? Brown and sticky, I dunno. Q - A stick! (Laughter) That's brilliant. A stick! Fuck that's a good joke. Really Australian. Q - Tell us a joke. How do we know Jesus was a Jew? Because he lived at home until he was 32, he thought his mother was a virgin, his mother thought he was a god and he started a family business that has been successful for 2,000 years. Boom fucking boom. She has just about every single article on INXS ever written and she has every single recording they had put out in any country.(no kidding!!) She has met the band on numerous occasions over the years and they have become familar with her appearances backstage. She has just now within the past two years been able to convince the management to consider her to reinvent the inxs fan club with the help of inxs fans all over the country. There is still no definite news about this new inxs club coming into existence but she will keep me posted and I'll relay any info I can get. Jon Farriss did call her up one night and left a message on her machine saying how he and the band were very impressed with her ideas and work and that they would support her any way they can. I have the item: it's INXS opening show for the Get Out of the House Tour from Santa Monica, CA in 93. It's a bootleg, which is why I haven't included it on the discography, because INXS never released it, per se. As for getting it, I would definitely recommend this one because it has by far the most superior sound quality of any CD INXS Boot that I have come across (believe me folks, that's alot of them...). It is made by KTS from Italy (some of you may have heard of them before). They are known for putting out the best bootleg CD in terms of quality. neil Neil Kothari INXS The Beloved Blur NIN Echobelly Ministry Suede MaxQ Apt #3I Woodbridge ThePolice Tori Amos Catherine Wheel Tears For Fears REM 431 Riverside Drive DJ, WKCR-FM NY 89.9, Thurs 1-5am Phone: 212 853 2389 New York, NY 10025 nak6@columbia.edu or http://www.columbia.edu/~nak6/ ----- End Included Message ----- ----- Begin Included Message ----- >From nak6@columbia.edu Mon Jan 23 07:40:57 1995 Date: Sun, 22 Jan 1995 13:38:01 -0500 (EST) From: Neil Kothari X-Sender: nak6@ciao.cc.columbia.edu To: terry kroetsch f Cc: INXS Mailing List Subject: Re: INXS/Wire Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Content-Length: 848 > I am a big Wire fan (am I the only one?) and was amzed to read that our > boys have done a cover (Strange?). To my knowledge, INXS has done the following covers: Jackson (nancy sinatra) The Loved One - twice (some aussie group that escapes my memory) Good Times (also some aussie group) Born to Be Wild (steppenwolf) It's Not Unusual (tom jones I think... from live baby live) Neil Kothari INXS The Beloved Blur NIN Echobelly Ministry Suede MaxQ Apt #3I Woodbridge ThePolice Tori Amos Catherine Wheel Tears For Fears REM 431 Riverside Drive DJ, WKCR-FM NY 89.9, Thurs 1-5am Phone: 212 853 2389 New York, NY 10025 nak6@columbia.edu or http://www.columbia.edu/~nak6/ ----- End Included Message ----- ----- Begin Included Message ----- >From jrawding@is.dal.ca Sun Jan 29 09:19:56 1995 Date: Sat, 28 Jan 1995 15:07:34 -0400 (AST) From: The Jaybird! Subject: Full Moon, Dirty Hearts To: INXS-list@iastate.edu Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Content-Length: 3005 I live in Canada and our nation's music station, MUCH MUSIC aired the 12 videos from the album too. Here's what I thought: Freedom Deep: A simple video, comprised mostly of two slow zooms towards the keyhole of a large door behind which Michael is waiting. The Gift: Still a great video, what really makes me smile is Michael's innocent humming and the refrigerator door exploding to initiate the tempest of confusing images and shots. I'm Only Looking: A lot of interesting camera work done in this one, what makes this video special is the camera's return to a large painting at the end of the video. Full Moon, Dirty Hearts: Not quite an effective beginning to this one, the two main characters fool around on the beach. The video most certainly picks up though and by the end of it I was sighing with the rest of 'em. Love -> Heartbreak style. The Messenger: A VERY odd video, but humorous all the same. INXS seemed to be having a lot of fun in this one, and I guess that's the main thing. I just hope this kind of video doesn't become a habit for 'em. Please...(You Got That): This was where I squirmed. If there's a stinker on this compilation, this is it. Some Fabio Robles guy (that's what it says in the credits) dances around and I won't even discuss the dinos. Time: Pretty routine, your typical live band video. I liked the rapid I-N-X-S that quickly spurted across the screen. The enthusiasm is most definitely there on stage too. Cut Your Roses Down: My personal favourite on the compilation, this black and white video has all 6 of the guys running into weird situations in a diner of sorts. The song itself was extended to guarantee equal screentime. Make Your Peace: Neat and exciting, this was edited with great care with sometimes 2 shots happening per second. A young couple are wake up in a speeding car and embark on quite an adventure in the proces. Days of Rust: Stylish and eccentric, this video seems like someone is purging their emotions with dark and brooding shots. A simple setting of a child's bedroom seems apt to the song. The Messenger: An alluring, eye-catching video about the world of cross- dressing, the model's confidence about him/herself becomes contagious as we are drawn into the make-over which the video showcases splendidly. Kill the Pain: Somewhat disappointing, this black and white video showcases Jon for a change, and while he does a great job, the whole budgie symbolism is too silly to take seriously. Good direction though. Jaybird !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
